This living room suffered from the "doctors waiting room" effect. That is where all of the furniture is pressed up against the walls. In this interior redesign makeover Kim Smart of Smart Interiors uses the homeowners existing furnishings and accessories and gives the homeowners a fresh new look without spending a dime!

I would never have thought it could look so much better nor would I ever had thought of angling the furniture. So interesting.

Some of it I love, some of it I would change, but all in all it does give you a fresh new idea to work with. The ottoman as a coffee table matches the couches perfectly.

I have learn’t over many years, I no longer accomodate for just incase visitors, I have my home the way I want it without having extra chairs extra, cluttering up my home. In saying that, I love that you only use what is available in the home! Not everyone can go out and buy new . Looks better than what it was 🙂

what a great idea to go in someone's house and rearrange furniture and decorations. what a fresh perspective. even if the owners don't like everything she did, they get new ideas and are forced out of their box.
@juliecopelandbarrows2971
@juliecopelandbarrows2971 5 лет назад
Yeah the result is much more inviting. Very clever and nothing had to be purchased. They cd always go out an get a new sofa n loveseat. Don't like the design of the big leather pieces. The art on the wall does add visual interest. I wish I had a bigger living room so I could move stuff around.

@@juliecopelandbarrows2971 thats so funny. I would give anything to affors a leather sofa. I had to settle for a microfibercone that had the look. Never understood why certain people dislike leather so much.

I just want someone do this for me. But I don't have any furniture like that. Climate here being humid and dusty, cushion, leather, foam furniture and floor mats are all utter nonsense for my place. Yet in my place , with just a couple of wooden furniture and almost empty space, room looks crap . Yeah need that adrenaline to remake the space look better. This is the case with many who realised it more sensible to avoid furniture and keep spacious house intact. .

I had 6 kiddos. I have a trick to add to the beautiful design shown here . I would pull one couch out a bit more from the corner and store the baby's toys on a few shelves behind the couch in a small corner. Or no shelves just boxes. Sometimes my kids enjoyed playing back in that as their own cozy corner.When they played with a couple things on the ottoman it wss great. If we needed to clean up fast it was fun and fast.

Putting the dark colored Sofa against those curtains create a darker atmosphere. The sofas could be positioned in place of the (lighter) chairs and the chairs against the windows. Otherwise with the addition of accessories and wall art, the room does appear cosier.

I would have put a small table between the two chairs. I would have moved and repositioned the chairs away from the sofa and ottoman. I do like the open space you encounter when entering the room. If you could spend a little money, I'd get some striking curtains and rods, to make it pop. It's very traditional furniture, and a lot of brown. The Persian is great. Nice touch of color with the flowers, draws in your eye.

The room was bland before, but now it's over-decorated and not at all toddler-friendly. Angled furniture is fine -- if space allows -- which doesn't seem to be the case here. Creating all that seating in this room makes for a cluttered, claustrophobic, feel which will be hard to clean. I wonder how long the homeowners kept it this way?

Beryl your absolutely correct, it is unpleasing, there might be instances where is angled pieces work, but this is not one of those times, and every piece angeled? In a long rectangle room aswell (might have worked in a almost square room) But not in this instance- I mean look at the weird angle you must obeserve when entering the room from inside the house appose to coming through the front door? And chairs with low backs, might be pushed together, but with wingbacks it is a terrible idea!!!! Bad design layout, and impractcal to clean corners behind couches, having to move it everytime as you can't move around them! And I'm a qualified and practicing interior designer not trying to be random critic.

I like the furniture change, but the couple's toddler still lives here. Now that her toys have been banished, she'll just entertain herself by smashing the crystal and glass. Or, the designer could have listened to the couple's needs and also worked a play area into some of the open space while using accessories that would be less dangerous and easily damaged.
@jannibal9273
@jannibal9273 5 лет назад
When rooms are set up like this for "show" purposes you don't leave baby stuff hanging around. If anyone cares to notice by watching the pertinent parts again, there is more than enough open space away from the furniture to set up baby's swing and playpen that doesn't interfere whatsoever with the seating area. Isn't that the point?

Hard to believe those people had all those different items around their house--and that they don't leave empty holes where they used to be! Lamps, for example--we have no "extra" lamps anywhere; moving one would have to involve a trade, not just taking it away from where it's being used now. But apparently this is a BIG house with many rooms and lots of stuff. Looked great when done, and still left lots of floor space for baby. Don't know how they open and shut their curtains w/o climbing over things, but didn't know how they managed before, either. Maybe they don't; or have those pushbutton rods.
