Really appreciate the time you took with this video Pete. As a painting rookie these kinds of basic "how to" videos are very helpful. Keep up the good work!
Pete.. thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos. I'm no painter, I just want to work on my own small projects in my shop and I'm just getting started so this video helped me tremendously. Ignore the haters and keep doing what you do, people like me really appreciate it.
Thank you very much Charles. After almost 9,000,000 views, thousands and thousands of comments with only 3% Dislikes, I have learned to ignore the haters. If they get nasty I just block them from the channel.
You answered my Harbor Freight question real quick. Think I'm going to spray my 1990 ZR-1. I'm watching this to the end, I got more questions! Thanks, greatly appreciated. 👍👍
Pete, thank you for blasting through all the B.S and explaining the painting process and all important gun set up! (That was huge for me personally) and for us Garage guys. Thanks to you, I now am getting professional results with Zero Orange peel resulting in glass like finish’s using my Devilbliss finish line gun with a 1.5 needle. Of course using quality 2k paints. Thank you so much, you really turned me into a damn good painter by getting down to the nitty gritty.
Yea I’m a first time listener and about to take on painting my truck for the first time. I appreciate the gun break down and explains. I’m nervous but excited. Still have to prep the vehicle but looking forward to putting color on the old truck.
as a young car enthusiast.. anything I want to know how to do I immediately watch your RU-vid videos.. sometimes I find myself watching just because of the immense amount of knowledge you put into the videos... your an amazing inspiration to enthusiast like myself
Thanks for taking your time, To help us learn how to spray & clean our guns. Don't listen to the negative comments, they are from people that are only watching your video to pick it apart. The positive comments are coming from those, who are watching this to learn. I THANK YOU please keep it up.
How on earth could anyone leave nasty comments??? Just a friendly guy imparting his knowledge for the greater good of us novice painters. Be nice folks.
i have been painting on an amature level for 50 years, I can lay a good coat of paint, but i is still ask about diluting, preasure and tech stuff, just watching your vid was good informative and i like your attitude. I thank you .. Eddie Australia.
Great informational video! Tons of information without all the extra bs talking that doesn't relate to what the video is about. Again, Great Video and thanks for the information. Keep it up.
hey man I just watched a few videos I like to say that they are helpful keep up the good job man I'm learning a lot of stuff from you but hey I don't know if you have any videos on buffing and polishing if you have any tips or tricks for that that would be great I've been doing hydro dipping lately and I've been doing a little buffing here and there but man that is hard.
Buffing and polishing is not hard by no means but like yourself I was once new to it as well. My recommendation is this. Go to a scrap yard and buy a black fender or a hood with curves or edges and practice. If you can find ones with sharp edges (this is where people generally fuck it up) and learn how to use your polisher on/around these edges. A best of all tip I was told when I first started humpteen yrs ago in a body shop is let the tool and polish do the work and do not force the tool. Once you start to force the tool then you are inviting fuck ups. I bought a 2002 Sonoma ZR5 in black, and after the fact (not that it really mattered as I loved the little mini truck) I was not happy with the finish of the clear coat and the shine. I really had very little knowledge of painting then or clear coats or how thick the layers were. But I tackled the thing with 800 through 6000 (it was labeled in micros from lee valley) grit paper that I use to polish my chisels to a mirror finish. It took from friday after work til 4 am sunday morning to finish under halogen lights. The guys at work asked if i painted my tuck over the weekend and I told them I just wet sanded it and waxed. Another tip if you choose to wet sand. 4-6 passes over any given area with 800 will give you your first stage of level. Jump to 1600 or at min 1200. Still use the 4-6 passes. Then jump to 25-26-2800 then to 6k. My method now is always double the last grit and if I can find it double it + 2-400. If i cannot find it I step up to 6-800. better a few extra passes than the one pass that burns through with a lower grit. A $100-500 tip is alot better than paying out $6-1000 to fix your fuck up and your fuck up being spread via social media.
Primer goes on first and the sealer will protect everything when you apply the base coat. If you don't use sealer the base could melt whatever is underneath it.
Hi Pete its been a pleasure wacthing your video I learn a LOTS just about guns and how to set your gun good job mate keep up the good work. Karl from Essex England.
Thanks Pete! My dad grew up in Williamsville, so I automatically trust you! Getting ready to shoot my first car panel and your video was very straightforward and understandable.
You are a great guy, many thanks for the video,i totally agree about why people go out of there way to leave stupid comments, when you have done nothing wrong.
If you is interested in spray painting the best success that I have ever had was by following the Magic Painter Method (just google it) definately the most incredible course that I've followed.
I found your video very easy to follow and informative. Thanks for keeping it basic and not off putting. Inspired me to successfully refurbish the outboard motor on my boat which has given me a bigger problem in that I now need to paint the boat because it looks scruffy by comparison, then it will be the trailer etc.... Much appreciated.
Nice details. You just fed me enough encouragement (info) to realize the secrets to painting my 53 Dodge pickup were out there. Thanks for filling in the holes. Cheers!
Peter that's an awesome video and very educational. Thanks for the inspiration. Pls don't feel bad when others talk badly it's because they are idle. Keep it up.
thanks for the vid. Anxiously awaiting to get my set up going and work on my first test projects. after some practice, goal is to color match steel bumpers, grill ect on my truck with ready to spray color match paint
Thanks for sharing your knowledge Very informative video, an awful lot of you tube videos show sanding and buffing the clear coat when set is this neccessary or should the clear coat be OK without polishing.
Best gun under 200 for base and clear? I eas told got pro lite would be a good choice for both a clear and base gun. Also do you recommed a cheap gun for sealer?
Great video lots of knowledge that i needed to know cause im a first timer spraying my car.what tape do you recommend and how many coats to apply? Thanks
Like this guy, very good explanation of PPE also would u reccomend blowing thinner threw the gun as if it were paint to clean it? That's what I do seems to work inbetween stuff
You can just blow thinner through, but if it's 2k it will start to harden. I always cleans it thoroughly every time to make sure it stays clean, but it's a real pain sometimes.
I have that same devilbiss flg2 and have had it for 15 or 20 years. I took a break from painting until recently and i started thinking i needed an up to date gun. I was surprised when i saw you using the old gun. I read through all the comments looking for info about the flg2 as there is none on the web (i have been looking). Anyhow my question is when using that gun what psi do you like for clear and do you limit your material or crank the material knob out? I cant seem to find the little to no orange peal sweet spot. I am thinking i may not need a new gun now :) Thanks for the video.
I looked at alot other videos but this one has alot more information and easier to understand, but one quick question is it mandatory to set my air pressure to 18 psi , because in another video they said to set it to 25 - 30 psi.
Pete I know this video is a few years old. I am an old detailer, from the days back when we used to use the old grey mud to cut out new paint. So yes I am old! I was watching as you applied the clear and the florescent light shining on it. I know on the thinner coat it was not going to come to a nice clear reflection, and your final wet coat did clear it up a good bit. but not to what I call a mirror shine. I am assuming that was a little bit of orange peel? On a small repair like that do you go through the process of wet sanding and buffing? Or am I completely wrong and it was just the way the camera picked it up?
You have a great eye my man. When I do a repair like that I always cut and buff to match the rest of the vehicle...but that's a whole nother video...lol
A nice job on helping beginners. Like me I had issues with mixing primer thin enough and then having a small tip while trying to keep the primer from drying before it hit the part! EVerything has to work together and it needs to be all correct for the process to work. My issue still is perhaps it is hotter than I set my mix for. I can use a 1/8 tip and still have primer drying as it is laying down. ACtually does not lay down before it becomes an ugly orange peel and even dusty looking. Then when I put like 30 percent reducer in the primer mix it flows better. Yet it is hard to build layers with so much reducer. I have to keep coating it 5 times or more before I get the build up I want to be able to block really bad pieces. Like 1956 fenders that have 80 dents in them. LOL Hope you have a solution about spraying wetter in regard to priming with surfacer 2k. One other question is that once i get a part blocked and ready for paint I find the rest of the car is not ready. What to do with these parts that are ready and waiting. Do I use a epoxy primer to just seal them in where they are at? The trouble is I hate spending so much time resanding these smaller parts and I'm trying to find a way to leave them ready for paint so I can just clean them off or run a green pad over them before putting final finish on them. So I suspect any pieces that have metal showing I would give them a recoat. But it means sanding and blocking yet again! Is there a primer that you don't have to sand again? A special formula I can use instead of the high build stuff? Thanks again. Great channel.
Sure, you can seal with primer while you work on other parts. You could just touch up as you go along, then apply an even coat of primer surface on the whole thing to get ready for paint. I use the high build stuff, it works great.
Thank you so much sir,i have been trying to paint my sons classic mini and have struggled,i have watched so many videos on here , this is the best one without doubt,i am sure this video will help me do a good job
Thank you, I'm a contractor and not a painter but after watching your vidio and some others I now feel fairly confident that my project will be a success. Thanks again!
I see mini guns are typically used for small parts, but is there anything wrong with using it for a hood, or a door, meaning a large part, heck even a whole car? Other than it taking longer, is there a quality of the finish issue to contend with?
89k subs and still answering comments? you're awesome; I'm a truck driver now but was a car mechanic many years ago and did my share of body and paint in the day of lacquer and enamel with siphon guns, (I miss the days of melting in over spray with reducer to get a wet shine) base clear was coming out but I never used it or a gravity gun. I have my first HF $70 HVLP unused on my desk as I watch some videos on base clear and am planing to repaint a 30 year old Goldwing a different color and want to 2 tone it. How long can I wait to clear or should I mask the line and clear both colors separately and DA or block the clear line and top with another coat of clear? or can I clear both colors together after a day or 2, you know there will be quite a few small curvy parts to do and would like to minimize the mixing and cleaning. Another thing, the trunk doesn't hold a shine anymore, is it safe to paint over that weathered 30 year old clear? You can see the project bike on my channel a couple months ago when I power buffed it about 35 videos back from today. Thanks for your videos and 'hope to hear back from you soon.
I make every effort to answer every comment. I use to use DuPont Centari a lot and melted it quite a bit. Used many of the old Binks and DiVilbiss siphon guns. I would mask and shoot the second color, let it flash, pull of the tape, tack it down and clear the whole thing. Sure you can lightly sand and spray right over old clear. It's not the optimum solution but it will work. Thanks Gordon!
@@PetesGarage Thanks Pete for getting back to me. I'll be making some practice runs on some scrap panels to get acquainted with the new gun and the new (to me) paint. Probably start on that in a couple weeks.
Hi. What gun would you say i would need for 100ltr compressor that is 14.6 cfm and is 3 bhp. Just want to use it for motorbike tanks and panel's ? P.S great video's.
Excellent video for beginners mate, I am a person who this video is aimed at, beginner about to attack the fairing of my BMW K1300S. I have the basic knowledge and practical sense but your video filled in all my questions of doubt. After watching your video I stopped watching all the others. You have given me the confidence to attempt the job. Thank you.
Hey you honestly should not delete all your bad comments. It would be so cool to see you too someone apart tactfully and respectfully. I know you can take a comment and shred it with pure facts and experience. Anyway I love your videos I'm one of those people who appreciates and my wife swears I'm a sponge because I'm always trying to learn more watching videos. Have A Happy!!!
Thanks Mark, I honestly do not delete bad comments if they offer a constructive criticism. I always recognize a good idea or correction. I just delete nasty or profane filled ones that do nothing to help anyone. It does not happen often.
OMG thank you so much for this video, I'm trying to paint a car for the cancers that claimed many of my family are you in buffalo ny I'd like to like apprentice if possible
