This video is intended as an informational source for homeowners before they make a decision to buy the “cheapest” commonly available locks.
Of course, there are far better options in the Schlage line and we will cover those in future videos but this video is intended to only be a direct comparison between the F Series Knobs and B60 Series Deadbolts and Schlage’s J Series (old name was Schlage by Dexter) locks which are what pops up almost exclusively when searching for new hardware.
So please refrain from commenting about how it’s all “junk” blah blah blah.

Very informative, and the old adage rings true, you get what you pay for! It seems most folks don't change out their door hardware and locksets/leversets very often, so why not spend a little extra for a quality product you will have years of hassle free service from? Excellent video sir!

I prefer schlage A series locks, they are good medium duty locks with brass cylinders and steel and brass parts, these cost just over100 dollars but I've had one on my door for over 20 years and it still works fine. there is a D series heavy duty for about 300 dollars, Most home duty locks are made of cheap metal and die cast cylinders and some have plastic parts. Consider the cost of your house and lock you want to protect it with.

Thanks for a great video. 👍🏻 If the builder used the builder quality lock, I would find another builder. Where else did he cut corners. So many hack builders out there. I have seen 500k houses with two floors and have only one AC unit for the whole house. Greedy people out there.

I believe they're including the latch style (with the lip) with deadbolts to protect the wood trim from being smashed when the door is accidentally closed while the deadbolt is extended.

At 14:42 you say that the builders grade deadbolt is non-changeable, does that mean the keyway cannot be removed to rekey the lock?

No, it can be rekeyed but you can’t remove the cylinder with housing to put in a different keyway or replacement cylinder :)

Just a question why would you want to use a door handle strike plate for a deadbolt strike plate?
@selock
@selock 3 года назад
Dave medeco many brands of deadbolts strike plate look like knob strike plates now. They just do not have the bent in part that the latch rides on. I don’t know why mfg’s started making the switch but it has been going on for 8-10 years now with some.
@bms9144

One positive is it protects the wood trim or door frame from dings or paint damage if the door gets pulled shut (unsuccessfully) with the bolt extended. More useful on electronic locks with auto locking enabled.

@@selock Reference to off center is at 14:05. This may be a reference to deatbolt which I won't have anyway. My door is 1.25" thick (kitchen to garage door) The existing striker plate is 2" in height. I'm hoping to use the existing plate. Is this knob going to work here without modifications? I want to get it re-keyed to match the existing (non schlage) locks too. Is this lock what is called an 'F' series? Schlage F51A Andover 626 Entry Door Lock
@selock

@@COH2000 ahh ok yeah that’s if the hole is small or slightly off center the ring will cause problems. Dealing with knobs, especially the f you are ok even if the hole is off. The Andover (yes) F series will fit fine even on slightly misaligned holes.

At 10:00, this feature actually safeguards against accidentally locking yourself out, should you turn the inside knob with the lock actuator rotated. On some brands, you can open it like normal without realizing the outer knob is locked, and pulling the door closed behind you is then a huge mistake. My ninety year old aunt did this, in her bathrobe, in northern Minnesota, in -15 dead of winter, a quarter mile from the nearest neighbor. I never heard the details of how she made it back in, but others in the same situation might not be as resourceful as she. Knob locks are clearly inferior to deadbolts, as a heavy rock will snap off either knob.
@chrisfitch6301
@chrisfitch6301 4 года назад
I built a door that is 4.25" thick. What knob will work for this door?
@selock
@selock 4 года назад
Chrstohper Fitch none of these :) you likely will need to check with Emtek or Baldwin to see what max thickness they offer in keyed knobs. Passage style (non keyed) wouldn’t be a big problem as you could use a spindle style knobset out of Baldwin’s Estate tubular line but if you need keyed your choices are more limited. If exterior door you should really look into fitting a Baldwin mortise lock with longer cylinders for the thicker door

idk if it makes any difference but a little bit of a better way is to drill the holes bigger and fill with the same size dowel rods. ie 1/4 inch drill bit and 1/4 inch dowel rod. makes a perfect fit with no play

Why is there no way to remove the cylinder on the builder quality rim cylinder? Can't you just pop the clip off and use a hollow follower to push the core out like you were going to rekey it? Or is it held in by the big round chrome piece that's crimped on the tailpiece?

Those builders “quality” locks are generic.. Just the Name is Schlage.. Made by the same company that makes Defiant. In fact, the Defiant are better because the have the new stronger tailpiece. Just a SC1 key way instead of the KW1. Probably cost twice as much too.. Defiant sells at $10 at HD. What’s the price of those Jay? Happy New Year !!
@selock
@selock 5 лет назад
pjdambra yep, same thing as the old defiant, I actually did a “props to defiant” video on that change a while back. Single DB are shown on Google for about $17 and that only has about a 15-20% markup. So yeah basically just old defiant with SC key :) Happy NY!

Do NOT install more than a keyed and keyless deadbolt on a door. If you want more security against a brute force entry, use a door guardian!
@blazer6248
@blazer6248 4 года назад
Yea, but once they break the window next to/in the door, now they can't reach in and manipulate the lock after removing the door guardian. 🤷🏻‍♂️ A double cylinder with no key in it keeps that door from opening no matter if they remove the door guardian or not. And I thought those were to keep kids inside, anyway? 🤷🏻‍♂️
@bms9144
@bms9144 3 года назад
I used a double sided keyed deadbolt when I lived in an apartment. The idea being that if someone got in through a window (I was on the second floor), they would still have trouble getting stuff out the only door. When I was home I always left the key in the inside lock. If fire is a concern I question the idea that a door guardian is somehow safer. It still is going to delay exit. I worry less about fire than burglary or home invasion. Individual appetites for risk - no single solution works best for everyone.

@@bms9144 I don’t know where you’re from but double cylinders are illegal in most, if not all, rental properties.
@bms9144
@bms9144 3 года назад
@@GottSegneDich I put it on in the context of my own residence, not on behalf of the property owner. I removed it and reinstalled the original $9.99 thumbturn deadbolt when I moved out, however. I did leave the nice 12" double strikeplate with the 4" screws for the next resident. The property was in the process of remodeling all the units, and part of that was finally replacing the 20+ year old deadbolts and knobs with somewhat better new deadolts and levers. What one can do as a professional locksmith vs what one can do as a homeowner/renter. But I can understand your reluctance to install that kind of configuration for someone else. A big part of having that setup is always having a key in the inside cylinder when someone is home. I know Abloy, Mul-t-lock, and others sell deadbolts with locking thumbturns - best of both worlds but expensive.
