Do you need to level your lawn? I have a spot that really needs to be flattened out but the space is not ready for leveling. If I tried right now I'd probably kill a lot of existing grass on accident.
Before you level a lawn you have to do a few things in advance. None are complicated or hard, they just take a bit of extra time and thought.

Grabbed a bag if quickcrete all purpose sand and put some in a small tub. Takes a day or two here in CA for it to dry out. Been hand spreading some low spots and it's slowly leveling out. Don't wanna go overboard and smother tall fescue. Small increments and your low spots will be corrected.

yeah, my sand (~250 lbs) dried out very quick, even though we got a random sprinkling the other afternoon. Today I'm finishing up drying out my soil mix before combining the two for incremental leveling

Hello. I just wanted to make sure I am taking your main point away here. Are you saying that if the grass is healthy and growing then it shoud be able to survive and push through new sand/soil that is laid over it when leveling? I live in the northeast and I was going to apply loam/soil to my enter back lawn this spring and just overseed because the levelilng needs are extensive and the lawn is really thin. But I do have a good amount of health grass there and I don't want to kill it if I can prevent that. Is this approach a good one? I will be using tenacity if I seed instead of another preemergent.

So I have a spot in the front yard that needs leveling from a small tree that was removed years ago. It is approximately a 2 foot by 3 foot section. What is the proper sand top soil ratio to mix. Also is applying it in increments the best for this to avoid killing the grass! Thanks

50/50 mix of sand and soil should work. What is your grass type? If it's cool season don't smother it. Warm season won't be a big deal.
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic 3 месяца назад
to add to what dirtygarden said, I'd say if you already have a sandy soil then a 70-30 mix sand to soil would be best to match what's already in the lawn. You probably have an abundance of organic matter under the ground there due to the removed tree so extra sand well incorporated may not be terrible. Organic matter shrinks over time which is why your space is now a depression. Sabnd won't shrink so a bit extra when well incorporated into the existing soil isn't bad. To avoid killing the existing grass it may be best to aerate the area manually then topdress with your leveling material a little bit at a time every couple weeks so as to not snuff out anything already growing there. Stay diligent with it and by Fall it will be way flatter.

Ok great! Thanks for the great advice and information. I just got my soul sample back and it showed deficient in nitrogen and phosphorus and potash was sufficient. Any recommendations for fertilization?

So,?? When pushing grass out of disease, apply fert, let it grow out longer than usual? Then bag clippings? Doesn’t excess fert and wet condition create more disease ?
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic 3 месяца назад
Depends on the disease. My grass has rust fungus on it, normally we see that later in the year but I have it now due to my climate in the winter, the relative youth of my grass, and the constant shade the area was under for months straight. Rust fungus can be pushed out easily in good growing conditions with fertilizer, removal of bagged clippings, and healthy watering patterns. There are many other diseases that that doesn't work for. Since this video wasn't focused on the disease I didn't say it (although maybe I should have) first course of action is identify the disease then treat it. To level without killing the grass the grass needs to be on the healthier side. Some people may just have drought stress or something else, so for me it's drought stress and rust which are easy enough to fix in late March. Hope all that makes sense.

Should i wait until fall to do a really big leveling? Also have an above ground pool impression to fill in
@DirtygardenCA
@DirtygardenCA 3 месяца назад
during the growing season is probably the best time. The grass can push itself out of the sand so it's not smothered.

@@DirtygardenCA what does that mean? I live in NY 🥺 I plan on aerate and overseed in the fall too
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic 3 месяца назад
I saw from your other comment that you live in NY, you probably should wait until around May when your lawn soil fully warms up and you start getting excellent growing conditions. If you don't have much grass there if any then just fill it up with a sandy loam mix that you buy or make yourself and level it as best as you can all at once. I'd recommend seeding the entire low spot with an annual rye to get quick growth on the area knowing full well it will probably die off by August. This will give you a bit of dead top growth to overseed your ultimate grass into in August. If you already have some grass growing in the low spot then wait until May and do small-scale leveling (a little bit at a time) every few weeks and by Sept when things are at peak growing conditions for fall you can then finish the leveling off. Too much all at once will mulch down and kill off the cool season grasses underneath. The best reason to do it incrementally is to preserve the exact grass type in your lawn without introducing a different type/variety in just the localized area via seed. Lots of different ways to do this though; just choose one, understand the drawbacks and benefits and then own your decision. Good luck!

thanks Major! I've got all the material all dried out, I'm tempted to just spread it now but want to make a video all about the mix before I spread it...ohh the challenges of too much work and not enough play.
