There is a difference between how you think about chord progressions if you are a beginner and if you are more experienced, and that is something that is probably holding you back and making your solos sound like unconnected fragments instead of a real piece of music.
In this video, I am going to talk about how to fix that!

When I first started playing, and got to the point where I wanted to 'show off' my skills, someone said to me, 'Oh, you play like Joe Pass.' So I said (to myself) 'ok, um fine...who's Joe Pass?' So I went out and got his book to see if I really did play like him. Turns out, no I don't, but at least I got his book.

Jens, this is EXACTLY where I'm at w/ guitar. I had realized that I can roll through a scale in different modes as the chords change...however there is a tremendous amount of mental gymnastics that is hard to apply in practice, at tempo. The result is disconnected lines, exactly as you describe. Thank you for the video, the idea of soloing from a different (and already seemingly easier) perspective or thinking one step ahead and knowing where I want to land is helping me. Still much to learn and practice with this approach but I notice a better melodic quality to my shitty playing.

It has been suggested by other instructors that when one goes to learn a tune, it is useful to memories the chart/progression and be able to recite it before you play the piece or at least as a major part of the process of learning the changes. Reciting verbally the changes internalizes the chords in your brain so you are not struggling to interpret the tonal qualities coming up in the next chord when soloing on your instrument.

Some comments: First of all, the work done in your videos is amazing. The lesson scheme, dynamics and graphic effects combined are really something. Also i want to thank you for sharing all your expertise to the world wide jazz guitar players community (writing from argentina). Right now I'm stuck on how to play over a chord progression. The problem is that scales are not flowing through my veins. So, I can't think of connecting chords without having practiced scales on each one previously (and that is exactly that you dont recommend to do). It's kind of a paradox. What should i do? Thanks for all! Really appreciate your hard work!

Thank you so much Jens for again a very valuable and clearly explained lesson! Now in order to practice the "think ahead, lock on your next target note and guide your phrase to that note" routine, would it be possible to recommend some less complex songs that are in reach of a classic and reasonably proficient (Bb brass) musician, but an absolute novice in jazz improvisation? Such guidance would be really appreciated. Thanks!

I'm learning to play Nature Boy by ear, no chords. I find that I can segue into Buddy Can You Spare A Dime (also single notes) and you can't even notice the transition. It's fun, of course, but it also opens up notes for soloing you may not have thought of. And of course it works both ways. I see nothing wrong with a harmonic solo that is melodic at the same time.

Thanks Jens for the lesson. Wonderful and very helpful, thanks. I listened a few times and tried to read some of the comments but couldn't find an answer and figured I'd ask: most of the target notes you show at about the 4:15 mark are chord tones except for the Ab on the G7 (a flat 9th) and the Db on the F7 (a #5/b6), is this a way in which you are trying to bring out the altered chord tones in the solo or are your targeting passing notes because they are close to the next chords chord tones? Or is there some particular reason why you chose the target notes that you did? Sorry for my inability to really articulate the question well and thanks again for these helpful videos.
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 2 года назад
A target note has to be clear in the context and sound like the chord, and the Ab (b9) on the G7 is a very distinct and clear sound in the context of Bb major similar to how a b13 is very much a clear sound for an F7alt. I guess if you play the lines slowly and pause on the target note you should be able to hear that the chord is changing. hope that helps explain it :)

Just from a different perspective- does one think the father of modern jazz guitar- thought “ where should put a Dorian or Lydian scale “ during solo flight. ? Different strokes ... in my mind time spent finding what you hear is at least as important. The scales will have to just go and figure out how to make sense of what sounds pretty.
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 3 года назад
I doubt that Charlie Christian was thinking in modes :D But, being aware of scales does not exclude playing what you hear, in fact it helps most people to do so. That is about how you work with it. First off, thanks for the lesson! I'm bad at theory and I have a question: Are the often played lines of John Scofield and Allan Holdsworth considered diminished lines? Conventional jazz playing is relatively easy to receive, because you can clearly hear a prudent soloist weaving their lines with the changes/modes. However, with the two guys I mentioned earlier, among many others like Pharaoh Sanders, they play what sounds like consistent diminished sounds, constantly tensing and resolving over and over. Now, most soloists use dissonance in nearly all of their lines, but particular players have a way of making that fictitious, retrofuturistic computer sound that I actually like to hear a lot.

@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 3 года назад
@@christiankraut6554 That's fair even if it is now 33K - 2 :) I try to make videos that most people appreciate (which on YT means click and watch long), and "over-production" has not been bad in that regard. The older videos can not compete with that at all. I try other formats as well once in a while to test, but it is usually pretty clear. If I didn't, then you would never have found my videos in the first place. Two people mentioning background music in a few weeks come close to something I can write off as bad laptop speakers, language problems, general level of the people watching and other stuff like that. Things I can't really do anything about anyway. It's a little like the jump-cuts: Some people find that annoying and complain, but if retention on the video is up 20-30% then all the other people who didn't complain but just watched longer also gave their opinion. This video is a good example of that.

I'm not sure to understand why we would play a Db on the F7 chord.. isn't this F7 the V7 of Bb major? Why would the 6 of F be minor?

Oh, these Jazzers: Theory on theory about everything. Analyses of music destroy music. Don‘t think about the next note, rather listen to your heart. If the note you hear there doesn‘t fit, it is the wrong piece. That‘s how you develop your own music. Forget about styles.

Do you mean "Analysis of music destroys music" or are you developing you own language as well as your own music?

Harry, analysis is descriptive, not prescriptive. What you call "listening to your heart" is following an impulse and following through on it using internalized knowledge. If I'm soloing, and I play what would be say, a minor 6th from the preceding note, I don' think "next, I will play a b6 interval from the current note", I just play it - because years of study and work make the impulse, and the playing of it, shorter than the actual thought process. That's why people practice and study...

@Jens Larsen Analyses is the plural of analysis. And that‘s not what I commented on. Look for a typo to talk about something else.

@Marwin Moody I know what you are talking about because I went through it. I now regard it as a loss of time.

@@HarryGuit You clearly have no idea about how knowing music theory influences your playing or how it can help you make music with other people in Jazz. Your problem is that you think music theory is a set of rules that stops you from playing something, or forces you to play something else, when it is actually a way to describe how the notes you play sound. Go check out that interview with David Gilmour where he talks about how playing changes and following chords is a huge help and a basic part of making music.
