You're framing this as 'why is everyone going with a Layens hive'? Everyone is absolutely not going with a Layen's hive. A tiny, tiny percentage of people are not going to use a conventional Langstroth this year. The infulencer space is made up of people that do things unconventionally because it draws views. Some really basic disadvantages of a Layens are loosing the ability to quickly purchase equipment from regional suppliers and a loss of support from groups like local associations.

David love that you are trying a laynes hive. My husband and do laynes hives for last several years and love them. One suggestion is to not fully expand the hive all at once. It will slow the growth of the hive. Start a package on 4 frames with a follower board. Expand when they start drawing on the last frame. Just a suggestion. Enjoy it we love them. ❤️

Thanks. Yes, in this video I explained how I was going to start them on one side on 5 frames with a follower board and I also mentioned that the frame with the X on it was the follower board after I installed it explaining how I had install the bees only on 5 frames for a while. I recently performed my first inspection of the Layens Hive (video is on my channel) the bee colony survived the winter without any problems.

Layens hives aren’t heavy unless made that way. I can move my insulated 20 frame hive without trouble. I have 20 of them I sit on 19” stands. I would point people to Dr Leo’s hive desires which are very movable. By the way, anyone watching this video is not seeing a normal Layens hive. Even the frames that are shown are simply using Langstroth plastic foundation turned sideways. Normal frames are wired and have wax sheets of foundation. Layens hive are fantastic especially for us beekeepers that are done with lifting boxes. Lots of information online…check it out.

Hi David, Did you level the hive? Layens hives need to be level. Most use wax foundation in those. They grow quick. Be prepared to get another one.

David how would you liquid feed those bees there’s no space on top and I imagine it doesn’t take honey supers nor will it take you when it became Charlie PA

They make hanging / frame feeders for layens hives. I personally set my feeder on the opposite side of the follower board and leave a gap at the bottom of the follower board for them to go back and forth.

Hi David. How do you feed syrup in one of those hives? I'm assuming you'll need to give them a boost to help them start drawing comb, but I couldn't see how you'd do it.

It is a bit tricky but there is an extractor that will work. Not sure I want to shell out the money.

Maybe should've kept it on the pallet and screwed the legs down to prevent tipping when the lid is open on windy days.

Bees don’t care about the orientation of the hexagon in frames. There is a good scientific article on this in the recent American Bee Journal.

David THANKS for the Great Video. It's the first time I've ever seen a layen hive. Can't wait to hear how it's doing in July - August and the mite level if any. First warm and sunny day in Orangeville - 72 degrees and the bees are bringing in pollen by saddle bags load on their legs, body, etc.

Hi I’ve been watching your videos after work for weeks now and I’ve learned sooo much, I’ve gone from knowing nothing to feeling confident to start out with my own crew of bees lol😅 , thank you My only question is would it be best to get a local swarm or one from more north of me were they get colder weather

I watch a doctor Leo in Missouri, who has a book out called keeping bee's with a smile, for a while, at the same time I found you. I liked what he had to say about them. I was drawn because of the horizontal, how thick it's walls are, and how deep the frames are for the queen to lay a more rounded lay pattern, and possable over wintering better, i hope. I hope this answers you questions sir.

Enjoy your videos. I live middle Louisiana, use 19 frame Layens, 3/4" plywood no insulation other than 1 1/2" foam in the top, I'm 70 pick them up and carry them where I need to, no losses last winter (have a golf cart, no 5 mile hikes). They work great for us in the South. Layens have advantages.

I got mine and put a Pennsylvania overwintered nuc in it for a day and let the bees exit and enter the hive for 24 hours so they would get used to the hive. The next day my husband and I sawed off about 3.5 inches of the langstroth frame. We fit that altered piece length wise in the Layens frame and screwed it in from the top. I only fed them the first week. We've been keeping an eye on their progress and they're building out the old frames refit and some new frames I add wax to. They're looking really healthy so far.

We sell packages and we always have a few extras in case of a math mistake, so I figured this would be the easiest way to get bees into the layens hive.

Love the end sequence with the bees flying in the open and then settling in at the entrance of the new hive. Same with your pollen feeding video clips from the live streams. You could make a longer video of un-narrated views of bees flying and feeding with that simple guitar music, and i'd watch it and play it in the background any day! What's the guitar piece?
