I still love this movie, but its flaws have definitely become more apparent. I think the biggest one is how underutilized Thor is. He has the least screen time, he doesn't even enter the movie until like 30 minutes in, and he doesn't really have a _moment._ Everyone else has at least one moment to shine. Tony's "We have a Hulk" exchange with Loki, Cap jumping in to stop the fight between Thor and Tony, Hulk's "I'm always angry", Natasha tricking the trickster god into spilling his plans, even Hawkeye has moments like the no look shot and getting Loki to catch the exploding arrow. But Thor's just kinda there for most of the movie. But they made up for it by giving him the best moment in Infinity War, a movie that was basically just 160 minutes of moments.

You being up a good point, but I disagree. Thor had his meeting in the iods with Iron Man, his conversation with Loki on the helicarrier, and he gets to take Loki back to Asgard. Some great moments each.

good luck on your finals haha. How disrespectful of them to have exams the same week infinity war is released. Shameful, haha. This breakdown was great. And makes us realize that the Avengers, or the long 10 year MCU in general, wasnt a sure fire success in waiting. It was risky. and Marvel NEEDED this movie to keep the rest of the MCU going. Love the video.

1 of my favorite MCU movies but 1 of my biggest gripes was how Cap seemed to be a little undervalued compared to the other Avengers. Even though he's a super enhanced individual he always seemed to play second fiddle to the likes of Thor, Hulk, and even Iron Man. Not to mention that his suit in the film still bugs me til this day. I was a little worried if he'd gain more traction in later films but thank god he eventually did. But anyways great video and good luck on your finals man.

well technically speaking, thor and hulk obviously are much stronger than him and tony's suite can already strengthen him as we see in the movies not to mention other stuff he can do, so its natural that if you compare them then cap being a super enhanced human doesn't look that impressive.

The Avengers was the first marvel movie I ever saw, since I was only ten at the time and hadn't been allowed to see any of the previous ones. And I absolutely loved every minute of it. As someone that grew up with comic books, this movie was my childhood dream. And to this day, having gone back and seen the ones before Avengers, as well as every other MCU film and rewatching Avengers at least a dozen times, it's still one of my favorite movies ever.

Yeah, Cyclops was a likeable character, but he doesn't hag emuch except for his relationship with Jean and maybe the Professor, plus a little bit of rivalry with Wolverine. To everyone else, he's just there. Cap is the straight shooter who's actually really likeable and nuanced.

I just saw Infinity War and Thanos was a surprisingly sympathetic character, definitely the best part of the film. I guess they didn't have time but I'd love to see the characters interact with each other more. I just felt that the film was a bit tonally inconsistent (humour and then back to super serious scenes).

That would be GOTG VOL 2 for me because it is easy to see that James Gunn understands and cares about the characters and story he had created and, alongside Infinity War, it left an emotional impact to me, something that most MCU films lack. It also has the best cinematography, color palette, character and costume design imo.

I remember liking Iron Man 1 and 2 enough but found myself bored as hell coming out of Thor and Captain America the easter eggs to a larger universe and an obnoxious best friend wanting to see all of the MCU movies no matter what were the main reason for me to go watch those movies. I wasn't very hyped for the Avengers as I didn't see at all how they would manage to make work on screen all these heroes while to me most of their early movies didn't work at all the only beacon of hope to me was Whedon as I was watching Buffy The Vampire Slayer for the first time back then and loved Doctor Horrible Sing Along Blog (soooooo much). Needless to say I was still very sceptical going in the theater I wasn't even a fan of the comics avengers anyway. And then everything changed, I got the strongest nerdgasm of my life watching it, I ended up seeing it 5 times in theaters and buying the DVD as soon as it came out, I have a hard time watching it now 'cause the Black Widow/Loki scenes and the general plot are kinda weak and I know it by heart but MAN it was insanely good every character was shining bright like a star I loved how Loki and Thor interaction sounded like campy nine year olds playing war using fancy words with their kinda ridiculous outfit in a more grounded world. Hulk was everything anyone liking the character would want and what they did with Hawkeye was such a good way to show how capable he was without getting the short hand of the stick 'cause as the villain he got a good amount of screentime to be just a badass bowman. This film feel like it shouldn't have work and yet... it did. It was a true cinematic experience for any comicbook fan I think and to this day you can say all you want that Winter Soldiar or Ragnarok or Civil War are great but Avengers is still my all time favorite. Thanks for the video man and stay fresh.

It's nothing exceptional really, it's just a cute thing I picked up...that those two seem to get along with each other better than they do with the others. Like, they have more "combos" while fighting (it happens once in The Avengers but multiple times in Age of Ultron, like when Thor hits the shield to create a shockwave against Hydra or when Thor throws the shield against Ultron's army, I think they have at least one everytime they do battle together) and they even have a little inside joke ("what, were you sleepy?" / "what, were you napping?"). I thought that it made sense because they are the ones who are really out of place in the modern world

One thing I love about the first Avengers movie is the fact that it connects all the previous movies together. Iron Man being rejected from the Avengers initiative, Captain America trying to find his place in the modern world, Bruce Banner just wanting to be left alone, Thor and Loki's storyline, the Tesseract, etc. They all came together nicely in the Avengers. What I noticed is we didn't get that in Age of Ultron. The story of Tony Stark destroying all his suits, Captain America being on the run from SHIELD/Hydra, Thor preventing a galactic catastrophe all seem like different stories from what we get in AoU. Hence, why AoU wasn't as good a movie as the first Avengers movie.

I don’t understand the hate for Age of Ultron. The movie was fantastic in my opinion. It really set the tone for Infinity War, giving you a look into the power of the Infinity stones with the mind stone. Setting up Thor: Ragnarok with Hulk flying away on the Quinjet. Hulkbuster vs. Hulk scene. The introduction of Ultron was epic. Black Widow’s interaction with Hawkeye’s children. The movie is just full of awesome scenes. Also, THE GREATEST OPENING SCENE OF ANY MARVEL MOVIE. Hands Down.
@dannybenhur6123
@dannybenhur6123 6 лет назад
I agree Loki has the most Generic motivation in this movie...that is he wants to rule earth, but what works is that he is not attacking Avengers with Brute force he wants to attack them internally by surrendering himself to Avengers making Bruce Banner into Hulk and diverting the attention of Shield and Avengers...and opening a space portal right on Stark Tower and using Hawkeye efficiently....might not be Smartest Villian but he is one of the most charming villians..what really works is despite having lame motivations, his motivations from Thor movie continue in Avengers giving the core reason why he wants to rule, so, in Avengers they didn't need to explain Loki's motivation...
@jessicatennis5318
@jessicatennis5318 6 лет назад
IMO you are completely wrong about Loki. Coming out of THOR, he is hurt and angry, all he wants is vengeance and getting back at his brother and ultimately getting back at Odin, for in his mind for rejecting him. He feels he has been lied to and his entire life has been a farce. He decides to be the monster that he thinks his Father and family feel about him, but doesn't understand that they don't. In The Avengers, he is just angry and the opportunist and ability to be good at times is just gone. Thor 2 you see him let go of his anger towards Thor as they bond to get revenge for their mother's death and becomes the opportunist again. Finally you see Loki let go of his anger towards Odin and it turns into shame in Thor 3 which finally allows his character to come full circle.

I love Whedon's character work. He's too quippy, and he was the wrong choice for Justice League, but in both Avengers films, his characterization is top-notch. Yes, even Age of Ultron. It's not perfect, but I really like that movie for the characters. (Yes, I like the Bruce Natasha ship. It's misunderstood. She is manipulating him to have Hulk around her little finger, for the good of the Earth. Think about it. She pulled deception after deception after deception in other movies. Playing nerdy Bruce Banner is another one. That romance felt so awkward because it was. It was an unhealthy relationship, and that's the point.)

You say Avengers isn't a flawless movie, but even so it's possibly one of the most *tightly* organized of all the movies in the MCU. Every scene seems to be intricately designed with purpose and the fat trimmed so thin there is no particular scene that doesn't fit. I would say the biggest success of the Avengers movie is that it made no glaring flaws. Anything that can be seen as a flaw can be easily minimized unless you object to the film as a whole.

I don't necessarily blame Whedon for Age of Ultron's shortcomings. Yes, he directed it. But in rewatching it and reading about the production, you can see the moments where the studio demanded certain scenes and certain beats to take place. It's probably the closest Marvel/Disney was to being as controlling and problematic as Warner/DC has been for the DC films. They've since loosened their grip on the wheel and now we have excellent works like Ragnarok, the Guardians films, and Black Panther because of it. Really interested to see if Infinity War has similar issues to Age of Ultron or if the Russo's were given a bit more room to work with their tools.

The beautiful thing is how Hulk's words at the end of Avengers perfectly set up his Arc in Infinity War. There's an expectation that he's always angry and that the Hulk can always come out. But with what happens against Maw is actually startling to the audience. It's a break in expectation, and actually creates more depth to the character. Great Point, Midnite

I thought they did good with Thor and Loki's relationship in the Avengers. It works as a great sequel to Thor.

I know what’s you mean about the chitari and that’s one thing I love about Infinity Wars. With the chitari being Thanos’ murderous enablers on (possibly many many?) worlds I now watch THE AVENGERS and think “f*#k you, chitari, F*#K YOU!”

This Hulk was the worst Hulk we’ve seen on screen. The previous Hulk from the Incredible Hulk movie was way better. Seeing this gorilla hulk in this movie was very disappointing.

What do you mean the character Hulk “failed to land twice”???? If you’re talking about The Incredible Hulk from MCU’s phase one, then you are VERY wrong. If you look back you’ll realize that is a very good movie. Comic accurate and a badass looking Hulk more than Ruffalo’s. People just shit on that movie because it’s “an old Marvel movie” and they’re just not fans of the Hulk character.

Thor had his movie in 2009 or 2010, Hawkeye was teased in Thor, Black Widow was introduced in Iron Man 2. They were all represented before Avengers.

Great job on this video! I'm a long time Marvel fan and I especially love the X-Men, so I could never forgive Fox for making Cyclops (my favorite X-man) such a boring character in the movies in favor Wolverine, whom I dislike. What makes the MCU so great is that they managed to turn one of my least favorite comic book heroes (Captain America) to one of my favorite MCU heroes. Here's hoping that, whe. They introduce the X-men in the MCU they'll give Cyclops the Captain America treatment.

I got a question about the future tho... We can all agree that phases one through 3 were just setting up Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet, being everything from before Avengers 1 to setup Avengers, which in itself was just a setup for Infinity War. (I should also note, I'm not saying that it's 100% the case, I don't work for Marvel, not to mention the Avengers by itself stands like a solid movie, this is just my opinion, but here's the thing, the plot itself is about Loki working for Thanos, if that doesn't scream "setting up Infinity Wars" I don't know what that is then) However, what happens after Avengers 4? Genuine question from someone who's not that well informed about the comics, like what could be the next "big plan" for the MCU?

The only other Whedon work I’d ever seen was Firefly, which I loved because of the dynamics of the team. Halfway through watching Avengers, I correctly guessed this was also Whedon.

'The Avengers' is STILL a lot better than that stupid Visa commercial! Sorry, but seeing a sales pitch interrupting super heroics doesn't sit well with me. Then again, I hate Super Bowl commercials in general.

1. Everybody I knew were RAVING about this movie before it came out. Nobody cared about the clash of genres ever since Van Helsing, and what sells these big movies is exciting marketing. 2. You don't need a separate movie to introduce a character. James Gunn introduced 5 and beyond in his movie in a single motion.

This movie was very well knit on the heroes coming together part. The villains though... Loki was forced into it. And the chitauri army was lame. And Cap & Thor were kinda underused. But hey. Avengers set the stage for the age of comic book movies these days... Great job!

I agree on the hole Chituari thing. ( is that how you spell it? ) And that's why it's so nice that we find out in Avengers 3, that the Aliens and the Chituaris where there just to kill 50% of the people. I mean that makes sense. And for Loki to take the space stone and to rare down the Avengers. Cause it sounds like Thanos had it all planned out from the beginning. Damn. Ultron is the real second villain, sure Zemo was a villain. But the chituaris where controlled by Loki, and Loki was controlled by Thanos, technically Thanos was the villain for two films.

I know I commented this on a previous video, but could you take a break from talking about Marvel and DC to watch and review the Netflix original animated series Stretch Armstrong and the flex fighters? I would love to hear your thoughts on this underrated superhero adventure series. This show was developed and produced by some of the creative minds behind the Spectacular Spider-Man animated series.

Always love your vids - hope finals went well - wonder what you’re up to almost a year later? Apart from doing this, obvs.! Agree about Loki in this film. I think Whedon did a good job, but I was intrigued to listen to the Director’s Commentary and hear him moan that he’d been bequeathed a Loki that WASN’ T a two-dimensional bad guy! Which probably explains the flatness. On the other hand, I loved the Chitauri. The fact that they looked and acted so completely alien - and we never learned anything about them - really heightened the horror of their sudden pouring out of a hole in the sky. I also liked the way they all dropped dead as soon as The Sanctuary got nuked - a nice consistency in the implication that their life support was controlled by the mothership and while they could easily survive in space, they had no chance in Earth’s atmosphere.

Okay another correction. Around the 5:35-45 Mark there is an interview where Samuel Jackson told the writers of the Ultimates that if they were going to use is likeness if they ever made a movie he wanted to play the Role. As a matter of fact in the ultimate comics there is a line in which the Avengers or Ultimate are talking and joking about which actors they would want to play them and Nick Fury says Samuel L Jackson while looking just like him Now I understand you are in school and doing videos like this are time consuming BUT, RESEARCH MAN! Research is the most important thing when writing a story or doing an essay, even if it is a video essay.

Captain, we're awaiting your thoughts on Infinity War. I know you must be busy but just wanted to let you know: We're excited to hear from you. At least I am. I can't really speak for everyone else. There's probably a few more people that agree with me though.

My biggest problem with Joss Whedon's Marvel movies is what he does with the relationship between Tony Stark and Steve Rogers. In the comics, they are the best of friends, and co-leaders of the Avengers ( in an alternate reality where Tony was born a woman they even got married). This is what gave comic Civil War so much depth, because these two guys who are best friends now have to fight each other over their beliefs, and that hurts to watch. In the MCU, specifically Avengers and Age of Ultron, they never develop that sort of relationship. They're teammates, coworkers, they get along fine in casual moments, but they're not friends, not really. So the Civil War movie lost a lot of what made comic civil war so heavy and meaningful.
