Great minds thank alike. I am a firm believer in root pruning. It can really give a new lease on life for any plant. Root pruning allows you to keep reusing your favorite planter over again. Just trim down the roots instead of getting a bigger pot when it needs a repot. I had a similar situation with early stages of root rot on my hoya carnosa earlier this spring. After de-potting it for it's regular spring repot, I was assaulted with the foul smell of decay. I am was bit more drastic with mine, I took it outdoors and completely removed all the old soil and than pruned away all affected roots and afterwards sprayed it down with diluted H2O2 peroxide to zap any fungal and microbe colonies. I repotted it into a better draining aroid mix and started training it up on a moss pole. That was 3 months ago and thankfully the hoya's are thriving and loving life. 👍

I don't know if this applies to all plants or just trees, but I've learned to never prune roots and foliage at the same time since it stresses the plant more, and with the reduced root mass, it needs the foliage to catch the light and bring in more carbon etc to grow more roots. And if you cut the foliage, they need the roots to be able to bring up enough nutrients from the dirt to grow new ones. Just something to consider.
@SheffieldMadePlants
@SheffieldMadePlants Год назад
I thought having an imbalance of foliage to roots means there aren’t enough roots to sustain the foliage.

@@SheffieldMadePlants That's what I had heard before too. But when I started with the bonsai, I heard the other way 'round since both cuts do damage, and it's better to not deal too much damage at once, and only cut one part at a time. But I really don't know. Maybe they're both just as good? Maybe one is better if the plant's health isn't top-notch while the other works fine for stronger plants?

Mine died back all the way after I bough it, I then potted it up in lechuza pon and a self-watering planter and it grew back, it´s still small but looking good. the fun thing is that the first few leaves that grew back where silver and not red.

Thank you for the helpful and informative video I had one of those Begonia Rex along with the other one you have in the background. Unfortunately they both died last year... Well, to be honest, I killed them 😳 My mistake was to try and move them about two meters back in my living room. That was a very bad idea and they never recovered from their about three weeks in the less ideal amount of light. They just shriveled and died. I checked the soil and roots before throwing them out and they both looked fine. Lesson learned, they need a lot of light

A couple of weeks ago, my mom was given a Rex begonia to pass along to me. It was really struggling to hold on with tiny leaves (WAY smaller than the Rex I already owned). Needed water CONSTANTLY - almost daily, which barely kept it from wilting. A few days in, I decided to pull it out of the pot and check it. Totally rootbound. Almost no soil left. I didn't have the right size pot to up-pot. Having seen one of your other recent videos about root pruning, that's what I decided to do. I also trimmed it a bit (saved the cuttings, of course, I'm not a heathen 😁). After only a few days, it's looking SO much better. Getting new leaves and starting to fill in where I trimmed it. SO glad I knew to try root pruning, so thanks for that!

While trimming dead/ rotten orchid roots is something that is done, there are not many orchid growers out there that would take scissors to the healthy roots of their orchids in order to keep the plant in the same pot (nor is that necessary) for various reasons. They are precious structures in those plants, especially if you are talking Paphiopedilums, Phalaenopsis, Vandas, Cattleyas, etc. Also, cutting into a healthy orchid root tissue is just an invitation for fungal & bacterial issues. Rotten roots, a different story :)

@@SheffieldMadePlants 🥺the quest to finally find something to eliminate those pesky nuisances is getting harder and harder! Many years ago when we spotted larvae in the substrate (or mould as an older colleague used to call it) we just added a tiny drop of washing up liquid in the watering can and bingo, job done! They didn't get the chance to mature into adult flies. But that doesn't work anymore 😕

So did your wife actually let you use her cutting board and knife to chop this plant or did you do it while she was out of house on errands

The reason why your plant has root rot because your plant is purple and it can’t absorb that much sunlight
