John Bloom and Tyler Ferber produced this awesome before locker and after Locker testing of a 2013 Outback with CVT automatic and traction control and a 2014 Crosstrek 5-speed with traction control. Check it out!
Real world testing. Each vehicle had 200-plus miles put on them by myself during testing before going back to customers.

This is such an awesome video to show the differences between non-locked differential and then locked differential on the same trail. Makes me consider a locker way more now, the locker made light work of that incline.

Im going to order one of these in the spring for my 03 Subaru forester. Theres a huge market for this here in beautiful flagstaff az, look forward to taking BLU all the way from AZ---> MT this next year with a locker. I don't have a youtube but I do plenty of off-roading and networking with the community and cant wait to help you sell heaps of these, if its as good as what I see the car with your brand sticker would sell itself. Thank you for finally doing what needed to be done and giving the newish Subaru community an option.

Subaru’s legendary AWD systems’ reputation was built off of cars that had an LSD. Now that they don’t have them, they’re just like any other AWD system out there. Fine for the street, mediocre off road. I’m glad someone is addressing this problem. Looks like this locker will be a very low maintenance item compared to the clutch type LSDs. Also better performance than torsen type LSDs.

Negative, probably 90% of subarus ever sold came without LSD in the rear. non-STI AWD transmission cars did and do have an LSD in the center.

Most awd systems from other manufacturer are only partial awd. Meaning that they run 2wd until wheel slip occurs. Then the awd kicks in. Other manufacturers also have a power bias meaning that most of the power gets sent to the front wheels. Subaru on the other hand is always in awd and the power is more evenly distributed 50/50.
@Myjungleloveoeoeoe

Normal driving around shouldn't really mess with traction control. Maybe when you break loose it might run into some issue as the rear tires will over turn, yet the programming should be to get a stopped tire moving in which case that won't happen with a torq locker installed, so my thought here is you should be good with respect to traction control. Yet onto stability control if you are not accelerating stability control should be fine again... Yet if you are accerating you may loose stability correction. Yet again if you are accelerating that usually means you are in control of your turn, usually. What would happen is the brake would go on, but instead of just breaking one intendend tire it would brake the entire axel. Not entirely desireable Yet again if you are off the throttle everything should be normal. In the winter I am in the throttle with stability assist aiding on my turns, so this probably wouldn't be so desireable there. I think if offroad is your desire over safety winter driving one of these is a must if you are set on a Subaru, otherwise probably not.

@TorqMastersIndustries 4 года назад
HI D Subie! Check out the YT Channel "Power of your Brains" they have some videos on xmode on, off, and with an without a TORQ Locker. Basically the X mode don't matter after you install a locker. Tire wear depends on type of tire (car vs all terrain) and tire compound. A car tire will wear faster than an all terrain or mud terrain because car tires have less tread.

@@freedom_foz_6337 - we can't post photos in replies, but to describe it: look where the axle inserts into the differential. If there is a plate with 5 bolts on the side of the diff that the axle goes into, that's a 5 bolt. If there's a ring around the axle with with looks like 30 teeth, then this is a one bolt. we have a locker model for both styles of differentials, with open differential cases. Hello Torq. I know that you are called T-lockers to LOCK wheels for offroad. Your stuff is build for low speeds, high loads, steep inclines, but how does it like high speeds, high rpm, and track day cornering? I'm not a type of guy to be into LSD's solid lockup sounds better. Also doing something for FWD? For example honda civics, camrys, corollas to help in snow. In a hairpin corner, it would unlock, mid turn, then I floor the pedal, inside wheel, which should spin slower, starts one wheel peeling, until inside wheel matches outsides speed and they continue spinnjng together? Did i understood working principle correctly?
@TorqMastersIndustries
@TorqMastersIndustries 5 лет назад
@Gedas - there are no horsepower or speed limitations to the TORQ Locker. The Locker will unlock and ratchet on the road when making turns with little throttle applied. The more throttle in the turn the more the locker locks up. If you floor it in the middle of a turn while the locker was ratcheting, you may feel some feedback as the rear tire speeds change to the same speed. For most people, learning and adjusting to the locker is very easy.

@TorqMastersIndustries
@TorqMastersIndustries 5 лет назад
@Supermikey610 thanks for the comment! We have not tested a TORQ Locker in the front R160 differential of Subaru's yet.... but for on-road driving it would likely be not recommended to install a front locker. A rear locker is awesome. Some of the folks out there are installing a center diff lock controller to lock torque bias to 50/50 front/rear for offroad use and then switching to 100 front for on road use. Turning their Subaru into a front wheel drive vehicle on the road saved fuel and made the rear locker very, very quiet.
@tonyn1991

You can’t run it in the front diff because the front diff is not R160. You can run it in the rear R160 diffs but you run the risks of breaking their pencil thin shafts.

Pretty fucking hard to install unless you have a new subi or the 5 bolt. My subit is about 10 years old and the r160 was fused they could not even remove the 1bolt. They had to order new parts and cut it out. So before you buy make sure you get your subi checked out to see if you have hundreds of dollars more on install than you previously thought.

Happy to help. The locker will ratchet at neutral to moderate throttle when making turns on the road. If you stand on the throttle the locker will not ratchet in a corner and both rear tires will spin at the same speed. Depending on your tire type, you can break the tires loose if you try to. Our products are popular with Volvo drift cars in Europe, they get sideways for fun! Drive with a rear locker like you did when it was stock, you will notice some differences here and there, but for most people it is very easy to get accustomed to.

@TorqMastersIndustries 4 года назад
The TORQ Locker has no tire size, horsepower or mileage limitations in their 4 year warranty. We've been manufacturing this style of locking differential since 2003 and some of those are still on the road. We use 9310 alloy and heat treat the gears for optimal wear life. I've seen 50,000 miles on a locker and it still looks brand new. As far as premature failure, you are way more likely to break an axle shaft then ever hurt the TORQ Locker. The TORQ Locker could fit the front differential as well, but we do not suggest that for on-road driving due to excessive CV wear.

@tipit0086 4 года назад
@@TorqMastersIndustries So if I understand correctly it takes care of slight differentiation of normal driving through ratcheting, but when there could be significant differentiation such as only one wheel spinning as can happen in an open differential, it locks both wheels together ??

So what you're saying is that you can run these locked all surfaces unlike a 4x4 SUV say a FJ full time rear wheel with shiftable high low 4wheel. Running locked would be, well bad on non slippery surfaces. What does this do different and do you have a setup for the new Crosstrek 18,19 and soon 20
@TorqMastersIndustries
@TorqMastersIndustries 5 лет назад
Hi @Nomad Mav Yes, it's totally OK to drive a Subaru with a rear TORQ Locker on all surfaces, on or off road. We manufacture locking differentials for many SUV's like Jeeps, Toyota's and pick up trucks, all fine for front or rear lockers. The TORQ Locker will ratchet and allow for wheel speed differentiation when turning on or off road. The stock Subaru setup, once you lift a wheel, all the torque goes to the wheel in the air, which is bad. You want torque applied to the wheel on the ground, and the only way to do this reliably is with a locking differential. Yes, we have Subaru Crosstrek models, please check our website for fitment.

My 2010 cvt was flawless but did get stuck a few times only when backing up and every time it was in a flat Ski resort parking lot🤦‍♂️. Going forward it was unstoppable. Lol Rear diff locker is interesting. It’s strictly friction triggered or is it some how switched on?
@TorqMastersIndustries
@TorqMastersIndustries 5 лет назад
The TORQ Locker is an automatic mechanical locker, there's no on or off switch, it just always works. When you make a turn the locker will ratchet to allow for wheel speed differentiation.

So i thought Subaru's have a system that will transfer torque to the wheel that has grip by applying brake to the spinning wheel. Am i wrong?
@MountainPF
@MountainPF 4 года назад
akelelias It does. But you also saw how poorly that works. I think Subaru’s system can’t fully stop the spinning wheel to transfer torque so you end up getting stuck and wearing out your brake pads.

anyone know if they make a locker for the front?
@TorqMastersIndustries
@TorqMastersIndustries 4 года назад
Hi MiCk! Most of the Subaru's have an R160 front differential, which is what we make a TORQ Locker for. It's not recommended to install a front TORQ Locker in a Subaru that drives on the road often, the locker will put lots of wear and tear on the steering and axles. So far we don't know of any customers that have installed a front TORQ Locker in a Subaru.

This IS a true locker. There are also many types of wheeling or offroading. Not everybody is into rockcrawling. For mud, sand, snow, forest trails, and small rocks, one may not need a hard-core 4WD or 4low. AWD, TCS, and a locker may be more than sufficient. Overlanding is getting more popular, and these softerroaders are great for that with some mods...like lockers, armor, and a winch. Not many hard-core rigs are going to match the 40+MPG I can get with my Crosstrek when commuting. The Wrangler 4xe may be a contender now, I guess.

It doesnt, its good enough for most folks but if you are really pushing the subie into some weird and dangerous areas this will give you the peace of mind of coming back out. Ive been nearly stuck a few timers on the WABDR and this would of come in handy so many times! Definitely buying this for myself and installing it this winter. Plus for the folks with a 6 speed manual who dont have x-mode...this is a absolute must or at least i'll find out when I blow my money this winter on one!

supermikey610 definitely catered to folks with a manual, x-mode performs flawlessly when in an open diff situation, I've been in several situations where my Toyota Tacoma would have struggled and x-mode in the subie just crushed the trail. I'm satisfied with the X-Mode performance and coming from years of off road experience I say save your money if you already have it.

@TorqMastersIndustries 5 лет назад
@@mikerobinson8734 X mode will never out perform a true locking differential like the TORQ Locker. Many, or let's say, most Subaru owners will never need a Locker, but those that know they need one will greatly benefit from the TORQ Locker. There are a few videos out there now of TORQ Locker vs. X mode, check out the channel PowerOfYourBrains. The TORQ Locker out performs the X mode.

Torq-Masters Industries Never said X-Mode would out perform at all. I just speak from personal experience when I say that if you have it don't waste your money, you couldn't possibly benefit with the torq locker over X-mode if you already have it in your subaru. I've been in the hairiest of conditions with my old and new subie. With 2 wheels on the ground one in front and one in rear totally cambered and teetering and X -mode performed flawlessly! I had a 2017 Tacoma with a rear locker that would have struggled where Xmode behaved like full lockers. I see the benefit in the manuals but definitely not worth the money for the same results in performance.

@@mikerobinson8734 There are many levels of difficulty when it comes to offroading. We are elevating the Subaru platform by offering a true locking differential for an affordable price. Sorry fella's but as a Jeep guy I just don't see the point. Watching your Subaru's teeter totter over terrain is hilarious. A body on frame solid axle vehicle (ie. Wrangler) would simply flex and droop a tire and follow whatever terrain you want to take it through. For the money you spend trying to make a Subaru do things it's just not designed for, you could just build a Jeep (which is perfectly designed for the stuff your doing).

Everyone knows there's better vehicles for offroading than a Subaru... But it's fun. It's all about taking a family grocery getter, taking it wheeling, and seeing just how far you can make it and with what modifications. Is it ever gonna outperform a Jeep? No, not at all. Is it tons of fun to build, abuse, and fix? Yes.

@@TylerScranton Ya, I get that. I just question putting thousands of dollars into one trying to make it an "off road" car because at that point you could have gotten into something better suited for more hard core stuff. As a Jeep guy I get the fun in building one part and if that's kinda your thing with a Subaru then hell ya, I get that. And just fyi, I like Subaru's. I almost bought one until I found out about the oil consumption issue with the 2.5 liters. If I do end up getting one I'll leave it stock and use it for my around town daily driver car and still take it camping and stuff when I'm going to areas where my Jeep is just not necessary. My Jeep is a beast to drive on the highway and I love the idea of the comfort the Subaru offers while still being very capable on light off road trails.
