Wish I would have learned this 35 years ago. Use to skate down the ski mountain where I grew up. No gloves, helmet or any gear what so ever. Melted the wheels off a board! Eventually learned a horrible lesson. Crashed folding my leg underneath me and almost lost my foot. It was actually twisted backwards. Tried some stupedness cranking it around... not a good move! I'm an old man at 54 and am getting a longboard to skate around. I miss it. Just going to take it easy!

I just want you to know that in months of searching online for accurate and useful information about this topic, you are by far the best at organizing and presenting information without contradicting yourself or being confusing. Thanks for doing this! I may never actually get to the point of going fast on my board (I'm over 50 and don't have much time to practice), but at least I will know what the deal is.

My magneto mini cruiser was a love hate. It was low quality, had lopsided wheels, etc. but I made so many memories and hit like 30mph consistently. I have recently bought a landyachtz evo which is better obviously, but the magneto was fun.

Top drawer content. As a complete beginner, I've been trying to learn about longboarding from various sources across the web and most of it is well meaning but lacking on detail or missing explainer for terms like 'micro-drop' that a newbie won't understand. None of that from you though! Between the live action content, the encyclopaedic blog, and now these videos, the work you're doing is incredible. So much respect. Keep doing what you're doing, bro!

This is definitely the best explanatory video for beginners I’ve seen on RU-vid. I’ve been riding for a few years on an original skateboards pintail and I’ve hit 25 miles an hour or so, but it’s definitely not stable at all at 3 ply maple. Luckily I haven’t wiped out yet but I’ve been very close multiple times. Even tho the complete I had was a quality 250 dollar set up, this definitely helped me see what I needed in a true downhill board. So thanks a lot bro, and I pray you stay safe out there. Keep making great content dude!!

As a beginner learning at low speeds I find I have an easier time going into slides with Paris V3 and Bear Gen 6 (both 50°) than with Caliber II 44°, stock bushings on all of them. On my Tesseract I even moved the trucks to the shortest wheelbase.

@huntergibson9359

I found the same when I was learning. I found that the tighter turning circle helped me build force at low speeds to break slides out. I am a big fan of soft bushings and a turny setups for beginners, lower speed makes some things harder, but it does make a whole lotta stuff safer. Now I'm more experienced I can break out slides with less carving into them, at high or low speed, but that comes with practice and building that special little kind of strength in your legs only longboarding really uses.

My main setup: Bustin Sportster double drop. I know you’re not a fan of drop through... but I feel like my setup would make you smile. Caliber II 44 cal, orange orangatang Kegels, Powell Peralta Hardcore 88a barrel bushings board side, Blood Orange 89a roadside (the insert in the Hardcore makes it feel harder than a 88a btw). Vicious grip. And some custom shock absorbers (Dooks that I cut up). The fastest hill here is only 70 km/hr (44 mph), but it owns it, with style 😎. Cheers again, from Alberta Canada 🇨🇦

That's a great video, my brother! I've been casually skateboarding/longboarding since my teens and never really gave too much attention to half of the details you brought up! I got my longboard on a trade a while ago and it feels right to do proper maintenance to it now. Since I'm not tinkering with the trucks setup yet, I wonder if using different sets of bushings in front and back trucks would somehow give a slightly similar effect to the 50-30 truck angles mentioned in the video. Any insight is appreciated!

@pbskater3

If it ever makes it on your list, I think a video about info or the transition between a normal board to one of the more modern DH setups would be great! I'm getting back into the sport after some years off and am thinking of making the switch over to the slalom style boards. If you're stable on a setup like a topmount with a 23" wheelbase and 176mm trucks with symmetrical angles, would it be a rough transition to a slalom DH board? I know the split angles make a big difference on those narrow trucks but it seems like it'd still be twitchy. Idk, this is coming from someone who has never ridden narrow trucks with new, big wheels. I was riding downhill around 2009-2014 so gear was quite different back then.

I have doubts about wheelbases I saw this days a brand called zenit that they have a line called marble 38 that they have 22 to 25 wheelbase. It is because of the length of the deck maybe? It's common to find those lengths?. I am surfing the internet because I want to pick up other longboard to learn slides and do freeride, cruising, and maaaybe sometimes to dancing freestyle obviously deck with double kicktail to learn tricks like Ollie. And I find zenit mini marble 38 alternative longboard chauma m And Rayne darkside ( I have already tried one day) as possibles ones to buy. I have got a landyatchz drop hammer I picked up this one to learn again to skate since I was a child 😅. And yes I had have many injuries falling to the concrete in this time because of not have enough knowledge about this topic 😅 Now understand many things man thanks really I appreciate it keep going.

yeah it's common to find those lengths. The 22inch wb is actually super tiny for most uses, but with all the mounting options you can find oen that works great for you.

I think of getting new longboard trucks for my dh setup. When I put on 180mm trucks with biggie hawgs the wheels are sticking over the edge of my board ( about 1,5cm in the front on each side, and about 2 cm in the back on each side.). Should I now buy 160mm trucks. Is it more important, that my trucks fit to the with of the board or that the edges of the wheels fit to the board with? I also ask myself if its better, for me as a beginner, to get wider trucks for more stability.I would be very happy about ayour answer;)

I'm learning to slide and already have Hawgz 60mm Lil EZs and 63mm Fatty Hawgs. Is it worth "upgrading" to Powell Snakes to learn or are either of these good enough? I know you mentioned 63mm EZ Hawgs, but wondered if the 60mm Lil EZs are too small and the 63mm Fatty Hawgs are too wide, but I'm probably overthinking things...

The Lil Ez should be good enough. WOrth trying Snakes when you've worn down the Ezs a lot!

With the Caliber II Trucks, can I put a hanger from a 9" 50* Caliber II on the baseplate of a 10" 44* Caliber II truck? Apparently Caliber doesn't offer a 160mm truck with the 44* baseplate. I have the baseplate but would like a narrower hanger and found a good deal on the 160mm 50*.

Been thinking around this for weeks, need a new dh setup. My 42» duster is too big, my cruiser is perfect but not for over 50kph. Want a 36» drop deck with 70-75a wheels and Gullwing trucks drop-through mounted, supposedly that’s not possible. Can’t decide on max grip/stability or the ability to powerslide or harder turn capabilities.. because i ride goofy and slide towards left (oncoming traffic) and the hills i wanna go are somewhat narrow and will reach 65-85 kph speeds… anyone know if the only solution would be a deck like this guy? I’ve noticed most dh riders run setups like these

You can get a 36inch drop deck with 70-75a wheels and drop mounted gullwing trucks (not the sidewinderrs though, the gullwing reverse would be better). If you can't slide, work on that first. A board with aftermarket bushings suited to your weight will be good enough and have the right balance for stability and turning capabilities

Would you recommend a landyachtz switchblade 38 or dropcat 38?

Switchblade if you seriously wanna do DH and drop cat if you want to primarily cruise

My setup is a rayne darkside with 50 degree trucks with power peralta snakes with bones red bearings and it is perfect for sliding at 40mph and lower anything higher than that and I’m not doing it with my skills
