Yay been waiting for this video all week. And it is kinda exactly what I am doing this week. Fred man. My one Beeweaver has tried to swarm twice, and my other tried today. So I am splitting the first year beeweaver nucs and putting saskatraz queens on them. I have never had a nuc that needed splitting first year. I just don't understand. I swear these things are laying 3000 eggs per day. They each fully drew out 20 frames of comb in a month and a half. I have never had to do this. It makes no sense. Why cant you guys be like regular bees and be slower? lol.

Wow, Carlos, thanks for sharing your experience! I have a Bee Weaver Queen arriving this week, and I had her clipped & marked, because I'm in a city and have to prevent swarming. It sounds like I will have to be on top of hive expansion much more astutely than my Caucasian & my Saskatraz hive...

Once again, outstanding video Fred!! I have a Queen coming from BeeWeaver on Tuesday or Wednesday? I have a Queenless hive, and I am going to try and introduce her to the hive using your method! I cannot understand how and why so many of the “Pro” beekeepers work in shirtsleeves and flip flops with no vail?? One will watch a video and you know they are getting stung! There are times when I do certain evolutions with a t-shirt on and that's ok for me to take a risk, but I'm very careful to share how important protective clothing can be and certainly don't want keepers to think it's a sign or a novice vs experienced beekeeper. It's always personal preference as to how much risk people want to accept. If I'm pulling brood, I'm wearing a suit :)

@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
Open again in about 3 days to make sure the Queen is released and remove the empty queen cage. Then stay out of the hive - hopefully you have a hive top feeder so you can service that without opening the main space. Leave them alone and observe the landing board activity. IN around 3.5 weeks, you should begin to see a built up and you can then open to check for brood health. The fewer visits you have, the better they will do.

Another great video full of very helpful information. As a brand new beekeeper I am fascinated by the behavior of my bees. One of my observations is that my bees will build comb almost completely filling the center access to the ceracell top feeders and this makes it harder getting the bees out of that area when cleaning the feeders. Why would they do this?
@FrederickDunn

I have heard about the hybrid sunflowers having less pollen but how can a person tell the difference. The seed sellers use different terms and gimmicks just like car sellers. Some reviews sound like Mary Poppins wrote them! Even some of the native seed companies ads sound iffy.
@weasleoop
@weasleoop 5 лет назад
Usually if you get seeds that are marked Heirloom seeds, eg seeds that have been a designated line for many years, even some back to the 1800s, you are more inclined to get seeds that are not messed with. Not a plug in any way but I order a lot of my flower seeds from Baker Creek. I am growing some beans that were grown by the Pueblo Indians and some seeds that are from the same lines that were found in some Egyptian Tombs. The seeds tell a story and have a source and are not modified.
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
Eden Brothers seed company is very transparent regarding pollen loading or pollen free etc... Side Note, "Organic Seed Company" is actually owned by Monsanto and even though they have that "title" the seeds are modified and patented as they consider it a Company "name" not a seed identifier. It's a very clever legal game being played on consumers.

Fred, Thanks for another great Friday Evening. I hope you can answer this question: Since Virgin Queens typically fly up to three times the distance that Drones from the same apiary fly, how do they know where the Drone Congregation Areas are and how do they insure that they are mating with Drones from diverse genetic hives.
@weasleoop
@weasleoop 5 лет назад
The drones really kinda wait around for a queen and can pick up her pheromone while she is in flight with their antennae. It can detect an available queen up to like 200 feet away. So its not so much a queen looking for them, its her flying around and attracting attention from near by drones. They are looking for her.

Hi Glen, knowing where those DCA's are is a point of study and it seems the areas are fairly constant through the years. AS Carlos mentioned, one of the studies involved putting a queen in a netted cage and floating her high in the air with a helium balloon. Wherever she soon became a drone congregation area as she was surrounded by drones in flight. It seems that queens get attention wherever they fly and drones are very good at spotting them. As for genetic rejection, Queens don't make the choice, it's the drones that reject the mating opportunity if the genetics are too close to their own. It's a fun area of study and Cornell is deep in it.

My one Beeweaver is SUPER hot, worse disposition than Russians, worse disposition of any hive I have ever had. Like I cannot even mow outside without getting buzzed, and they chase me down my driveway. To put things in perspective my driveway is 2 miles long. And another mile from the hives. The guard bees chase me a mile down my driveway before they turn back. They are doing amazing building up and acting normal as anything else, but as soon as it got warmer out they are so pissy. I had to suit up for it, when usually I am just in a veil. They are fine initially but once they get mad they get MAD MAD MAD. I am already looking forward to requeening her I think if her brood does not calm down. I am like did she get some Africanized drones mating with her in Texas? The other two Beeweavers are amazing and gentle. But this hive is like, I HATE YOU DIE NOW. I got stung in the cheek today before I left work just walking out to my car. My car is easily, 500 feet from the hives. While I was dealing with getting stung there and getting to leave again, I got smacked in the center of the head and almost was stung in the forehead. Once they get on you, you have to either go a mile down the driveway or go in the house before they leave you alone and sometimes they wait for you at the front door for you to come back out of the house. Freaking mean colony. I really hope she calms down because I just got this queen in April. I wrote Beeweaver and maybe will call them on Monday. They have a four month replacement window on queens that are making super aggressive hives. Hopefully I can get a replacement. I hope they understand. I got pets and my kids are even being stung now and they are no where near the hives. Another thing that is strange is, my one beeweaver queen looks like a fat long normal queen. My other two beeweaver queens look tiny. Like drones are way larger. I am like are these mated? They are laying so many eggs so I know they are. They just look super tiny. The smallest one is my best layer of any of the hives.
@hadrast
@hadrast 5 лет назад
Chasing you over a mile sounds like a huge red flag; I think it's time to break out the garbage bags and apply the Africanized bee treatment. I wouldn't want those genes getting around even if they're not actually Africanized. If BeeWeaver sends you a replacement queen you can split off some workers and resources from your other hives (a few days in advance) to restart things.
@weasleoop
@weasleoop 5 лет назад
@@hadrast Yeah it is starting to get a little concerning. Smoke does not calm them down. My wife got stung 10 times just slowly opening the inner cover. I got stung 5 times doing so before and had warned her about it. Then they send up like 40 guard bees constantly bouncing off your veil like you kicked the hive over. If you get within 30 feet of the hive you are getting stung. Period. I put up warning signs in case the delivery guys or someone might be allergic and I am concerned for my chickens and pets now. That hive started off so nice but as the queens brood hatched thier total attitude has changed. It is like they have guard bees flying around the yard and are just wanting to sting you even when its a nice sunny day and you havent even messed with the hive and there are resources to bring in.

Wow, what a difference that visor makes on the temperature of that Flow Hive 2 under a full sun! One hundred and twenty degrees on top off the visor and one hundred eighty one to one hundred eighty four degrees at the entrance. That's over thirty five degree difference- by my calculations. I'll bet the bees appreciate not having their appendages baked as they move in and out of their hive. But my question is what role or purpose does burr comb have ? My initial thoughts were that it serves much like a staircase, providing a more direct means of moving from one level to another, or as a means of directing airflow within the hive, or a move efficient way of joining structure together without the use of propyliss. I am very much interested on your thought on this. Thank you for your contribution to beekeeping and beekeepers.

Best way to find a drone congregation area is to look for dead drones on the ground. They fly up to the queen and get tired and die from mating. Hi Fred, I just checked my hive and I found that many of the normal brood cells are full of nectar. I did not see a single egg in any cell so assuming queen is gone. There were capped queen cells on four frames. I split the hive and put half of the queen cells in either hive. The new hive I gave a frame full of brood and left one for the old hive. The new hive i gave a frame of new wax that had a few cells of honey. Both hives have a lot of pollen and honey. The scotch broom flow is on here. My idea is that the two hives will have queens hatch soon and she will start laying eggs in a couple of weeks. I split the hive due to the queen cells and that the hive swarmed a few weeks ago and have built up again. Any thoughts

It's greatly appreciated:) I'm curious as to which flavor of Essential oil you would recommend? Also, what would you suggest... if one's approach was to support pollinators but not specifically working the hives for honey, what would you consider the average managed hive size. And lastly; Hybridized plants, flowering this & flowering that. The botanical mules, do pollinators know these plants provide nothing before they even get there? For example... a plant that requires pollinators in order to reproduce usually broadcasts that fact somehow. Perhaps "Ultravioletly"... as for the mules... do they not broad cast? This way the pollinators aren't duped! Your thoughts? Bye the way, that awning is lacking the "Fred Dunn" touch;);):)
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
Hi Sean, hive size will really be dictated by the bees themselves as their population rises and falls. If you let them get "loaded" and don't expand the hive, they will swarm out and reduce numbers on their own. It's up to you as to how large you'd like them to get before swarming out. Yep, I need to do some work on those hive-visors ;) The bees know what plants are putting out once they visit. If the result isn't good, they simply don't turn other foragers on to that plant and the search for floral goodness continues.

If the bees are only attacking one person and not other people, it could be that he is wearing a fragrance, cologne, after shave or something. I made the mistake once by checking my hive when I was wearing cologne and man, my normal gentle bees became very aggressive. So now on I never go near my hives, if I am wearing cologne

You don't have to remove the entrance reducer unless you see the bees congested as they try to go in and out. It can be left in place, particularly for smaller colonies.

Hi Fred! First off - thanks for your videos :) You've helped me prepare for becoming a beekeeper and now I have bees! Secondly - I want to mount a camera near my hive just so I can livestream the hive entrance to myself for fun and cause I'm a nerd. Since you do photography, I thought you might have a camera you would recommend. Application requirements include: IP65 or better weather resistance 1080p FHD or better resolution (I'd love 4k/UHD/8+mp but that may not be available yet) 30+ FPS (someone recommended getting something that can do slow motion just to enjoy watching bees bang their heads against the hive body) Ethernet or WiFi connectivity I've found some cool cameras, but most of them are "security" type and have really low framerates ~15fps. Others are hunting cameras that I'm not sure have the network connectivity that I'm looking for. Do you have any recommendations for cameras for someone looking to set up a bee hive live stream?
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
Because you're asking for a live feed that you can watch remotely, I suggest the nest box cameras that wild bird enthusiasts use. They are hard-wired for power and of course the network. Some are very good. They are designed to be very close to the subject, so have an advantage over 99% of the game cameras which use sim cards. Here's an example ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1MVdx4BJyQ0.html

Recently discovered your site and am avidly going through back postings. Question... would it be possible for a "snow bird"...that is a person who spends part of the year at the proposed Hive location...to keep bees? I expect to be in Michigan from mid May to mid December each year and would love to attempt keeping bees. Would propose leaving large honey surplus plus dry sugar in December but worry that return in spring would be too late. If possible...reducer or no?

OK...what is missing here? I think the slip itself. I have a friend who is thinking of starting beekeeping. He had no idea what was meant by a split. So I looked up videos on the subject to share with him. His comment was that your video showed the before and the after of the split but not the actual split. So these were his questions. (1) How many frames do you take from the old box to give to the new box. Do you take them all and just decide the number of frames and give each a half? 2) what needs to be on the frame as far as resources, if any? 3) if it’s half and half, then you take out five frames out of a ten frame box and put them in another ten frame box and what do you fill the empty spaces with? It would have also been nice to see a frame with a nice brood pattern and resources around it of pollen and honey. I had to look up three other videos to show and explain the above. It is very nice to see a frame holder but when you are expecting to learn about a split, I think it is rather annoying. Usually you are so good at explaining things from A to Z. In this case I think it fell short. May I suggest a video on the actual split. Thank you.
@FrederickDunn

At 38:00 the receiving box has six frames in place with nectar and comb resources (10 frame box)... installing 4 frames of brood with queen cells, eggs, or 24 hr young brood is enough to start the new colony. sorry I didn't make that more clear. If there were just 8 frames of brood in the parent colony, removing four or even five frames of brood would also be fine as the parent/original colony will have the fastest recovery. With Queen cells on several frames, I leave some in both hives. In the original hive, I push the frames towards the center and install new frames in positions 1,2,9,10 to replace the brood removed. Keep the brood frames together. Thanks for asking Suzanne.

You can "bank" queens, but I haven't had any problems, so I don't practice that. Whenever you contain the queen, you stop the colony from swarming, and when there is the pheromone of a mated queen in the hive, it can impede replacement queen production.

Lots of advantages of a marked queen that I hadn't thought of! Excellent insight as always Fred! Excellent "sting advice". On the hybrid vs heritage... I understand a bee will only visit a flower if it's 7 brix or higher. You'd have to have brix readings of each "set" to even study that. Additionally, the health of the plants and soil is a much higher impact on this (plant sugar in sap). Yep.. GMO varieties, all genetics issues aside, are either producing pesticide or being sprayed directly. I could go on all day about the hazards of pesticides, herbicides and fungicides. Honey from failed hives can carry disease. The key is to leave enough honey to get your bees through winter without taking too much off. If you're splitting, or starting a new colony, straight sugar water is the best energy boost that also helps them with comb construction. I generally never have to supplemental feed established colonies, it's just the starters.

Hello, here in Europe (or at least in my country) we don't have Honey B healty and other products. What essencial oil mix would you recommend for extending "shelf life" of sugar syrup?
@weasleoop
@weasleoop 5 лет назад
Its usually lemongrass oil and spearmint. Make sure its food grade and not for aroma. Although it extends the sugar syrups life, it makes the sugar smell even more and you will have more bees drinking more of it and more often. Usually you would want to do this in the fall to build up their stores quicker, or fight Nosema or get them to drink treatments or additions to the syrup. I usually open feed as I do not like ants in the hive. As long as you keep it at least 70 feet from your apiary *rough number I use" You wont have to deal with a robbing situation. Usually they will drain the syrup so fast that it will not get black mold or spoil before its empty.

Hi Daniel, many of the treatments such as quick strips, require a set temperature range to be effective. I find Oxalic Acid Vaporization to be the most effective across all temps and the least invasive for the bees - any treatment that must be inserted, must also be removed - efficacy is just as good or even better with vaporization. I recommend just treating before you put your honey supers on, and then again after you've harvested if there are high varroa counts.

Hi Larry! Ok, my box stacking methodology is very complex and nuanced... I just add whatever whenever regarding the depth of boxes. My only rule is that the bottom box be a deep, after that, I'm apt to grab whatever is handy and ready to use. In a perfectly organized hive, I'd use two deeps, then all medium supers after that.
