If anyone has seriously studied music from any style, culture, or time, you know this process of borrowing is called "music making" or "making music." John Williams is one of the greatest. Hats off, John, and thanks for all the memories!

Where do you draw the line when it comes to it being a rip off or temp music?

@@WL1264 Great question! Me personally, I am largely opposed to how we copyright music currently in the US or at least enforce the laws. I generally think, if you can learn it and perform it, it's becomes yours.

It's a well known fact he borrowed and changed similar motifs and phrases from classical and made them his own. He is just taking samples from the classical world and putting them in his own works and he's brilliant for that.

The song is perfect. Eric Carmen had the inspiration and the abilities to make a song to remember and sing many years later. Also, he made Rachmaninof known to a wider range of listeners. He was, therefore, a genious mucisian, not to mention a handsome man!❤😊

The video maker (and everyone else) missed another one by Eric Carmen. Check out the bridge (middle eight) to Eric's song "My Girl"....also precisely borrowed from the 1st Movement of Rachmaninoff's 2nd Piano Concerto (but sing this song was not a big hit record...a lot of folks overlook this one).

I think you can find closer similarities to the Star Wars main theme music in Holst's The Planets than the first movie you used.

There’s also about a ten second sequence at the beginning of the 4th movement from Beethoven’s 5th Symphony that sounds like it could taken right out of ET. Go and listen, it’s less than a minute in. You’ll hear it immediately.

I think 3:46 sums up composing perfectly. I remember seeing a quote somewhere that good composers write music, while geniuses steal it. Using themes from other pieces of music as a way to build new material is (in my opinion) the ultimate compliment to a composer, and it's been done time and time again by composers throughout the centuries. It just goes to show that you don't need to always come up with completely original material, sometimes reworking a passage from another piece can be just as effective!

0:12 not even the same melody 0:37 not the same melody 1:00 the chord progression is what makes this theme so magical. Those chords are not the same in Tchaikovsky's piece. 1:26 he definitely stole that one 2:44 i'm sure that's a tribute, either way it's not the same melody 3:10 i'm sure that was meant as a tribute as well
