Nice information, I'm just starting out in this exact need! Question: 2 jars (clean, rinse) or 3? Couldn't quite follow the overall process.

This is an essential video for any amateur watchmaker. Super informative and on the point. I would also cover very low tech solutions like the lighter fluid and hobby brush in the comments for beginners just dipping their feet in the hobby.

I would add a different step. Don’t use paper towels because they will leave fibers on the parts, use watch makers tissue paper. It doesn’t have fibers that will come off.

Lint free paper towels as well simple to find. I used too work in a fuel testing lab and they leave absolutely no traces on our glassware.

Have seen previous recommendations to clean (not just rinse) with lighter fluid and a paint brush.
@welwynwatches5976
@welwynwatches5976 2 года назад
Indeed lighter fluid is a good cost effective cleaner and hobby style paint brushes can be used to remove stubborn deposits. You can even use a soft toothbrush for cleaning up plates such as main plate or train bridges :)

Old school style if you can't afford those ultrasonic machines.

Everybody just says "Rinse fluid" or "Cleaning fluid", please specify this, I don't know what you mean by this. If you mentioned it and I missed it that's on me, but I don't think you mentioned a rinse fluid at least

Thanks for a great vid. A question about watch hands: Is it necessary to remove the hands before making an adjustment? I received a watch from ebay and the hour hand is not spot on when the minute hand is on the 12. Can I just nudge it over to the correct positioning? Thanks.
@welwynwatches5976
@welwynwatches5976 11 месяцев назад
You're welcome. If the hands are out of position then they need to be removed and refitted correctly, adjusting the hands has no effect on the balance as that is adjusted separately. Normally you would adjust the watches timing then fit dial & hands but one has no effect to the other, in other words you could fit the hands in random positions and the balance would remain unchanged.

Helpful thanks. When the proper cleaning machine starts to spin, why does the centrifugal force not fling all the delicate parts outwards and cause them to collide with each other?
@welwynwatches5976
@welwynwatches5976 2 года назад
The parts do not get flung outward due to the nature of being placed within fluid, this creates a vortex & flow within the jar. The flow of this fluid pushes back into the centre, sort of cancelling out the centrifugal force. In older machines they use pieces of metal called wave breakers to help control this flow, in fact some high end machines still do. Whilst there is turbulence within the basket and the parts do move about a little its not quite as violent as you'd think :)-

Very helpful video thanks. I have been using an ultrasonic similar to the one you have in the links and had some good results, I have been using essence of Renata as the initial wash for 15 mins then again in a fresh jar of Renata for another 15mins and finally in IPA minus the balance and pallet fork for another 15mins. I see you mention Renata as a rinse but on the tin it says cleaner and hairspring degreaser? I am tempted to buy the Ultrasonic cleaner you have linked and use that diluted with demineralised water as you say as the first wash then Renata the finish with IPA. What do you think?
@welwynwatches5976
@welwynwatches5976 2 года назад
Using Renata as first jar cleaning solution is fine but it works best as a last rinse, plus the cost per litre is quite expensive to use in two or three jars. In my machine i use L&R Ultra Fine Cleaner > L&R Rinse > Renata Essence Final. Renata is excellent for air drying at even room temperature so this is why i use it in my last jar, with the heater on my parts are dry in 3 minutes. By all means experiment with various cleaning fluids mixed with demineralized water, you will find the results that work well for you :)

Hi Neil, Thanks for sharing your process, it's always useful to collect information from other people in the hobby. I have some essence of Renata and 99.9% Isopropyl to hand, as well as a budget ultrasonic cleaner. Would you mind sharing your process in a bit more detail? Mainly which parts you don't include in either cleaning solution (I see balance and pallet fork should be kept out of the IPA rinse) and the temperatures and durations of each wash? Cheers

Naphtha works pretty good. Works better than lighter fluid.

I'm totally new in this area, and I started to make some service work on an unexpensive pocket watch movement. After cleaning in water, mixed with some liquid dish washing detergent in an ultrasonic, the metal parts in the movement started to rust during drying. What am I doing wrong?
@welwynwatches5976
@welwynwatches5976 Год назад
I wouldn't advise cleaning in tap water and dish soap as there are too many impurities and mineral deposits, the parts will rust if they are not dried thoroughly and immediately. If water must be used then i advise buying de-mineralized water and using small jars, but even then that's a last resort. If available you can use lighter fuel ( eg for Zippo lighters ) as this is great at degreasing and dries much more easily, just fill a small glass jar with some fluid and use a small artitsts brush to clean parts, then a second jar to rinse them off. To dry just place on some tissue or paper and use a small blower to dry parts off. Correct watch cleaners are best but not cheap, however if they are available they last a long time and are very effective. I think i might make a video to cover this issue.

@@welwynwatches5976 Thank you so much for answering my question. All you wrote was indeed in your video, however I have found that asking the obvious questions may sometimes bring out additional information, and/or discussions. I will certainly go for the Zippo route. Shall the rinse face also include Zippo fuel? I most certainly will try to avvoid water if possible.

Hi. I've been told that the impulse jewel and the pallet jewels can't go to an ultrasonic machine because of the shellac. They would have to be cleaned by hand. Do you confirm? Thanks
@welwynwatches5976
@welwynwatches5976 2 года назад
Yes & no, with some ultrasonic cleaners they can have a very aggressive frequency which does not bode well for delicate parts, however most cleaners operate within a relatively safe frequency. If looking to buy a suitable ultrasonic you should ideally be looking for one with a set frequency of 35/37Hz, most will be around 45/50Hz which is still ok but ideal would be 37Hz. Failing that you can always leave the pallets and balance out of the US cleaner and clean them by hand in some essence. Hope that helps :)

Can a 70%. Isopropyl alcohol be use ?
@welwynwatches5976
@welwynwatches5976 Год назад
Personally id avoid using alcohol as it can break down the shellac holding the pallet stones & roller jewel in place, but you could use it on other parts such as plates,screws, barrels. Lighter fuel is a safer alternative or dedicated cleaners, if you must use alcohol avoid it on the balance & pallets. As always with any volatile solutions always take safety precautions !
