Here are some memories from a wonderful week of Beethoven chamber music at the Whittington International Chamber Music Festival in Shropshire in May 2017. The renowned musicians and good friends included the Elias Quartet (who I studied with ages ago in Manchester), Chris Richards and Joost Bosdijk (both principal players in the LSO), Katy Woolley (former principal horn of the Philharmonia), Bogdan Bozovic (violinist in the Vienna piano trio), Nathaniel Boyd and Rosie Ventris (cellist and violist in the Albion string quartet), Ben Griffiths (wonderful bass player), Jan Rautio (wonderful pianist), Anna-Liisa Bezrodny (solo violinist), Angela Barnes (horn player in the LSO).
The fifth year of the festival, 2017 has been the best yet with audience numbers pushing 300 for every concert and the festival really becoming a focal point for a strengthening community. The quality of the music making was truly international, and it was such a pleasure to play with such honest, genuine and wonderful musicians. As you can see from the film, it was a memorable and rewarding week for the musicians as well as festival-goers. As a festival, we've managed to learn from our mistakes and build on what works to achieve a fairly linear upward trend of progress, which we are very proud about.
