Learning to surf on the wrong board will make it so much harder for you, and in some cases it could actually make it impossible. In todays video we discuss which board is best for a learner, and how more advanced surfers can also benefit by having a board like this.

Got a catch surf 8’ log and it’s my first soft top. It’s amazing can’t wait to get back out in the waves.

Sounds like a fun board!

I am trying to decide whether my next board should be either: a foamie (I’m stepping down) or a long board (at least 9’ 4”). Foamies are cheaper and I won’t need to take great care of it. A long board, I will be too tempted to buy a custom made and spend lots of money. Also I need to reorganise the garage so that a long board will fit. A few surfers told me that they have stepped back to a foamie. I currently own an Al Merrick Pod 6’8” x 21 3/4 x 3”. It’s over 6 years old. Sometimes I struggle on that board due to lack of surfing time, injures, etc.

If you can afford it, maybe the longboard would be a better option. If you have a board that is your pride and joy, and gets you excited to go surfing on, you might find yourself surfing more...

True I learned on a 8'2 wrk fun shape. 1+2 fins. Mine was old school fiberglass. I strongly recommend staying away from epoxy

Generally speaking, the larger, longer boards with higher flotation (volume) and thicker rails are the easiest to learn on. The drawback is that they're slower, bulkier, and not as adept at cutting angles. It's best to find a board you can learn on and grow into more advanced boards.

Took me a long time to get over the stigma of riding big boards but once I got a bigger board it opens up the ability to ride what would be unsurfable waves on a shortboard.

Me too mate. The more time in the water, the better.

Great video! I’m currently riding a 7ft foamie and want to progress to a different board! What do you reckon? A fish type board? I’m not sure what length of board either. Let me know if you can help! Cheers

Thanks Zacie, a fish or hybrid would be a great option. There are many variables when it comes to selecting the right dimensions, it is hard to answer. If you can hire a couple of different designs and sizes, see what works well for you.

I can buy a used 8-10 foot foam board for around 20-40 dollars here in Japan, is there anything to look out for on used boards?
@TheSurfersJourney
@TheSurfersJourney 2 года назад
You want to make sure it is water tight, no cracks or holes, etc...Any creases or damage to the fins as well...Good luck, that is a bargain!

Can I just get better waves?? My break is a critical and peaky beach break that only lines up on my backhand when the surf is too big for my current skill... Broke my neck getting sent over the falls due to this hollow nature last week in 1m swell. 🤕
@TheSurfersJourney
@TheSurfersJourney 3 года назад
Hope you get well soon, are there other waves in your area that are less critical??
@IamtheWV17

@@TheSurfersJourney Yes but also no due to time constraints and convenience... I'm making pretty good progress and figure if I can learn here I'm set for anywhere 🤷‍♂️ Got lucky with my neck, only chipped the front of two vertebrae. No brace and a short and chill recovery.
