Beethoven wrote this symphony in seven years, from 1802 to 1808 and it was performed in the Theater an der Wien in 1808 in a four-hour concert. Originally titled "Recollections of Country Life," it consists of five movements detailing various events:
1. Awakening of cheerful feelings upon arrival in the country (Allegro ma non troppo)
2. Scene by the brook (Andante molto mosso)
3. Merry Gathering of Country Folk (Allegro)
4. Thunder Storm (Allegro)
5. Shepherds' Song. Happy and Thankful Feelings after the Storm (Allegretto)
The 4th movement is in F minor and 4/4. It depicts a thunderstorm, starting with a few drops of rain.
The 5th movement is in F major and 6/8 time. It depicts the sublime feeling of thanksgiving after rain. It is in sonata rondo form, which is a traditional way to end a symphony, though this symphony is not traditional in its programmatic content.
The 3rd, 4th and 5th movements are not played with a pause in between.
