Hi Everyone! Just wanted to clarify that the laptop I share in the video which I've been using daily does not have an M1 chip since I got the 16 GB of memory which has the Intel i5. Another important aspect is the intel i5 can run Bootcamp however the M1 chip cannot. In order to run windows on the M1 chip you'd have to use Parallel and Windows 10 for ARM64, for more information I would checkout this article: www.forbes.com/sites/dwightsilverman/2021/04/14/you-can-finally-run-windows-on-your-m1-based-mac-but-with-a-catch/?sh=36959c441ccb .Also, the video is not sponsored and I purchased the laptop(s) myself. I wanted to share the laptop I use daily which I've been loving. Hopefully the video helps you with your laptop purchase. What laptop are you using? Any favourites?

Quick thing. I would love to hear how the M1 does with a program like Lumion, sketchup, archicad, Autocad & revit. Can the M1 perform as well as my windows based laptop with a 2060?

My stepdaughter and I just bought last night a customized I7 version of the 13 inches MacBook Pro with 32 GB of RAM and minimum SSD. She currently has the Air 13" version and it's definitely not an option for heavy work so we decided to upgrade her laptop, she is just beginning her studies at the university and her current Air 13" can't handle Rhino at all. I really recommend going up with the Intel I7 processor and 32 GB of RAM, remember this machine has the components **welded** directly into the mainboard!!! So there is NO way to upgrade the RAM or the CPU later on. Yes, it's expensive, but remember this investment should last for a minimum of 5 years during the degree studies and a little more until she can buy the next one by herself, keep that in mind. Good Video Ashley keep going, I just discovered you and subscribed to your channel. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Grecque! Happy to share and thank for sharing your workflow 😊 You bring up a great point that apple products work so well together. It really is a great workflow and I found that the products last longer in comparison. I had many different laptops until I switched over to MacBooks and now I can't go back. Like you said nothing beats the performance.

Thanks for sharing your experience Ashley but in my experience, I found windows laptops better specifically for more GPU performance. It does make 3d modeling and rendering more smooth and fun. As we know, it is a heavy task, and there is one 3d software that is not compatible with MAC OS, which is 3Ds Max. I just want to mention that it might be helpful. I'm suggesting Razeblade 15 or 14 and Asus ROG Zephyrus M or G series for the students looking for powerful thin and light laptops.

@architecture_tv 3 года назад
Hi Hossein! You're welcome, happy to share my experience 😊 I appreciate hearing yours too. I didn't know about the 3Ds max, since I don't really use it. Thanks for sharing this, its good to know. You could also partition your Mac to run windows through bootcamp. I used to do that on my old Mac for some programs which at the time weren't compatible but are now. Before getting into the Mac world I had a few window laptops with stronger specs on paper but after a year or two they would burn out. They couldn't keep up and the performance wasn't as great. Although the specs on paper seem to fall short in comparison, the apple parts are so well synchronized and optimized with each other that they out perform. So you can't necessarily compare them with each other in terms of specs. But I do realize the price difference which is why I only got a MacBook until I tried all the window options. I had an Asus gaming computer prior to getting into the Mac world and it burnt out the first year when I was doing my masters. So during the second year of masters I decided to get a MacBook Pro and I still have that laptop which is seen in the video. This of course was my experience but I heard others having good experiences with Asus. The only other laptop I might have tried which I didn't get a chance, would have been the Dell Alienware product line of laptops. Thanks for sharing 😊

Hey Ashley hope you are doing well. This video is so informative and helpful. I bought the new 16 inch Macbook pro 2 days ago and I am really looking forward to start the new school year with this computer. I have struggled a lot with my old Macbook air in the past years, as it wasn't very compatible for architecture softwares. Thanks again for all your detailed discussion. I am really excited to see what I am able to produce with the computer.

I think you should wait for 2 months because new MacBooks are coming with more powerful chip and the 16 inch mac that you bought is 2019 version with intel chip this means less performance than m1 or upcoming m1x chips

Hi Subaya! You're welcome, happy to share. You're going to love it. I couldn't believe the performance myself. The MacBook Pro will definitely be a better option for you over the Air, it has more power to deal with all the softwares. I'm excited for you, keep me posted on your experience with the computer.

Hi Piyush! this is a good point but honestly the M1 will do an amazing job, of course the next version is going to be even better but I don't think its necessary to wait especially if you need the device for school since the fall semester is starting soon. I always feel if you wait for the next best thing, you're always waiting. But if you can wait a month or two then its worth it but if you need it, I wouldn't wait. I also heard that there might be shortages for the new releases since there is a global chip shortage in the industry right now which has already been impacting many of the Mac computers and iPads. Keep us posted if your planning to get the next MacBook Pro, it would be great to hear your experience. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Hi Ashley! Your video is very well done and I really liked it overall but I’m a bit confused. You said you got the MacBook Pro with i5 (and turbo boost). You realize that this is not the M1 processor, right? Apple still sells their Intel versions of the MBP. And other than the processor, the computers look exactly the same (they didn’t change anything else). I hope you didn’t get an intel thinking you were getting the M1 😁. Also, you mentioned BootCamp for installing windows. That isn’t possible with the M1 chip (you’d need to install Parallels and use the still somewhat unreliable windows ARM preview). Also, I was hoping you’d mention the perfomance of the computer with some architecture softwares but you focused on Premiere Pro with I honestly have never seen an architect use on a day to day basis. But I really appreciated your video and will to help us decide which computer to get. Thank you!

Hi Pedroyoutube! Thank you for your feedback and your right the laptop doesn't have an M1 chip. I got a bit confused myself with the specs since I thought all the 2020 laptops had M1 chips but this wasn't my reason to get the laptop. This might also explain why I didn't have any issues with the Adobe Creative Suite. I've added a pinned comment to clarify and also updated the video title. I didn't purchased it for the M1 chip since the M1 chip only gets you 8GB of memory which is a bit tight. I've been using Premiere Pro daily since I'm also creating content on RU-vid but for architecture I also use Premiere Pro for editing building animation videos also known as building walk through videos (adding music and effects which could also be done with iMovie or other similar softwares). Along side Premiere Pro, I also use Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop daily from the Adobe Creative Suite. I'll do a more performance driven video with the various softwares (2D and 3D) since I think this might also help other people. Its good to know that Bootcamp doesn't work with the M1 chip and you'd have to run Parallels and Windows 10 for ARM64 (I'm going to do more reading about it). Appreciate the feedback and info 😊

Get the 16” or 15” model because it has a dedicated GPU (that’s what I did) the intel 13” is useless.

Hi Alohomorovich! You're welcome 😊 That was also my concern and now I really think its the perfect screen size. So much easier to carry around and move around to work. I thought that this is a review from an architect perspective not a video editor/ content creator one.. like can you run revit? Lumion? Can you render vray scenes and work with complex cad drawings? Probably not! Like yea the design is awesome but for an architect i think windows laptops are still the way to go
@architecture_tv
@architecture_tv 2 года назад
Hi Bahaa! Thanks for the feedback. As mentioned I've been using it mainly now for Adobe Creative Suite to create diagrams and 2D drawings along with content creation. I realized now I didn't go into the software program details, I'm thinking about doing another video which will dive into the details. However, when I was in grad school I used the MacBook pro and ran Bootcamp in order to run the window programs which weren't available on macOS. I did all my rendering on the windows side through bootcamp. This worked well for me. But now many programs are compatible on macOS including Rhino and AutoCAD. Along with the adobe creative suite (which during my time wasn't available). I've been using the compatible programs so far and if needed I will run bootcamp. The two programs which isn't available on macOS is Revit, and Lumion to your point. However, you could look into running bootcamp. Lumion might be tricky to run on parallel which I heard you get a lot of crashes. Here are some articles which might provide more info: machow2.com/best-way-run-windows-mac/ , www.forbes.com/sites/dwightsilverman/2021/04/14/you-can-finally-run-windows-on-your-m1-based-mac-but-with-a-catch/?sh=d5cb75d1ccb4 , and support.apple.com/en-ca/boot-camp . Bootcamp seems to be more stable than parallels, something to take into consideration. It also might get a bit annoying switching between windows and macOS but you start to build a workflow. But in the end it depends on what works best for you and your workflow.

Hi Deepak! It's hard sometimes to pick the right computer. With the Macbook Pro you can run windows through bootcamp which will allow you to run windows software. This is what I did when I was in graduate school. You could also run windows on the M1 but theres a bit of a catch so it might be better to get the MacBook Pro which is similar to what I got. I made a mistake in the video thinking I had the M1 chip since I upgraded my memory which runs on the intel chip. I thought all the latest laptops had the M1 chip which wasn't correct however I still found the performance to be outstanding (which also made me think it was the M1). Sorry for the confusion. I would recommend looking into running windows on the M1 before considering the laptop here are some links with more info: www.forbes.com/sites/dwightsilverman/2021/04/14/you-can-finally-run-windows-on-your-m1-based-mac-but-with-a-catch/?sh=d5cb75d1ccb4 and machow2.com/best-way-run-windows-mac/ .
