When people start making electronic music for the first time, the amount of choice is overwhelming. A particular problem is when people end up scrolling aimlessly through drum sample libraries, with no idea of what they're looking for.
In this short video we take a look at electronic music culture, and show you 3 starting point for drum sound choices, each of which will gently lead you down a different subculture of music. Start with one of those, and then add your own flavour to it once you've mastered the basics!

I'm curious to know why/how to select the appropriate production studio. I'm interested in producing freeform and maybe some psytrance, have been tossing up Ableton on Cubase-do you have a video on some elements to consider and comparisons??

When you played all them 909 sounds I had flashbacks of being in a grotty warehouse at 5am jumping about like a madman to oldskool hardcore 20 something + years ago :D

Uw video's zijn super-informatief, zonder zweverige nonsens, en ze maken de materie zelfs voor leken heel snel duidelijk. Topkwaliteit zoals je maar zelden vindt in deze sector.

This is very helpful, thank you. I'm not a producer myself, but as an 90s techno/trance/retro house enthusiast, I'm curious to get to know the gear used. I have nothing but love for those Roland vintage drum machines :)

That acoustic drum groove was like a fast version of Sunday Bloody Sunday by U2.

I’m a 909er I use a TR-09 and just ordered the RD-9. 707 is basically a 909 I use them too, then a 606 can be useful as well. But a good breakbeat always useful for some added colour and groove

"707 is basically a 909"? In terms of the color scheme? Sounds are pretty different. Both great and iconic, but very different compared to the 909.

Still I find myself scrolling through a 1000 samples... When I hear a great drum in a song or RU-vid demo video, I still don't know where to start / classify the drum to get a similar sound.

Great video! Something potentially worth considering is teaching the "gated reverb" technique used by artists like Phil Collins in "In The Air Tonight:." I personally used Ableton and had third party acoustic samples, used an Altiverb reverb plugin, added my gate, a bit of EQ and compressors to each sample individually. And made sure all my samples had the same volume as each other so it was balanced.

Cool idea, I definitely will add this to the list of topics. Maybe as part of a video on parrallel processing strategies in Ableton!

Great Video! This comment will not age well, but - if anybody is looking for more drum kit samples than the ones included in your DAW, Samples from Mars currently has a sale with 50GB+ of high-quality samples (many of them from basically all the drum machines) for $39. They had the same last Black Friday, so if you're coming here from the future, maybe they'll do that again.

This is a great tip Haslo, The Samples from Mars crowd do indeed do an "everything" bundle super affordably super often, could be a great pool of sounds for many producers.
