Watch The Patriot (2000) Now: AAN.SonyPicture...
In 1776 South Carolina, widower and legendary war hero Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) finds himself thrust into the midst of the American Revolutionary War as he helplessly watches his family torn apart by the savage forces of the British Redcoats. Unable to remain silent, he recruits a band of reluctant volunteers, including his idealistic patriot son, Gabriel (Heath Ledger), to take up arms against the British. Fighting to protect his family's freedom and his country's independence, Martin discovers the pain of betrayal, the redemption of revenge and the passion of love.

Jason Isaccs doesn't get enough credit. He plays this role perfectly (his best performance imo), then the next year he plays a hard-lined and heroic US Army Captain in Black Hawk Down. Then of course he's Lucius Malfoy also...great actor.

@@Dime_time333 the real life character Tavington is based on was British Col. Banastre Tarleton. Tarleton was a brave yet ruthless cavalry commander who had a reputation for killing surrendering troops. He was defeated at the Battle of Cowpens by Daniel Morgan (whom Benjamin Martin is based on) but unlike the movie, Tarleton survived and escaped.

But not every film has to be that. It's still an enjoyable movie. But, anyone who's really into history, has read books on it, listened to podcasts, watched the documentaries etc. has a hard time suspending their disbelief at a few points in the film. In October 1780, O'Hara was promoted to brigadier and became commander of Brigade of Guards. He became Lieutenant General Charles Cornwallis' second-in-command and good friend. During Cornwallis' pursuit of Major General Nathanael Greene to the Dan River, O'Hara distinguished himself at Cowan's Ford, North Carolina on 1 February 1781. He also led the British counterattack at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse on 15 March 1781, which led to General Greene withdrawing from the field of battle. After Jason Isaccs says, "Why wait?" - the little head cock Mel Gibson does before he speaks. You can tell his character his picturing EXACTLY how he's going to kill Tavington. Incredible movie. Well cast and acted throughout!

Tavington: "You!!" "So you're the ghost, are you?!" "I remember you!" "On that farm!" "That stupid little boy!!!" 0:54 I think this is why Jason Isaacs was perfect for Lucius Malfoy.

Pretty sure even then, they would have a canvas of missing officers. Eighteen is a lot, especially for a fort area like that, and there were not as many officers per enlisted.

❤Jason Issacs played very well as the bad guy. I have not seen him in any movie where he was considered really good. Alan Rickman was my favorite actor to play really bad and really good man. and then in Harry Potter a basically good man forced at least placed in a position that was very difficult. Respect all their acting ability. Love Mel Gibson but also respect Alan Rickman skils

Continuity error at 1:03, Heath Ledger sits on his horse looking on at the confrontation, actor Leon Rippy is seen sitting on his horse next to him, in the next wide shot Rippy can be seen getting on his horse.
