to prevent fungal issues and just to completely upgrade your plant parent game, use fans... it simulates wind, and whenever plants are blown or bumped, they produce a growth hormone to become stronger, plus having wind in your room is so soothing and refreshing

I've got one, been on bathroom window sill last 30 years, it was one my father got from somewhere, he had it many years, when he died I took it on, love it! Thrives on neglect! But is it the one he had? Every 5 to 8 years I dump it out, sort some bits of plant and pot in the new soil and off it goes again. I've potted up ones from it too. It's a bit like grandad's broom, had 5 new heads and 3 new handles but it was his broom! Thanks for the great video. 😀

Thank you for the care guide! A friend sent me a rooted cutting about two months ago. It traveled 2000 miles in a moving truck and was so wilted that I thought surely it was a goner. But it rehabbed fine and has had lots of new growth. I didn't even know what kind of plant it was lol so I'm doing my best to care for her! Just pruned off a few of the more beat up leaves - they never really properly recovered from the long drive - and now I know to make sure to give it a bit of direct sun to keep up the vibrant purple leaves.

It took me a bit to figure out their care. If my humidity drops below 55% they crisp up. I also found it's a fine line between watering too much and too little. I love them though! All the worry and stress is worth it.

i just bought a small begonia rex a few weeks ago and the lighter color leaves are getting crisp/dead along the edges. I didn't water it much after i bought it because it was pretty moist already. I did a thorough watering today. you think it was from being underwatered? The darker red leaves look fine. My humidity sits between 50-60%
@cedene30
@cedene30 2 года назад
@@nicvallecillo7557if is it getting crispy might be the air is too dry for rex begonia but you can find balance by pulvericing clean water on early mornings, just as much to avoid dehidratation, but just as little to not moistering soil at all. Like Erica, I was on the same odyssey finding those fine lines between healthy routines you have to switch gently in every season and fatal error, so the best advice I can share is to be patience and trying different combination of these factors: water frequence, light and ventilation.

I loved your begonias, stunning specimens, thank you for sharing them on RU-vid. I have one similar to the multi coloured one (B. Merry Christmas) for ca.3 years now, and its been though hell and back, it sat on an extremely sunny window during all seasons which I kept open in winter and summer, occasionally the leaves were all resting on the window ledge due to the heat and lack of water but quickly recovered, I have never had any problems with my rex begonias, in fact they seem to thrive on neglect, and I never had flowers from them either, perhaps because they are on such a random regime lol but its the colourful leaves I love. I re-potted it once in plain cheap multipurpose compost which I didn't press down at all and its thriving, my next step is propagation.

Hi! I bought 3 of these and they were okay in the beginning, but after transplanting they started to struggle, no matter if I always keep them moist or let them dry out, most leaves go mushy and die. I bought good quality compost and put lots of perlite in it and granule fertiliser. They are never in direct sunlight, but in light room, corridor, on table. Still nada. I have had success with cane begonias. I bought a Rex, impulsively the other day. It is Autumn here in Sydney. It is in a small plastic hanging basket with a wicking element going 6 cm up from the bottom , so not free draining. Thank you for your excellent care tips. I will repot and up with 1/4 to 1/3 perlite . As for the rest , is 1/3 worm casting 1/3 coco ok? (this is what I successfully used with my cane begonias) or should I go 2/3 premium potting soil? Also have you tried leaf cuttings? Your plants look amazing!

@Melody Hale.. I tend to do the same, I just can't help it.. I had one like yours and I just gently removed about half the soaked soil and added new well drained soil instead, then I kept the plant in my bedroom window (west side) and waited until the soil was almost dry, then I gave it a bit of water, not too much but a bit just to keep it a wee moist.. I did that until I could see new growt showing.. It is still in my bedroom window big, strong and very much alive, with the same care and blooming.. Now I've got 3 different, but same family, in the same window with the same care, more or less.. Give it time, be patient and you'll be just fine..

I check the soil frequently and water it I'd say once every week. Sometimes I've gone past because the soil seemed damp still. Its also next to the bathroom so whenever I shower it get a good amount of humidity from it, I also mist it from time to time. But yet its still crispy and drying. I barely have any leaves left! I find it easiest and most effective to bottom water, I don't risk excess water on the leaves and the plant will only take up the water it needs but it thoroughly saturates the root mass at the same time. I just leave it until the top soil begins to feel moist and then allow it to drip before placing back where it belongs

Thank you for making this video, I have been trying to keep my eye out for these begonia videos! I bought 3 rex begonias, two red and black ones and your same light one, from my big box hardware store a year ago. Same things happened to me! I ended up loosing one and my other two where getting thinner by the week. I cut back about 6 months ago when I started getting new growth, but the new growth hasn’t gotten any bigger. I put them in a small terrarium with two other 4in plants, and they truely haven’t done anything in the last 5 months. Do you think it’s too humid now? That first month the new growth got slightly bigger, then seemed to just stay the same. Any tips?

Hi Rachael If your begonias look fairly healthy, but just aren't growing, it is most likely due to low lighting, although lack of fertilizer could also be an issue. I don't think humidity is the problem. Low humidity can cause brown leaf edges, and very high humidity without any ventilation can make disease more likely, but it wont impact the growth rate much. Sometimes when you repot a begonia, or change its location, it can sit doing nothing, just getting used to its new home, before finanlly starting to produce new growth. Fingers crossed your begonias start to behave themselves. :) Best wishes Andrew

Rachel, If I may, this is what I think from my experiences: as the video above said, don't overwater your rex begonias, let them go dry till the top layer of soil feels dry to the touch - seriously - I lived in the northern outer area of London UK, so not a country with high humidity levels, especially not in the summer in a heat wave, I'm not sure a terrarium is the answer, I think better light might be more useful. having said that, I have done plenty a mistake in the past. I'm now 2 weeks into my new home ca.80 miles SE from where I lived, my rex begonias are fine, its one of the cane begonias that took a massive sulk and dropped all its leaves in the last few days... go figure lol Also Monty Don swears by seaweed fertiliser, I started using that too, give it some consideration, but don't feed your houseplants if you think they are ill, it can make it worst. Another tip I was given from an expert is to read lots about what you are growing to help you reach an informed decision. I hope you can sort it, Rex begonias are truly worth the bother (or in my case - the lack of) :-)

Can you do an update on begonia Rex. A lot of RU-vidrs stay away from begonia Rex so I have my first plant for about 2 weeks and it looks better than when I got it from The Big box store but I still need help. Would greatly appreciate an updated video my leaves are crunchy just on the edges now and the colors have balanced out a little bit but I got to correct a little bit of that crispiness it doesn't look damaged it just feels crispy help
@hollypuckett3931

Crispy leaf edges is typically an indication of either poor humidity or poor water conditions which may be that it had been allowed to dry out too much at one point or the water quality is poor. They can be sensitive to salts and minerals in tap water so using distilled may help

I have something hurting the leaves of my begonia rex. They are new to me and I am new to growing in a greenhouse. I suspect they are getting too much water resting on the leaf. What do you think? Can I send a picture?

Thanks for sharing your Rex begonia tips! I just got the escargot and love him dearly. It lost a few leaves since I received it thru the mail (bare root) and put it in African violet potting soil. It has perked up with two waterings in one week and I now keep it by an east facing window beside my humidifier and cane begonias I just got...hoping escargot will make it. Its leaves are dry on the edges tho...not sure why. Hmmm.

Hey Ms Wing, if I may suggest that you consider boiling your water and let it cool down over night... this will get rid of chlorine in the water, chlorine can sometimes cause brown tips on some plants, see if it makes a difference. Also if you can collect and use rain water. I don't have a watering schedule, I go by looks and if I'm uncertain I touch it, I let the surface go seriously dry on pretty much most of my houseplants, in the winter I'm less at it, in the summer I'm going around with the water every day to see who needs a drink...

@@charliebrown9188 many thanks! will try the boiled water treatment. I figured it’s the water effecting my begonias and even other types too. Seems my cane begonias are generally hardier and doing better...I won’t give up on little escargot though. Just too cute to lose.

@@MsWing-ij9nb Ms Wing, I have to share this with someone: today I was tidying up around my home and when I picked the stand (chair) where my begonia 'merry christmas' is sitting on to clean under it, I got an enormous surprise, its producing its very first flowers :-) I had it at least 4 years, its been in so many different locations in my previous home, and now that I moved house and have less space and less light, I'm presented with flowers as a house warming gift, I'm not even 2 weeks here. I was so happy I cried with joy ... I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that I also water my plants a little less, I do let the top layer go dry, as in you touch it and it feels dry. I'm not too worried as it is in a 2ltr plastic pot and this begonia has been so dry before that i found it practically flat on the window ledge... I often wonder (but not enough to care) what normal people think of me and my obsession with plants (well, I know, they tell me, I'm crazy lol) And I will agree with you, my canes seem to be easier as well. I want to try propagation next.

I don’t think so, cause the stems are a bit succulent like, but clover are the same way, and deer love clovers, so I’m not entirely sure

My poor Rexy keeps getting crispy Brown edges and leaf ends. Not all of them but maybe half. Also mine love water! If the soil isn't wet it starts to get angry. I did have it sitting out front getting quite a few hours of afternoon sun, but now I just moved it out back underneath my awning so it just gets some of the morning sun somaybe that will help.

@maddhappy2286 3 года назад
I would recommend getting a humidity sensor, then, if you're in the range of 50 to 60 percent, you're good, if its below 50 you can do several different things, you could put it on a pebble tray, you could put it in a terrarium, or you could get a humidifier.

When pruning are you removing only the leaf or the entire stem? I recently got one in the mail and its leaves are soggy, ripped and dry.

Hopefully you got an answer by now but on the chance you didn't, I'll recommend removing it as it isn't really serving the plant and will take but a bit of energy until it falls away on its own. And, they're a bit unsightly 😅

@hollypuckett3931
@hollypuckett3931 2 года назад
Moving a plant into your home is stressful, repotting it is stressful and when you do those both at the same time it is more so. The plant is diverting all of it's energy into the root system now, reestablishing itself to feel strong and secure. During this time the plant will look sad but it's best to treat it as if it's healthy and allow it to recover. If it doesn't bounce back or continues to decline, then there's a bigger issue to resolve somewhere. Be mindful the size of the pot you've moved it into and if it's MUCH larger than the last pot, keep in mind that all that soil is holding much more moisture than the plant can take in and if it stays too dry for too long, it will rot.
