Beginning with honey bees Frequently Asked Questions Episode 14!
Let's talk! Yes, please write your own questions in the comments section, I read them all and will respond to those I feel will have broad appeal to those beginning with honey bees.
Discussion points in this video presentation are in order:
1) What do you do to wash bee suits and gloves?
2) How long do Weaver Queen Bees live?
3) What's the cheapest way to get honey and wax from a beehive?
4) Deep Brood Box and Medium Supers - if the bees go up during winter, how do you get them to go back down in the spring?
5) How common is it for a colony to go "queenless" and why does that happen?
6) Once you remove Flow-Supers for winter, how do you clean them?

Yes, the uncapping fork video was stellar! works like a charm and gets into those "oddball spots". Per our commentary discussion on that video... spinning is a looooooooooong process.. :) good info on the queen excluder and the potential to leave the queen behind. Thanks for all the testing you do (flow frames etc) and all the info! I know it takes a lot of time to organize these excellent videos!

Thanks for continuing these q&a series. I'm so new and trying to learn but not even knowing enough to ask the right questions. My most often question that comes to mind is why different beekeepers do something particular. Most seem to do it because that's they way they were taught. I pay particular attention to the ones who have tested and researched different methods. I do appreciate your time spent researching the topics covered.

Great stuff Mr. Dunn; My first thought with the "uncapping fork/planer" is a person could actually jar honey frame by frame and see/taste the different honey stores (similar to flow hive).
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
My thoughts exactly Ken! So nice to be able to scrape off a couple of the frames and not do a full scale honey-day. Indeed, much like the Flow-Frames where the individual frame honey character is not blended. Lots of fun.

I had gone to the refrigerator when I heard my name called out from the TV because this video was playing. A bit weird but I liked it. I'm the guy that asked the question about how common it was for a colony to lose its queen. I've been watching bee videos for a few weeks and I got to wondering what breaks the chain where the workers just create a new queen when the old one dies. Frederick's answer that he posted where I left the question was that one of the problems was that the queen has to be mated and if she goes out at the wrong time of the year she might not find a drone. That answer led to a bunch of new questions about this issue like:: What happens to colonies in the wild that lose a queen and don't succeed in getting a new mated queen? Do the bees just slowly die? Do they ever get a new queen from a different colony? Maybe the workers try to join another colony? Is natural requeening much more likely in a Southern California type climate than in a climate with snow and sub freezing temperatures? Anyway thanks to Frederick for the videos and the answer. As an aside, I went to Frederick's website to see if he might have a link to a bee natural history type book. I didn't see one. Linking to some bee books might be a good idea on his web site.

I ordered my Guardian Bee Jacket last year. I have never worn it as I've had bees that seem to be more preoccupied with the hive than having interest in me. I have worn a veil and hat on a few occasions. I also bought those nice goatskin gloves that sit at the bottom of my be bucket in the original plastic. did buy some 5mil and 8mil gloves from Amazon that have saved my hands when I have worked my bees with not so gentle motion.

Off topic from your OA vaporization video; We chose the "fogger" method with OA and Grain Alcohol on the flow hive 2 (packaged bees) we were able (from the rear vent) to position the nozzle below the screen and above the tray without messing with the front entrance. And shocked on the number of dead mites on the tray a week later (poor bees). I think with the use of a "Slatted Rack", will move the wax and bees away from the heat in either method.
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
Wow, sounds like you needed to do that treatment and I'm glad you were able to knock the varroa down. Yes, the slatted rack should help create a protective barrier - a definite plus.

You seem to be a kindred heart....love your philosophy, style and especially your video. HI Ron, thanks so much, I'm originally from Kirkwood! As for your drunken bees, I'd need more information - do they eventually get into the hive, or are they landing in the grass in front of the hive body and not making it back up and in?

Tide free and gentle is great. It gets everything out. I use it for my paintball gear as well. After a match it gets all the fish oils and paint out from when I get hit, to the mud, to everything. Paintball gear has a delicate mesh inside as well as padding. And it is washed exactly like a bee suit really. You gentle cycle it and then air dry it. My gear has lasted years and it looks good as new. Also you turn the items inside out when washing.

Thanks for going the extra mile to find out how to wash my suit. I’ll be looking forward to the video on how to wash and condition the leather gloves. After my final fall inspection and pack down, I washed the suits with the free and clear Tide. The wash took out the dirt and smoke stains, but propolis stains remain. Getting sparkling white was not the most important part. I wanted to make sure that I was eliminating any disease and smelly sweat while not compromising the integrity of the suit. I’ll have to wait until spring to field test, but the suit seems still intact. Thanks again! I washed about a month ago so sorry for the slow follow up.

@@FrederickDunn So sorry to hear this, I am blessed to live in North Central Washington on the Columbia River. We can have some cold winters, but by mid-April we are on our way to Spring. When that last blast of winter came through last week it dropped temps into the 50's during the days and 30's at night but my bees still went out every day and were collecting nectar and pollen. At 34 degrees you would need to have those Siberian bees to make any headway. I hope the Sun begins to shine on your home soon and for many days to come.

In Western Australia here, just started beekeeping, placed a wild hive that was formed in a small shrub like tree into a brood box with no frames in it. The hive had branches through it, so I cut the hive out of the shrub, branches included and just placed it into the base brood box and then placed an 8 frame super on top with 8 deep foundation frames. I have placed a top feeder on( the exact blue one in your background) and fed them bee syrup, they have now moved up into the frames and she is laying and making brood in a 6 inch circle. We have 6 weeks till winter, I hope they make it. I will probably need some advice come spring about how to remove the mess in the bottom box and get the frames from the super down into the base brood box again. I have done a one day introduction course to beekeeping. I have just started my journey but I will be travelling along with you from here.😀👍🐝

Hey John, thanks, I hope the hive survives, it's not super cold here over winter, I'm inland 20kms from the coast at Cannington. This is a sort of "baptism of fire" for me, starting with a wild hive in a frameless brood box with a 8 frame super on top, it's all good, I just want the bees to win, because they always form swarm hives in trees in this spot, so might as well give them a home.👍

I was recently given Hoya cuttings. When i get extra i will send you some. It is a relative to asclepias tuberosa but Hoya is a vining plant. It produces both NectarAND pollen for the bees as wellas the MONARCH butterfly. Thank you for the time you have spent conversing with me from time to time. Plant, cuttings and or rooted plants i have are available to you AT NO COST. They are free to me so are free to you. If you have a po box i will send you rooted bee friendly plants from time to time. Thank you for the awesome advice. Your years of keeping have benefitted me and my family. from this day forward you get a link in the description of my video in addition to a shout out not because i do not want anything from you but due to your knowledge of bees. it helps me tremendously and in appreciation you get the link in video creation. My unique position grants me access to hard to find plants that may be difficult for you to find without paying expensive shipping fees. i am in southern Al so my growing season is long. The enemy of my enemy is not my friend but a diversion for my enemy, so i can conquer them both. The bell tolls for thee. It sounds as nectar and pollen. Please tell, what is the temp at which the bees migrate to the top? Most of my questions were designed to test you. You have more than earned my trust. i believe you to be a Man of your Word. a man is only worth that and your value is proven to be of highest character. i have zero concern about having bees and a viable queen. At the foot of my fathers gravesite is a wild hive in a tree. my fathers grave reads; Hope Springs Eternal. Take from that what you will. This wild hive has been there for many, many years. Even after swarm the population of this hive is above 25,000. I have watched itand know it to be true.Hope Sir, Does Spring Eternal.it is Designed this way.

We want the full super to be close to the brood box so they can get at the resources easier. If we put the new super under the full one, they also may start to put brood in that box instead of honey, or mix both. Thanks for the nice compliment! :)

I have a feeding solids question: What are the advantages/disadvantages of fondant vs. Pure Cane Sugar for winter feeding in the shim? P.S. I got you on your rankings, Mr. Dunn. I work alone so I get to have your playlist on all day Monday-Friday, and every time I re-watch something else sinks in & sticks in the ol' noggin!
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
Hi Wendy! I have a confession that I've never used Fondant in any of my hives and when I do need to boost a late swarm or new colony, pure cane sugar is all I've used. Why? Well, because I don't have to do any kitchen "work" when providing the cane sugar and the dry sugar will also absorb some of the hive moisture and become a solidified mound that the honeybees just drill right into. Most of my wintering colonies are on stored honey and the dry sugar is just secondary insurance. There are lots of discussions regarding heating sugars and how their properties are potentially altered if heated too high, or for too long. I think it's such a wonderful compliment that you are listening to my videos during your work day! Thank you Wendy - energy wise, there is no real advantage to fondant over cane sugars in my opinion.

Thank you, Mr. Dunn! Great info as always! I know some people will put 1 or even 2 fewer frames in a honey super making honey harvest easier. I’ve also heard people removing one frame from a brood box after they are all drawn out, making it easier to work and maybe to prevent rolling the queen. What is your opinion on this? Also, I also have a slatted bottom, so would this work with a slatted bottom since the fewer number frames would not line up with the slats? Thanks again
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
Hi Mandy, these are great questions and I'm going to add them to FAQ 15 frame spacing is very important and how to work the frames is something I really should demonstrate. The slatted rack "ideally" should line up with your frames, but that's not critical and the bees should work around that just fine. I know that varroa dropping down straight through the frames is an advantage if there is also a screen bottom board. Thank you so much!!!

Sorry if this has been asked before, but how do you strain/filter honey?
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
How do I do it? I personally don't filter the honey. I take honey off through Flow-Frames so there is no filtering there and no straining. These days, the closest I come to filtering is when I run uncapping wax through my solar strainer and that's just a kitchen veggie stainless steel strainer screen. No bee parts, nothing but honey and tiny bits of wax or propolis. There are many gradients of filters for honey on the market. I will explain this in my FAQ 15. Thanks for asking Grayson!

Since you use the round plastic feeders, I'm guessing you have experienced mold inside the feeders. Using 1:1 syrup, I have this problem, regardless of which type of plastic feeder I use. I add an essential oil mix as well as a little bit of bleach to my syrup and still have trouble. Have you found any solutions? Thanks!
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
I don't leave the syrup on long enough for it to spoil. When I go out to replace it, I have a clean feeder with me, I pull the other one out and put a clean fresh one in. If you just go and refill the feeder without taking it out and cleaning it, mold shows up faster.

How about a frame of better comb in a swarm trap? Along with 2 or 3 acorn heavy waxed frame and foundations and one foundation-less frame in a swarm trap? Orientation would be foundation-less first after entrance then the better comb then the 2 acron frames it’s big enough to fit 5 frames but only using 4 could add if u think I should
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 4 года назад
I would save the BetterComb for after you've collected your swarm. It's too expensive (in my opinion) to risk in a trap that may yeild nothing at all. BUT, if you do snag a swarm, they yes absolutely use it in the installation box so they can build up fast. I highly recommend using older comb, or cheaper comb in your trap systems. Don't forget to use Swarm Commander :)

Is it true plastic disposal gloves can’t prevent bees from stinging your hands? I heard people say this, but I don’t know. I have stung through leather gloves. Haven’t found a glove, that bee couldn’t sting though, especially when you make a fist or pick up the smoker and they you on the back of the hand

Hi I use the same type of gloves that Mr. Dunn does they are great they can sting though the gloves but, it is harder for them, what happens is u can feel the bee trying, U kill less bees when u work the hive as well because u can feel them as u work . The big thick bee gloves u cant feel bees and u kill a lot and they let off a smell and the bees smell that any way they are great. I use 7 mil from Harbor freight very seldom do I get stung on my hands I will use this type of glove as long as I keep playing with my bees.

I use dishwashing gloves from Wally World. I can still feel the vibrations of the bees. I've seen them sting the glove a couple of times, but they didn't get me. When this happens, I crush grass/weeds and rub it on the area to mask the pheromone, and when I go inside, I wash my hands with the gloves on. The bees seem to not mind the color of the gloves. When I started using the dishwashing gloves, I was amazed at how gentle my bees became, it was a pleasure going into the hives. When I had the leather gloves, everytime I went into the hive, they would attack me. The leather gloves had attack pheromone on them, I threw them away. Also, use your smoker, I fell for the "spray them with sugar water crap", that's how my gloves got the attack pheromone on them.

Yes, the bees can sting through the nitrile gloves but since they don't recognize it as an extension of a living mammal, they are less likely to attempt a sting. The gloves give great dexterity and of course, instantly clean hands upon removal. :)

2 quick questions if you have a minute. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Vm2bgzJw8C8-.html this link is to a video that claims burning your wooden swarm boxes, and by extension your regular hive boxes, attracts bees for swarm traps and makes it easier for bee swarms to settle into boxes after being trapped/vacuumed since it is more like home. The claim is that trees struck by lighting or burnt in fires are ore attractive to bees. What are your thoughts? Secondly would it make sense to burn the inside of even older boxes to sterilize them? Look forward to your insight.
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
I'm personally not a fan of burning the interior of boxes and am a little skeptical that bees would move into a burned tree (lightning or otherwise) over a tree that wasn't burned and presented a suitable cavity. There is a lecture series where the downside of burning is discussed and I will link that if I can find it. Since swarm boxes do well on their own and we depend on the lures and scents, I think that burnt wood smell would actually deter rather than detract. You can put both out and see which attracts swarms first.

Hi Fred Do you have any information or experience with the knock offs of the flow hive? I am old and on a fixed income and see knock offs a lot cheaper on Amazon. Any information in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks From NC

I just don't trust the plastics they are using in them. I could not get any company to provide material verification. I don't trust companies that won't answer questions, but then what did I expect when they are already violating patents.

Hello Mr. Dunn, I wanted to ask you about scouting bee behavior. I just set up a swarm trap in front of my place. I don’t have any of my bees where I live. But I see a few 10-20 bees checking out my swarm box. Some bees just walk around the entrance and others just go straight in and out, some I even saw fighting and tumbled to the ground, I even had a couple bees buzzing around my head, trying to scare me off. I don’t believe they moved in yet. But at the same time, I don’t understand why they seem to be fighting over an empty box. I was wondering if you might have any ideas of what is going on with these bees?
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
Hi Craig, all of that behavior is GREAT news! This means that there are scouts from two colonies that are each trying to stake-out your swarm trap. They are sort of like holding a seat for their friends on the bus. They will guard it and others will continue to try to inspect the space. It's a great sign. If one colony doesn't swarm to it, then you have a backup group that may get there. Also, because there are competing scouts, when you do get a swarm, it's important to have another trap ready to install so you won't miss the second group :) Keep us posted!

Frederick Dunn I’m currently watching my second box this morning, it’s smaller 3 frames box. There around 30-50 bees flying around it this morning, still some fighting. But what impresses me the most is that I am watching the bees pulling out dirt and junk out of the box and dropping it off the landing board. I got a feeling they will be moving in a few hours. That would be nuts, two swarms in two days

I was going to make a spit there were several queens sells That started hatching out while I was looking at the frames. I have no interest in investigating the fake flowhives as the companies that are presenting them for sale, offer no evidence regarding the composition of the plastic frames and I just can't trust someone capable of patent violations to begin with. Hello Mr. Fred i am from Georgia but in Germany with the military, i am about to get bees for the first time because i found someone who has too many hives and wants to get rid of one or 2, everything i know about bees is just from youtube, do you know anything about Zander hives, its a different kind of bee box other than langstroth. Thats what the Germans use. Do you think I should stay with the zander hive boxes and frames or try to move the bees into langstroth boxes? The bees will be carnica bees.
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
Hi Daniel, I don't have personal experience with the Zander hives, but you can't go wrong with the Langstroth boxes as there is a wide array of associated equipment that will be compatible. Most manufacturers are sizing their gear for the 8 or 10 frame Langstroth boxes.
@danieltaylor8113
@danieltaylor8113 5 лет назад
@@FrederickDunn hello Mr. Fred, i know langstroth is what i want and what is widely popular but my issue comes with these Zander boxes being widely popular here in germany (and pretty much only in germany from what i can tell) and the only bees i have found for sell are bees that overwintered in the Zander boxes, everyone i contacted for packages at the beginning of the month was sold out. Since the bees are already set up in these boxes, and i have to pay for the boxes with the bees (thats the offer i was given) should i leave them in the zander boxes? I am not sure i could get the bees off the zander frames and onto the langstroth frames. Langstroth is what i want but they already have brood and drawn out wax in the zander boxes. I seem stuck between what i want (and what i did my research based on) and what i actually have available to purchase

@@danieltaylor8113 Your beekeeping practices are going to be the same no matter if you're using the Zander boxes or Langstroth, what's the dimensional difference between the actual frames?
@danieltaylor8113
@danieltaylor8113 5 лет назад
@@FrederickDunn hello mr. Fred the dimensions of each zander frame is Upper support: 477 x 22 x 10 mm Outside dimensions: 420 x 220 mm Wood thickness: 10 mm I believe we would care about the 420×220 dimension plus the ears on top that hold the frame up making the length of the frame and ears 477mm. Everyone i have talked to so far in Germany says zander boxes are smaller that langstroth deeps. The zander is still 10 frames and bee space. I have to fight my base to let me keep my bees because some people in mid to high level postions in the housing department are scared my poor little bees will kill everyone in housing.... even though i see bees everyday without my hive being there. I actually bought a hive today! I have to keep it was the bee club's apiary until i can beat housing.

@@FrederickDunn my bees have 2 brood boxes full already and bercomb building on the top which my understanding means they need a third box. Hi Fred, I have a question that is not related FAQ 13. Why people use medium super or shallow? Why not use deep? Any advantage using multiple medium super over single deep super? Some people don't understand using shallow or medium super because it is time & labor -consuming due to "uncapping processes" need to be done more frequently to get honey? Thanks in advance ~ always grateful, Fred ~

It really comes down the the ability to lift the boxes with frames in them. Many people just can't lift a deep. That's how the medium and even shallow supers came about.

@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
@@younginsong4355 Yes, they live off of honey during winter as their survival energy source. Once they cluster over brood, they consume the honey immediate to their location until the weather breaks which allows them to move around the hive and access more. In my colonies, they generally don't finish using the top frames of honey.
