A quick flight in the Antonov AN-2 in Microsoft Flight Simulator - exploring how the ADF radios work to navigate by non directional beacons. We start from cold and dark at Wycombe Air Park, and fly out towards the Westcott NDB.
Here's where you can find the checklist:

Great instruction...I still use ADF on occasion in real flight to cross reference my course.

Thanks for this. I wanted to see how the ADF radio worked. In the future, could you please enable some lighting when doing stuff like this. You were flying into the sun so the whole panel is in shadow. It might seem clear to you on your home monitor, but people view your videos on different screens with different settings and capabilities. Also a good excuse to show off the UV & radium dials.

Excellent video. Again, what a beautiful plane. Impressive. It's amazing how quickly planes changed and made advancements since the Wright Bros.

That's exactly what I was thinking earlier. The Boeing 247D is only a decade before this - but this has leading edge slats, flaps, and all manner of other things - the rate of progress was huge.

Nice video. Some comments: The air is not used for engine start. The starter is electric, that's why you see the drop of the current draw on the gauge as flywheel is accelerating. The air is only used in brake system, so usually you should keep the valve open throughout the whole flight. About ARK-9 NDB navigation. You cannot use two radios, these are main and reserve ones, so only one is working at a time. The modes are ВЫКЛ. (off) - КОМП. (compass) - АНТ. (antenna) - РАМ. (loop antenna). Compass mode is the main automatic mode of direction finding, which is used the most. Antenna mode uses non-directional but very sensitive antenna. This is usually used for checking the station signal and confirming it's ID by audio. It does not provide bearing to the station. The last one, loop antenna, is basically the manual bearing search. It is mostly used in case of weak signal or noisy environment, when automatic system fails. You just manually rotate the directional antenna using (Л РАМКА П) switch (rotate left and right respectively) and listen to station audio signal trying to find it's minimum (a bit counter intuitive, but that's how it works, it' searches the minimum in the receiving diagram of the loop antenna). Cheers!

Thanks - great video. You were speculating about the various modes and difficulty of finding documentation. Well it turns out another use for GPT-4 is its encyclopaedic knowledge of obscure and obsolete Eastern Bloc analog navigation apparatus: "The system you are describing is the Rama (PAMKA, РАМКА) ADF receiver, which is another Soviet-era Automatic Direction Finder (ADF) system used in various aircraft, including the Antonov AN-2. The Rama ADF receiver has four main operating modes: KOMP (КОМП) - Compass Mode: In this mode, the Rama ADF system displays the relative bearing to the selected NDB station. The ADF needle points to the direction of the NDB relative to the aircraft's heading. Pilots can use this information to determine the aircraft's position concerning the NDB and navigate accordingly. ANT (АНТ) - Antenna Mode: In this mode, the Rama ADF system allows the pilot to listen to the audio signal from the NDB station. This mode is useful for identifying the Morse code identifier transmitted by the NDB to confirm that the correct station is being received. RAM (РАМ) - Range Mode: In this mode, the Rama ADF system is designed to provide a rough estimate of the distance to the NDB station by measuring the strength of the received signal. However, the accuracy of the distance estimation is limited, and it is generally not considered reliable for precise navigation purposes. The fourth setting is the OFF (Выкл) position, which turns off the ADF receiver. To operate the Rama ADF receiver effectively, pilots should familiarize themselves with its specific functions, limitations, and interface. Always refer to the aircraft's manual and navigation system documentation for accurate and specific operating instructions."

Another excellent video as always. Just been putting checklist to good use in a VFR flight (with ADF assistance) from Mandalay VYMD to Monywar VYMY in the awesome Antonov. Followed the rivers and used the ADF at Monywar to get there. Bit of a dodgy landing, but as I used Sky dolly to record my landing I was able to keep practising until I got it right. Discovered that if you switch the pneumatics back before landing you are able to keep using the brakes so you can at least come to a stop. Keep these videos coming. You are my go to source for flight sim tuition.

Hi Jonathan, thanks for the great video … so helpful. I’ve been waiting for the AN-2 since I saw the progress shots back in April 2021 (MSFSAddon - 19 April 2021). I thought the cockpit looked absolutely fantastic, just like their Piaggio P149 which I have flown for many hours. I loved the dials, switches and the scratched woodwork below the side windows (also all the switches are in English too!). I was so disappointed to see that this SU12 AN-2 doesn’t have the same interior. I only hope that they might add it as an alternative at some future date. Thanks again. Best regards, Pete W.

If you look on the switch you point at at 13:43 in says on second position AHT. H is N in Cyrillic. I am pretty sure you know what Antenna mode means on an ADF :D .I think these ADFs although in Russian they are copied or inspired of western/US older variants. Soviets didn't like to reinvent the wheel. They reinvented other things :)

because you don't have it tuned in. Check the signal strength, and wait for the needle to finish turning :)

I got it started in XBox X but when I tried to taxi.. I could not steer. It might have been the tail lock was on

Possibly. Also - always pull back on the stick while taxiing a tail dragger - it forces the tail wheel into the ground.

Hi Jon, do you know if their is any equipment installed on this AN-2 that tracks a VOR signal?

It pre-dates VOR radios. There is a version that comes with it with the GNS 530 GPS - but no NAV radio to interpret.

How is it that it can't stall?

@gorillachinchilla1668 Год назад
My understanding is that, such is the amount of lift, without power if the pilot holds the stick full back the plane will descend at about the speed of a parachute. So it won't be in great shape when it hits the ground, but hopefully everyone on board will survive relatively unscathed.
@jonbeckett

This a specific flight capability of the AN2. With a dead engine it will just glide to ground. It has automatically deployed slats (you can hear them when snapping) when speed drops and the vs on impact can be absorbed by the gear.
