Many don’t know that String was one of Bill Monroe’s Bluegrass Boys. He was replaced by Earl Scruggs. Legend has it that when Monroe asked String what he thought about Bill’s new banjo player, String replied, “He’s not very funny.” (Almost all bands of that era had one sideman who also did comedy and such was String’s role.)
Why does a murderer of 2 ever get out of jail and enjoy our freedoms? I loved watching him on he haw. I heard that grandpa Jones wrote a song about string bean called falling leaves. It is a beautiful song. A great tribute to him great American
Grandpa Jones and Stringbean were best friends; they lived across the ‘holler’ from one another. I’ve heard Grandpa Jones really had a hard time dealing with this tragedy. My heart breaks each time I think of those two sitting on their porches making their banjoes ring for one another.
Loved this show!! HeeHaw was the best. String bean was so talented and it's so heartbreaking he was taken from us in such a horrific fashion. May his wife and him continue to rest peacefully and eternally. Thank you 😊 🕊️🙏❤️
@@FactsVerse , I can't choose. The whole show was a hoot!! I especially liked when String bean, Buck Owens , Roy Clark and Grandpa would jam together 😊
I met him in Beaumont, Texas in 1973 when I was 9 years old..A random meeting inside a child’s clothing store with my mother..Completely random encounter.. It was just months before his murder.. I was a shocked child when I found out what happened..His death really hit home.. 😢
String was targeted because it was well-known that he didn’t trust banks. (Which was a bit of a myth because although String did keep a lot of cash on hand it was shown after his death that he had hundreds of thousands of dollars on deposit, spread across several local banks.) He realized that there was something wrong when he arrived home and entered his house with his gun drawn. He died in an up close shootout with the robbers. When he entered his house String was “firing rapidly.” One of the Browns said that it was a miracle they didn’t get hit. The Browns left empty-handed. They overlooked a large amount of money sewn in his overalls. Further decades later when the house was torn down tens of thousands of moldy dollars was found behind the bricks around the fireplace. The Davidson County District Attorney who sent the Browns to death row was Tom Shriver, who as a then Criminal Court Judge taught me criminal law and procedure in law school. He occasionally talked about this his most famous case. When the death penalty as it then existed was declared unconstitutional for a time by the US Supreme Court in the 1970s the Browns sentences were commuted to life in prison. I always took some comfort in knowing that rather than begging for his life String died on his feet and fighting back.
I was just about 6 or 7 years old but I do remember my parents watching Hee Haw and seeing Stringbean as well as the others. I remember he made us laugh and he’d break up the conversation the others were having as the scarecrow with a funny comment.
Thank you so much for sharing your life story. We're glad to know that you parents are a fan of the show! What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
@@FactsVerse Thank you. I really like your channel a lot! I like everything from older Hollywood film stars to television shows from 50’s 60’s and 70’s to the current day. Some of my favorite actors and actresses are, in no particular order, Jimmy Stewart, Gary Cooper, Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, Bette Davis, Marilyn Monroe, Dorthy Dandridge, Kurt Russell, Denzel Washington, Samuel L Jackson, Anthony Hopkins, Tom Cruise, Clint Eastwood and Al Pacino. Too many to mention. I’ve watched academy award theatre which was on WTBS, back in the 70’s and all of the old syndicated tv shows and reruns too.
Both Hee Haw and Lawrence Welk were canceled by cbs and abc around the same time. They would both thrive in syndication, in my area right up against each other on Saturdays at 7 pm.
My Dad and I did our chores before Hee Haw came on TV, we both loved the music. Loved Grandpa and Stringbean and a lot of the great entertainers on that show! We tried to never miss it if we could. I now make banjos and love stringed musical instruments, especially vintage ones that I get to repair!
I liked the ones whereString and Grandpa played duets and the one where all the banjo players played together! Roni Stoneman, Roy, String, Grandpa, String, etc.
I went to August at Elkins West Virginia and took banjo making classes From Bob Flesher who just passed a couple months ago, a very accomplished Banjo maker and Clawhammer player, I also took pearl inlay classes from Kevin Enoch there at Elkins who is also a great banjo maker and inlay artist. Love that Banjo music!
I'm Black and thought he was a great performer, had just moved to Madison Wisconsin when he was killed,a friend, who is Black, saw him in concert and had a talk with him,had a picture of him and my friend taken together in 1968. His talent has been missed
We're very happy to know that you had a chance to meet Stringbean. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and life story. What other types of video would you like to see?
It was rumored that he had wads of money in his overall bib. He kept money buried in the yead and imbedded in the walls of his cabin. I am a big fan of Stringbean. There is none like him.
Im a big fan of StringBean and Hee Haw. It speaks volumes of how screwed up our criminal justice system is that a maggot convicted of double murder can be out free and working for a church of all places, while his two innocent victims lost their lives for nothing but someone else's cowardice. I visit Stringbean and Estelle's grave whenever I get to Nashville and since I read that he always loved peppermint sticks, I always leave a peppermint stick there for him. May he rest in peace.
Yes, I was a big fan of stringbean. I was growing up during his time era and my parents watched "Hee Haw" everytime it was on television. What a needless and horrible death for he and his wife. 🙏RIP STRINGBEAN & WIFE 🙏
Stringbean was great. The motive was money. The brothers knew it was rumored that Stringbean carried and had alot of money hidden at his home. They never found it, but the people who later bought the home did. It was ruined from the fireplace or something? Stringbean had it somehow hidden in the bricks and the new owners saw flakes of paper that turned out to be money. Also, i'm not trying to bash the owner of this video but he said Hee Haw ran several seasons after Stringbean was murdered? Hee Haw ran for 25 years and had only premiered in 1969 if my memory is correct. We watched it for years and years. Not saying it was better or anything, just that it continued on for ages and had I think 25 seasons before going off the air. Grandpa Jones did find both Stringbean, but he found the wife first. This was all reported on in the news decades ago. Truly I like this guys videos, and not trying to be a know it all. I just hate when I watch something and there are bits and pieces left out. I remember well when this happened and it was a sad time for country music. I loved the Hee Haw skit where Stringbean would sit down with everybody and say he got a letter from home. Then he'd say it's right next to my heart and he'd start digging around his coveralls looking for it. He was awesome. This was such a senseless thing to happen. But everyone knew Stringbean didn't trust banks. He'd always kept his money at home. Bad thing was, alot of people knew this. I did see something about the one killer getting out or was trying to get out of prison. He should have been left in there to rot!
I think his only peer in frailing a banjo had to be his friend, Grandpa jones. Loss of life, loss of skill, and talent, never to be passed on. Very sad.
String bean was so awesome 👏 I felt so terrible when he was murdered and I didn’t realize his wife was killed also 😭 loved this man and I missed him so much !!!!!
Stringbean was my big sisters name growing up. My sisters name was Billie Jean and when I was a tiny boy I would call her Bean. She was really skinny and my dad thought it was funny I couldn't pronounce it so my dad knicknamed her stringbean. lol
Loved seeing String on HeeHaw on Saturday nights. He was a great entertainer and has been greatly missed. He was an original. He didn't try to be like nobody but himself
I always loved Stringbean - String, have you heard from home lately? Yep, I got a letter from Home today. I got it right here next to my heart. Heart, heart, heart heart, HIP! It was always in is back hip pocket! A true entertainer. My heart broke for Grandpa Jones who found him in that state a day later.
LOL, speaking for little boys who had nothing else to watch on Sunday night at 7 pm, We really didn't care about the musicians. that was eye candy hour.

It makes me sick to know murderers are released from prison before serving all of their sentence. Murdering this man and his wife was done in cold blood and neither of those evil men who did it ever took responsibility for it.
I do remember watching you when I was a little girl. I was wondering why I didn't see him on there anymore. I was too little to understand what happened to him. That was a horrible way to die. I hope those 2 that killed them will sit in jail for the rest of their lives. God-bless his family and my deepest Symphony to the family. Now He is with his wife and holding each other. With all my blessings and love. He was a very Special person with great talents talents from his dad. And hes with his dad playing the banjo together in heaven. God-bless his family. From Dawn Paul Melnik 🙋♀️💞✝️.
Hi Dawn! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. We're happy to know that you've watched Stringbean and the show. Ifw e may ask, which episode is the most memorable for you?
He was targeted because it was known he kept his cash at home and the murderers thought they would hit it big. It doesn’t matter who pulled the trigger. All 3 should have been liable for their deaths as all 3 were involved. Such a tragic loss. I grew up with Hee Haw and still watch the reruns.😢
I watched Hee Haw and the Grand Ole Opry growing up. I seen Greenbean on Hee Haw... I didn't know about the murder of Stringbean and his wife. I always wondered what happened to Stringbean...he was on the show and then disappeared ... after my Mother had bought all episodes of Hee Haw and we were watching Stringbean performance did I look him up ... a couple months ago. Did I learn of his murder and his wife. I noticed Grandpa Jones seemed a bit irritated on the show... about something 🤔 and I wonder still why? 🤔 I listened to the trials of the ones who murdered Stringbean and his wife. Something doesn't set right with me...there is two places they mention where Stringbean's body was found. By the fireplace and at the entrance of his house.. seen the house inside video. The door was not in sight of the fireplace? And the video showed where the floor was cut to show for evidence or to hide the gun shot by the fireplace in my opinion. ..to take the bullets out as not to be identified from which gun from which it was fired. Otherwise I'm not satisfied with how thorough the case was investigated. And not happy ..a cold blood killer was released when all other get death row... the guy should have died along with his cousin ... in prison. I personally think someone not mentioned was involved... it just doesn't make sense or match up. ... I am a fan of Stringbean and Grandpa Jones.. the whole cast on Hee Haw. Not satisfied with the case. Definitely not satisfied with the release of a cold blood killer.
David Sincere on another video of him I think he was a pitcher will you stop whining??????..you’re not a 4 year old boy you’re a grown man act like one that’s an order
