You may remember my techno rumbles tutorial from a few months ago? Let's find out what could be the next level for this, where can we take this technique next?
With the help of a sample slicer and a step sequencer we create weird rhythms made of kicks plus rumble textures, that open up a new world of tweakability and control over your sound.

Thanks for this video. I just wanted to mention that what drew me (and has kept me) on this channel is the excellent instruction that you've provided with Ableton. You manage to teach music theory as well as the mechanics of how to produce with Ableton all in one go. I do appreciate that you've become an ambassador for Reason, and kudos on that! Just consider that many in your audience (like myself) are probably novice producers who had to save our pennies for a very long time just to buy Ableton. I feel that I need to get proficient in Ableton before looking to branch out to other platforms. It truly is interesting what you've done with Ableton and Reason, but the benefit of this video is somewhat diminished because I can't follow along with you at home.

@@qulpe I do get it. The cost of Reason isn’t all that much. For me, the bigger issue is learning the basics of Ableton before throwing another DAW on top of it. I need to master the fundamentals before I would feel comfortable adding another platform into the mix (no pun intended) :-)

Honestly I'm so glad about this video. 🙏 Title says it all: nowdays almost everyone likes to think that if they add some "rumble" from the same kick mainly used in the track, then they do sooo "masssive and hard techno" - in big coloumns. While in reality they don' t focus quite well on ear-candys, details and depths. I don't say those are always necessary, but using absolute zero of them is just another soulless banger from the mass factory - no matter what anyone says. Music should be over business, no matter if we talk about so-called underground or not.

I appreciate that you mention it's possible to do all of this with just Ableton - i've been producing since i was a small kid, starting out in garage band, later FL Studio, and now my final destination in Ableton. What i've come to learn over the years, like most other creatives learn with time, is that tools are cool, but often there are many tools that allow you to achieve the exact same result. For me what's cool about Ableton is how much i can do within that single tool - i only need to learn a single workflow "the ableton way" to do things. So i personally would never even bother getting a subscription with Reason - but a few years ago when i was inexperienced, i would have jumped on the wagon right away, because i was copying tools instead of methods. I think every beginner in any field copy tools when they begin, and when they get more experience they start to copy methods / philosophy etc. I feel like you're walking a fine line between becoming yet another RU-vid channel that just sells more tools and more tools, and this is so annoying to me at this point, because honestly that is a complete waste of time. I love your videos because you focus so much on methods and philosophy, you have such great lessons to teach. I'll be looking into your underdog courses. But i also understand why you get affiliated! It's hopefully a great revenue stream, and of course you deserve to get paid well for this amazing content you put out there for free 😄 But my idea is probably all of the pros watching you to learn about methods etc. etc. don't even bother with these "ads", and then probably the noobs might go and use the link if they can afford it - i know i personally spent a lot of money on gear, tools and software back in the day, and i use none of it now. But no regrets, i couldn't have landed on the tools i ended up using, without first trying all the other tools ✨ Maybe some noobs watching you will end up loving Reason and use it for the rest of their careers! - or it might just help them learn some things. But yea it's great that you mention it's possible to do without the tools you're sponsored by. That makes it feel slightly less like an ad, and a reminder that you're teaching a method rather than a tool. I hope your courses are more focused on Ableton, because i'll admit it's a lot more fun when i don't have to constantly think "oh i can just do it with x and y tools in ableton for free" 😋 Honestly i would rather pay for your content and get rid of these Reason ads, than watch it for free. You're such a great teacher.

What I really loved about your interpretation of rumble is, it creates a really nice blueprint for the rest of your track Like every time I play around with the delays and reverbs it creates all these new textures and rhythms that I want to expand on, really helped me get out of my creative hole, thank you

I love playing around with atonal bass ever since you reminded me it exists, it's actually kinda crazy all the tricks you can do with it if your style of music doesn't need a crystal clear tonal bass (Even then your buildup may involve it etc.), you can even mix the two, as separate sounds or layered carefully to give high notes some bottom etc., I want this to catch on across genres besides techy/ambient stuff. MAN can it be hard to mix into some styles of music where it's not okay for the bass to swallow up your whole mix though, often just too muddy when raised to the level where it's present enough, though leaving it low is often appropriate for ambient (sections) etc. anyway.

I accidentally did something similar with slicing when I mistakenly put a melody pattern on my drums in Reason. Haha Ended loving what happened and kept it for the final track. If you've ever seen the first Appleseed film, the track you are working on sounds like something straight out of that OST and it's awesome. Also, can I just say, something seems different about you. You seem happier and more comfortable in the way you engage with filming. Whatever it is, it shows and I appreciate it. ☺️ (Also I have previously worn, and will again wear, that nail color, so good!)

I just take my hardware synths (Volca and Minilogue xd), put some reverb and a non typical delay on it, then use standard arpeggio and let the LFO decide what to do with the filter and (amp) envelope generator. This creates melodies which stay in the same range and feeling but also constantly change. I only recently figured out how to do it but it blew my mind how you can just take a simple 1 bar loop and make it sound like it's constantly changing.
