Part 4.3
Once again we continue working on the second paint layer by moving to the bird's belly. This is the next step toward our goal of repainting the entire canvas again to resolve the painting.
I'll start as before by premixing the colors I will need for the feathers on the belly, consisting of the darkest and lightest colors I see in the reference. This provides anchors for the tonal range and keeps me from getting too dark or light while painting. The goal here is to enhance the underpainting by saturating the colors and adding the surface details such as feathers and other hair..
This portion of the painting process involves a great deal of meticulous (and tedious) brushwork. Since it isn't absolutely necessary to see every single brush stroke to get the idea of how to do it, I have edited the videos down to the essential techniques I use to apply the paint. In this way you will be able to follow along at your own pace, having seen the method of application in a video that avoids being unnecessarily long and boring.

I keep getting pulled away from it. It’ll happen. There’s only one part left and that’s the wings and grass. The technique is exactly the same as I have been doing, so it won’t be too hard.

Beautiful work. I've learned a lot. Found helpful techniques for my birds. Which paint brushes did you use?

Two or three main ones: Eclipse rounds from Rosemary & Co. #0 and #1 I believe, and the woodgrain brush is my own sable detail round, which is a #4. I have them for sale if you're interested. www.rosemaryandco.com/oil-brushes/eclipse-oils/eclipse-rounds www.brancatofineart.com/supplies These are good ones as well: www.rosemaryandco.com/oil-brushes/ivory-oils

Hi David. I love your work, especially this beginner series. Did you ever finish it? It’s such a great resource.

Thanks! You know, it's funny but every time I prepare to sit down and finish the thing something else comes up and I have to put it on the back burner again. It's almost finished! I just need to do the wing and grass...
