Your explanation of why to put dry sugar in the rapid feeder as opposed to on paper over the frames is fantastic. I had never thought of the effect of breaking that seal with the inner cover by opening it. Brilliant. I also feel that some moisture near the cluster is good. Your attention to detail is so valuable for the rest of us.... Keep up the great work... Thank you!

Answer for question about cleaning your hives and tools and parts , something that is a little safer than a heat gun and it serves a good hive cleaning system for pathogens, I used to used a very expensive wall paper steamer but now days Wagner makes an inexpensive steamer , it cleans everything and it uses just simple water and it makes very hot steam that will sanitize your frames , hive bodies and you can clean all of your tools and it’s a fabulous way to clean honey out of hard to reach places, hot steam is magic !!!! There are cheap steamers on Amazon I imagine but for $120 the Wagner I have is very much worth it’s weight in gold , hope this helps give a natural solution to cleaning and sanitizing, p.s. the hot steam kills mites and mite eggs you can’t see 😁

Hate to ask the obvious... why not increase the height of brood boxes off the ground so skunk can’t reach landing board??
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 4 года назад
Because you end up with unstable hives that are too high to tend to when all the boxes are on. I do have hives that the skunks don't touch. I was told early on by a "prominent bee educator" that any hive stand that causes skunks to expose their stomachs by standing on their hind legs will be avoided by skunks. It wasn't until this year that I actually got video of their behavior which proved that instruction to be completely incorrect. (';') BUT, this is one skunk that was doing that, the other two do not rear up on their hind legs. I think this skunk is special.

I just did some research online on why varroa numbers increase in fall... some research suggests that the forager bees are bringing them in from poorly maintain hives from other locations. there is an article at entomologytoday . org. The title is... Why do Varroa Mite Populations sometimes increase in the fall? We may have to be careful to do open feeding if neighbors are not treating for mites.
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 4 года назад
I'd rather have the bees at an open feeding/robbing station than have them attacking weaker, potentially diseased hives and getting that exposure. Open feeding has reduced colony robbing pressure in my apiary as it gives the foragers something else to do. With late season mite checks, numbers can "seem" to be higher since there are fewer honey bees in the hive as summer foragers die off, leaving fewer mite hosts which results in higher mite counts per remaining honey bee. Lots of variables, Varroa resistant lines of bees will go a long way in reducing mite loads going into winter. Treatment may be required with some colonies.
@58Kym

I don’t think denatured alcohol would be good enough. In fact, you need to add water to denatured alcohol to get the best control. (I am not sure why but I think has something to do with the binding of molecules). Would it be getting through any pockets in the wax buildup? I don’t think so. And it normally has to sit for a few minutes to have a good response. While a lot of people don’t like to use sterilising chemicals, there are quite a few fairly safe chemicals that have a good bacterial control and perhaps viral control as well. I like the chlorine dioxide tablets like zydox. They are convenient to use and not particularly offensive (depending on the level of smell reaction, some people like it less), but the smell disappates quickly. It would be more effective and simpler to have all metal tools and use a glass bead steriliser scaled up for beekeeping tools. (You would need power of course for that which is restrictive for most keepers).
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 4 года назад
Just to follow up, the Bee Inspector removes all wax remnants and wipes his tools clean with the alcohol, he's not leaving residue on his tools. I didn't mean to imply he leaves wax and propolis on. Thanks for this explanation Kym!

Thanks Jack - this will be the first question addressed in FAQ 38 next Friday. I keep dry pollen subs separate from sugars - two distinct differences and purposes - I think pollen should be foraged for outside the hive, while sugars are a pure energy source/carbohydrate that doesn't have to coincide with foraging weather conditions. I've put these in the freezer for several days to kill anything on them and them have put them in the detached garage inside a netting that I bought in case I needed to move hives. Do you think this is adequate to keep out wax moths from destroying the comb or should I use a chemical? I've bought a wax moth chemical from Mann Lake but would prefer to avoid using it if there are other non-chemical ways that ensure my frames won't be slimmed up by any wax moth larva.

Fred great video again I have a problem my bees have stopped taking syrup down from the rapid feeder but it's filled with syrup how can I remove the syrup to replace with dry sugar Each time I go to The hives there are loads of bees in the feeding area of the feeder
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 4 года назад
Ok, the next time you to out to that hive, bring new dry sponges and use them to soak up the remaining sugar syrup, then just pour the dry sugar in there and as the center riser bees thin down, just remove the center clear capsule. :) IF there is only an inch or less of syrup, just pour in the sugar and let it soak up the syrup, that will raise the sugar content so much that it won't spoil and you can remove the center capsule when it's "sandy" in texture.

Hi, Fred. You said last week that this was your best honey year, thanks in large part to the over-achieving Saskatraz bees. Can you share how much money you got from how many production hives?
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 4 года назад
I don't like talking about money.... BUT, my FlowHiveII with the Saskatraz colony installed this spring yielded over $800 in RAW honey that my wife sells locally. That's just one hive. BUT - they were the standout producers with the tight second place coming in from my BeeWeaver (swarmed, so now mixed genetics) colony that came in at 9 gallons. The second Saskatraz colony with Langstrogh 10 frame solid bottom board, deep and then medium with Flow-Super on top yielded around 5 gallons. So, for me, that's a great honey year given that we aren't working the bees to get honey, I'm certainly happy to earn some side money from that. Hives without Queen Excluders outperformed those that had them on by quite a bit. One FlowHive with a Queen excluder, provided only 3 gallons of finished honey in their Flow-Super. Unpredictable to say the last.

Have you used the rapid round feeder over winter before? I don't think I've seen it in another one of your videos about overwintering. I'm wondering if the bees will be able to reach the sugar in the feeder as it's so far from the cluster (and heat).
@weasleoop
@weasleoop 4 года назад
By the time they would need the emergency feed at the feeder the cluster would be up there near the feeder.
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 4 года назад
I didn't have feeder shims on until this year, so I have not had the rapid-rounds in hives for a winter prior to this year. I agree with Carlos, if they get to the point that they need it, they will be at the top already. Also, when there are those warm days mid-winter, the bees fly out and also more throughout the hive and can access those resources before having to go back to a tight cluster as the cold returns. Remember, it's not a primary feed, it's an emergency ration.

I am still feeding pollen. Only because I want to keep a hive laying to improve thier chances. They went queenless late in the season. People have said be careful with that though because you can get summer bees as opposed to winter bees.
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 4 года назад
HI Andrew, where I live, I personally never feed pollen subs in the fall, but I do make it available in spring (February and later)... I want the brood numbers to dwindle down rather than build up going into winter. This is why I think they almost never use up their winter resources. Those who are into queen rearing and package bee sales, or other commercial ventures, will be providing pollen subs whenever the bees can fly/forage. They need higher in-hive numbers, but most do not reside where winters are extreme. We do need fat bees that can endure winter. I will be talking about pollen subs in the hive on Friday for FAQ 38.

Thoughts on OA treatment: Why other countries allow treatment with honey supers? Some countries allow everything until evidence of a problem are show. A guilty until proven innocent regarding safety. The USA leans to the opposite with new techniques and treatments. Why is it important not to add OA to honey when it’s already there and other food with higher typical OA are allowed? Some medical conditions like kidney stones require close monitoring of OA consumption. Many foods become off the menu. Honey has an expected amount and OA treatment MIGHT significantly increase the OA to problematic amounts.

@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 4 года назад
I just haven't needed that much and the single rapid round feeders are good for 8 or 10 frame configurations, and the round units tend to pool less syrup away from the center if your hive has a slight tilt. I found that the syrup would expire before the bees would use up all that's in the squared versions.

Hey Fred I have a question for you I don’t know if you’ve ever covered it the videos I’ve seen I have not seen dancer in the winter you say the cluster is clustered over brood I thought queens stop playing during the winter so does she lay all throughout the winter repopulating the bees that have died due to weather
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 4 года назад
Hi Robert, I have never had a colony completely without brood, at least in my Observation Hive where I can see them. BUT, the area with capped brood is always very small in winter. This is one reason why I think beekeepers get so frustrated when a cluster starves out within mere inches of plenty of food and resources. I think they get stuck over the brood to keep it viable and fail to move to the food. This is why I don't recommend boosting brood numbers going into winter. There really is no secret formula as even some of my smallest colonies have made it through winter defying the odds.

@@gregoryircink8797 I like the idea of leaving condensation for the bees to use, it's somewhat ironic that the more insulated hives seem to have more condensation problems if there are upper vents. The bees are master ventilators and I personally don't have a use for the Vivaldi boards, though there are many who certainly swear by them for bee survival.

Fred, as a new beekeeper, I'm trying to decide the best way to provide my bees with emergency food over the winter. The Rapid Round sounds like a good option, however, I am a little concerned about the excess moisture dripping through the center hole directly onto my bee cluster as I hear moisture is the number one killer of bees. Your comment will be greatly appreciated.

I have never had a moisture problem with this method... It has never dripped enough to drench the bees. BUT with inverted feeders, I have seen clusters move off to the back corner to avoid them. Which is why I never use inverted jars for winter feeding. The lids are "slightly" domed on some of them which should cause any drips to follow the lid interior to the circumference rather than dripping directly down.

Need your opinion, what is your opinion on a long Lang, inside backyard shed that has been insulated for winter and summer cooling?
@weasleoop
@weasleoop 4 года назад
My friend runs horizontal hives. The bees seem to like them more and they are easier to work.

I have not used the long-Lang "yet", but it is in my long-term planning and I do like the principal. It's a semi-permanent install, so I'm planning that carefully. I think I will mention this in FAQ 38 and solicit feedback from those who currently have them and discuss the advantages - heavy duty, easy access, better insulated, ready made frames and compatible equipment... sounds good to me!

That feeder is not good for winter because bees have to be in direct contact with the sugar. There were bees that died of starvation with 1 inch gap between the cluster and the sugar. It depends on the weather and if its verry cold they cant reach it. I make sugar fondant wich is inverted sugar - transforming sucrose into glucose and fructose and i place the cube directly over the frames .

This is what beekeepers use here , Apifonda ,special food for bees in winter. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cqZX1BbVJKc.html Its basically just inverted sugar. I didnt buy it lately and made my own from sugar and i know a retepy on how to make it without the use of a thermometer.

When outside temps rise into the 50's during winter, they break cluster and access it. If it's so cold they can't move the cluster, then no feed anywhere will be accessed and this is shy some colonies starve out with full frames of honey mere inches away. This is emergency feed beyond a hive well stocked with honey.

I planned to do the rapid rounds on my hives this year for emergency feed but was thinking I would put fondant instead of sugar in them. Last year I made candy boards and filled them with fondant and my bees did well . You didn’t mention using fondant so I’m curious if you feel that fondant is a mistake and I should go with the plain sugar instead?
@weasleoop
@weasleoop 4 года назад
I feed fondant. It is fine for feed.
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 4 года назад
I don't feed fondant just because I've never needed it and in general it's quite a bit more expensive than simply buying sugar. The sugar can be turned into syrup when spring hits, fondant remains as fondant and simply gets removed when meaningful foraging begins.

Is Oxalic acid present in the flower of the Oxalis plant? Could this be a medicinal source for the bees?

Yes, it's present in that and countless other plants, pretty much everywhere which is why it's always present in honey.

I can share that in my zone, 50 lbs of capped honey has been more than enough for the longest winters. The number of bees inside the hive going into winter will be the variable. I used to leave 100 lbs of honey on, and that was huge overkill. BUT, better to leave more than they need and just pull off the surplus in spring :)

Once a queen cells is sealed, can moisture get in or out? In other words does an incubator need humidity to hatch a queen cells?
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 4 года назад
Yes, there is an air exchange through the porous Queen Cell and humidity is very important. I would recommend around 73 - 77 % humidity if you are artificially incubating Queens.

@@kenthompson6539 That is correct, wax cappings on honey cells is water proof, the cappings for brood and queens is porous so the pupating can continue and respiration can occur.

Mr. Dunn, when treating a package with OA, why do I need to remove the queen? I don't remove the queen when treating my active hives.
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 4 года назад
It's not critical to remove her, BUT, since she's already in her own compartment, it's convenient not to put her through that stress. She will have been reared away from varroa, so it's just a nice touch to install her after the package gets treated.

haha! no shave November... i do no shave all winter. :) yeah, imagine spending the entire winter without a little water... oh my hexagonal hell! soooo thirsty! Alcohol should solve propolis pretty well.. most saps and other plant compounds will solve in alcohol. I like the heat gun idea though! Approved or not, I'm not using any chemical of any sort on anything I'm eating... oxalic acid is in many plants, true. In fact, that's one of the "poisons" in Rhubarb leaves. Fungi use oxaclic acid to "detect" their environment. Always good to air on the side of caution IMHO. Oh the FDA.. revolving door with Monsanto, Bayer, Pfizer... and on down the list. www.globalresearch.ca/how-monsanto-invaded-occupied-and-now-controls-government-regulators/5535501 oxalic acid in human body and such: oxalicacidinfo.com/ I agree with you on the sugar wash.. why kill any bees? The idea is to promote colony health.. the more you kill.. the less there is. :) Interesting... packaged bees coming in with Verroa... makes sense though considering their pervasiveness. The clipped wing queen is a great way to capture swarms easier in theory eh? Thanks Fred! Another excellent video! I am a long ways from "fancy" bee hives... haha! But I love yours.. beautiful!
