I’m 19 from Canada learning to crochet and this was SO helpful. I’m crocheting a simple sweater with just double crochets but tried being ~fancy~ by adding stripes but I used a 4 with like.. literally a 1 so it was super skinny at the 1 part LOL. I’m still going to finish the sweater lol it can be a look but thank you this was so helpful for my future attempts :)

I’ve been crocheting for years and I just never took the time to learn anything about yarn weight and I only pick yarn weight by feeling since I never shop for yarn online. Since the weight system is so inaccurate and is different for each yarn, I don’t really trust it at all. Experience is key for me, but thank you for explaining this so I can understand yarn reviews a bit better.

In Britain the traditional weights were, 1 ply - used for lace, Shetland ring shawls etc, 3,ply used for fine babies knits, 4ply used for socks and fine ladies and children's cardigans and jumpers. D.k. double knitting wool,8ply used for thicker knits , men's jumpers. Worsted ,thicker than double knitting, but not as thick as Aran. Aran used for fishermen's sweaters.originaly oiled wool so a little water proof. Worsted was used for ganseys and Guernseys.

I ordered an Addi knitting machine. Having no experience in knitting, crochet or yarn. Looking at yarn labels on line and hearing terms in videos with no explanation as to what that means has me so confused. Your video was perfect! I am so happy I found it. I will be looking at more of your videos. I love the way you explain things and you are so knowledgeable on the subject. I will go shopping for yarn today or tomorrow feeling better about it. The only thing now I need to know is what different fabrics I can use. I see some are acrylic, some are wool etc I need to watch this again because I’m not sure how to tell if the weight number (I was told 3 or 4) isn’t on label how I will know. Thank you for helping ease my anxiety for yarn choices!
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 2 года назад
Hi. For most all yarns you can find in a store, the number category will be on the label. Usually, if they don't give the number category (this is usually in luxury or hand-dyed yarns), they'll give the name of the yarn thickness (fingering / #1, sport / #2, DK / #3, worsted or Aran / #4, bulky / #5, super bulky / #6, etc).

In most of Europe we do not have the little pictured yarn ball or symbol with a weight number in it. We look for the square where we see knitting needles with a number and/or a crochet hook telling the mm sizes of the tools recommended.

Im just trying to figure out how the numbers are determined.. like.. is it how many stitches fit in a specific space? Is it just vibes? Or math?..
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn Год назад
It's definitely math, but I am not 100% sure what the determining factors are. My best guess is that the weight category is determined by the amount of weight (grams or ounces) per yard.

@YayForYarn

Hi. Any thickness of yarn can be used to make pretty much any project. For example, there are some lightweight sweater patterns that call for very thin yarn, and some bulky sweater patterns that call for very thick yarn. I hope this helps!

Hi And Thank-U... Do you have a video like this showing what Yarns can be used with the ADDI Machines? TFS :O)
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 4 года назад
Hi! The Addi machines can be used with yarns up to #5 Bulky weight. #6 Super Bulky weight is too thick for the machine. However, the Addi does not tend to take pure cotton yarns (like dishcloth yarns) very well. I hope this helps!

Hi I'm new to crocheting and I was having a difficult time reading the yarn label. This was so helpful. That being said. What would you recommend if I wanted to make a slouchy beanie? It would be more for accessorizing than warmth. Thanks in advance.
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 3 года назад
Hi Dolores. For a slouchy hat, I would recommend anything from #1 Superfine to #4 Medium yarn. A thinner yarn will produce a drapier fabric, but any of the thicknesses within that range will work well for a slouchy hat. I hope this helps!

This is super helpful... but as you mentioned different countries use different weight systems. I am looking at some Turkish yarn that uses yarn NM... how can I convert NM to US weights/sizes?
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn Год назад
Hi Crystal. I am not familiar with how Turkish yarn weight is labeled, but if it is suggesting a hook size "M / N", that is a 9mm or 10mm crochet hook. If that is the case, then the yarn is probably a #5 Bulky or #6 Super Bulky equivalent. If you already have the yarn, you could try the wraps per inch test to determine the weight category. I hope this helps!

Hello , big fan of your videos. I have a few baby showers this year. And I would like to make a baby blanket on my addi express. Any chance you can do a tutorial on how to make a blanket on addi express? Or give me tips on how to make one?
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 4 года назад
Hi Daisy. If you want to make blankets, I would suggest making tubes and stitching them together with mattress stitch as shown in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-J31mTsE2X_c.html When you make a blanket with tubes, the blanket is double sided, and you don't have to worry about the side edges curling. I hope this helps!

Haha, I'm 56, male and a new newbie. I bought some 78% acrylic 22% wool to make a scarf and impress my girlfriend. It's 10mm and basically a single strand. Tough to knit but the texture will be very forgiving I hope. It's the type of yarn that won't make a difference if I perl or knit. You'll never see the texture? Any feedback?
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 2 года назад
Hi. It sounds like you're working with a roving-style or single-ply yarn (one strand, not a bunch of little strands twisted together). These can be forgiving, but if your yarn is really thick, that doesn't mean you won't see the texture. In fact, the thicker yarns tend to show off the texture of the fabric nicely (I think this is a good thing). The only yarns that don't show the texture of the knitting are yarns like faux fur that are pretty shaggy. If you want to make a basic scarf, I have a video on making a simple beginner scarf in any yarn you like here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3GdLcMZmeeg.html The tutorial goes through every step of making a scarf for beginners who have never made a scarf before. You can make a flat scarf with or without fringe, or an infinity scarf with this method. I hope this helps!

@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 2 года назад
Hi. An H hook is 5mm, and an M hook is 8mm. If you're seeing H / 8mm on a yarn label in the video, that is not correct, not because the label is inaccurate, but because the camera has a hard time picking up the details of small text on glossy yarn label paper. :). I hope this helps!

Hi. If you want to crochet a beanie, the yarn you'll need will depend on the pattern you're following. The pattern should specify which yarn category to use. I have a pattern for the easiest type of crochet hat you can possibly make here, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RSzA1-QqMvI.html and it gives instructions for 10 sizes and 6 different yarn weights. @YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 3 месяца назад
That will depend on the type of sling bag, what size it is, and several other factors. I would suggest finding a pattern that you like, and seeing how much yarn it calls for. That would give you a better idea of how much yarn you'll need. Otherwise, the only way to find out is to try it and see if your yarn ends up being enough. I hope this helps!
