Abandoned Monastery
a little history
Built in 1864 on the plans of John Ostell, the Chapel of the Grand Seminary of Montreal was renovated and enlarged between 1904 and 1907 under the command of Jean-Omer Marchand.
The interior decor is Beaux-Arts style. The stalls on each side of the central aisle are oak and the walls are made of Caen stone. The vault of the apse is decorated with a canvas of Joseph Saint-Charles (Canadian painter, 1868-1956). The roof structure of the wooden basilical style roof is decorated with painted patterns and gold leaf. The central beam is 54 m long.
The organ found there, inaugurated in 1990, is a faithful reproduction of a classical French instrument. Its cuneiform bellows are operated either manually or by an electric fan1.

doesnt matter if your religious or not, to let buildings like this decay is abhorrent, the craftsmanship that went into them is long gone and when they crumble we will never see the likes again, people would pay to go and visit them if used as a museum, such beauty belongs sadly to an age long gone, magnificent video could have watch for a lot longer.....

You are wrong, in that the craft skills needed to build edifices like this are no way "long gone"! There are still plenty of stone masons, carpenters etc with incredible knowledge, skills and experience. The problem lies with the financing of such a huge long term project. We aren't in the middle ages any more, when the papist hierarchy could "obtain" finance at will, and they would hire workmen, whilst meanwhile the ordinary peasants shivered in their hovels wondering how on earth they would meet the next payment to get grandmother out of purgatory. In the UK in the 19th century, we endured a "gothic revival" where all sorts of buildings including utilitarian ones such as railway stations, were designed by anglo catholic architects such as augustus pugin, and built with that quasi religious faux medieval style, and parish churches were in some cases retro fitted to make them look like pre reformation catholic ones. The results were not attractive, needless to say

I don't think it is "abandoned," per se. There are no leaves inside the vestibule on the floor; no significant animal damage; no spiderwebs that I could see or that you commented on; the grounds look cared for; the gutters are pretty clean; there are candles on the altar; even the brass is pretty shiny.

I know the feeling. I was so sad to see a Poor Clair Monastery demolished in Liverpool. The small community of elderly nuns joined another community in York and I am told that too is closed. I so much wanted to be a non-priest choir monk when I was younger. I was not suited to the lay brothers life and not educated enough for the priesthood. I had enough Latin and the voice for a choir monk. I have my "choir stall" in my bedroom and a small altar where I recite or sing parts of the Divine Office which I pieced together on my computer so that it sounds like I am in choir with others. 'I have a Carthusian style cowl and scapular that nobody ever sees and I join in voice and intention with the Carthusian community at Parkminster Charterhouse, England. When it is midnight at Parkminster it is 8am where I live so I join them in reciting and offering the office of Lauds , sometimes Matins and Lauds on the big feasts of the church.

I want to commend you for being so reverent in this gorgeous monastery! You are one of the better explorers that I have seen. I really appreciate watching these video’s especially when they don’t use curse words. Some of the explorer’s say the F word to describe everything! There are thousands of words that can be used instead of curse words! I thank you for respecting the buildings and your viewers!

19th. century and early 20th. century Catholic churches are gorgeous. The care and craftsmanship that went into them is amazing. It appears as though there is some type of maintenance (thankfully) being done on the building and the grounds. Thank you for giving us a view of this beautiful place.

Unfortunately, the description is completely wrong, this is the Former Grand Seminary Chapel in Sommervieu, Normandy, France. I believe the name of the chapel is called Chapelle Des Pelotes and this is it's brief history (originally built in the 1800s as a secondary school, which contained a massive chapel. The seminary operated until early 1900’s when the church separated from the state, in the middle of WW1 the Belgian army set up a hospital there for soldiers. And then later turned into a home for ex servicemen until it sadly closed down in 2000.) The gargoyles on this monastery with their "open mouths" that you pointed out and were puzzled by are actually to carry away the rainwater from the roof and direct it out of the open mouths and onto the ground and away from the foundation of the building.

There is no grafitti, the stained glass is all unbroken, no fire scorched walls, no beer bottles, condoms, needles. That place is not abandoned and is well watched and cared for.

You are correct. This is the Grand Seminary of Montreal, Canada. In the 1950's there were 350 students, as of a couple of years ago, there were 17. Some parts are underutilized and I am sure some dorms and classrooms have been closed off. Parts of the complex are registered as Canadian Historical Sites. The monastery is absolutely beautiful, thank you for sharing!! Our Mother Mary-Always Protects Holy Ground. The locked Tabernacle that used to house Our Lord needs to come back! All the wooden seats as you first walked in, where the monks would sing their Gregorian chants to Praise Our Lord everyday! Poor France, poor Paris, she's been through so much in time! Notre Dame & all the fires through all the years of war in the past. It's not over yet but You will once again Arise Victorious in the end! Love to All! Praise to The Triune God! Amen ♡♡♡

This is the Chapelle des Pelotes in Sommervieu, Normandy. It is a former Grand Seminary Chapel apparently modeled after the one in Montreal which was completed in 1694.

Saucerful Thank you, in the 60’s the (Roman Catholic) Church used to have worldwide vocation events to recruit clergy but that was 50 years ago so now the young ones then are old. There aren’t so many prepared for a life of poverty chastity and obedience anymore! It looks as if someone caretakes . The small metal casket was for the consecrated communion host(wafers) and was usually on the altar.

What an architectural wonder !! Those doors, windows, magnificent cathedrals and so much more.. and all of the work that went into the initial building of such a place, So Beautiful, I can only imagine the acoustics in this place filled with the voices of the Monks chanting and singing.. So sad to see it empty. It's like something out of a dream, Ty for the wonderful tour... :)

For Mary Palm and others who may be interested, the former seminary is at Sommervieux in the départment of Calvados in Normandy. The site had been that of the country house of the Bishop of Bayeux since 1477, the original house being destroyed in the 18th century. In 1838 the seminary was established and the main buildings erected 1838-51 to the design of Edouard Le Forestier who, however, died before the chapel was built. The work was continued by l'Abbé Alexandre Noget-Lacour and the chapel opened in 1891. At the separation of church and state in France in 1906 the seminary commandeered by the state and served as a military hospital during the First World War. It was returned to the Diocese of Bayeux at some time after the Second World War and was used as a holiday home for children (colonie de vacances) and more recently two different lay communities, the Chemin Neuf and Charles de Foucauld group used it. It was sold in 2016 to a local couple who are retoring the main building at present and have plans to restore the chapel. Hmmm, actually the Bible says to worship God in Spirit and in Truth. That means God is only to be worshipped by the power of the Holy Spirit , and by the truth of His Word which is Jesus Christ. The monks did not do that. They worshipped false idols and Mary and the saints- something the Lord specifically tells us NEVER ever to do. God says there is only One Mediator between God and man and it is Jesus Christ. Jesus also said no one comes to the Father but by Me. That means you can't go to the Father through Mary and you can't go to the Father through the saints, but only by Jesus Christ alone can you reach the Father. The catholic church is filled with paganism and pedophiles and does not follow the true teachings of the Bible but rather warps them and twists scripture to meet its own religious requirements rather than God's own Word. Just remember that satanists, witches, and Santeria all use crosses and statues of saints and Mary and Jesus to practice their evil religions too. Religious articles isn't what makes us religious, and God even told us not to use them or make them. Christianity is about following GOD'S word, not diminishing it to appease the catechism and the pope's point of view.

Until in 1455 when J Gutenburg printed the first copies of the Bible it was manuscripted by the christian monks.. Protestants forget that their Sola Sciptura was possible only by Catholic Monks dedicating their likes.

Beautiful building it cant be left to slowly decay and eventually fall down like so many old buildings do. On a personal note its so good to see someone who obviously cares about our heritage and enjoys visiting it and by your videos can share it with so many us who can not get to see it for various reasons. Keep up the great work, share your videos to make people aware of buildings and other important structures and just maybe they wont be allowed to rot and eventually fall down so that the site can be redeveloped.

We should all respect these old beautiful buildings and be ashamed of ourselves for allowing any of them for being empty, yet alone having any single deterioration. There are so many people who would at least pay to tour these amazing structures. It is sinful that our world has so many useful buildings empty. We have so many people in the world that cannot afford a simple rooftop or any structure over their heads and yet, we would rather allow any building the opportunity to rot than open its doors to those in need. So many uses, God watches and has been observing our callus ways. We are now reaping what we globally have sowed...waste! Thank you for sharing this fabulous monastery. 💜✝️

GREAT VIDEO. THANKS. Being raised Catholic I thought at first this was simply a church and rectory on the side. However, it is a monastery. The statues up on the walls are Catholic Saints and used to pray roseries and are called stations if I recollect rightly. Catholics are very much into rituals. The Stations and Rosery is a ritual the occupants of the monastery would perform.

The holes in mouths of creatures are for rain drainage from the roof .Many of us still go to church. Wish an order would move in that beautiful monastery.

This is not a monastery, but the Grand Séminaire de Sommervieu in Normandy : It is not abandoned. The "monks" still play there. While the building is not very well up kept, my advice, don't go back there. The Kings on the walls are a testament to the Building. Even in 1990, the Mayors of the towns around Normandy visited to do business. This is not a safe place to be, at any time. (unless you knock on the front door and ask for a tour) You would probably get one.

The tile floor.....beautiful! We went to London and climbed the steps up, up, up at St Pauls Cathedral. Once at top, we started to ascend a winding iron staircase to the “Golden Gallery”. My husband had to stop, he was scared of heights. The space on the winding staircase was so tight, I almost freaked out.

This place has not been abandoned ,it been given official state heritage , it is still used to bury Sulpician priests . The building attached in the gardens is a private Boys school so you could have got permission to go In and view it .

Chateau and Former Grand Seminary Chapel in Sommervieu, Normandy, France The site includes a 19th-century chateau and chapel, located on the site of a medieval castle which no longer exists. The seminary was in use until 1906 and the property was recently sold to a private owner from the village.

I like to thank you for TAKEING me along in this video. I am a poor man and would never have the means to see this place. When you went up the staircase it felt like I was there or it's spectacular views atop. It's sad that Chritianity is decaying with the Church..I know it's all about Christ always has been. But can only imagine when this church was in full swing and ppl went there to see like minded ppl of faith.. What a great video .. This made me cry as my church has been hijacked by the evilness of satan and his minions. As a Roman Catholic it is so hard to watch the demise of the Holy Church. Perhaps after the global reset, we can get back to doing the LORD’s work, filling up and restoring the beautiful cathedrals and monasteries with those who are on fire for our LORD and SAVIOR. 🙏

I agree, the building is being maintained by someone even although not in use. Still beautiful and enjoyed looking round. As an ex nurse Im concerned about your continual sinus infections. If you suspect mold may be causing your sinus problems, the only way to know for sure is to get tested for fungal sinusitis by your doctor. Since fungi love damp, dark conditions, the sinus cavity is a perfect growing place, making it difficult to eliminate them once they are in place. ... Personal protective equipment needed ALL the time I fear! Not just for mould but asbestos too. Great videos btw!

By looking at the surroundings and inside the building (monastery), the place doesn’t look abandoned. Someone seems to be maintaining it. It’s not being used but absolutely not abandoned. I have seen many buildings like this in Europe, and many such unused and old buildings (castles, monasteries, mansions) are turned into museums.

Life back then must have been so simple and beautiful. God,food and shelter is all they needed and wanted and they were happier than we can ever be today. How times have changed. The cost of maintaining a structure like this must be enormous - so I fear it will not be maintained and will fall to ruin and vandalism. For these many past years, we don’t erect buildings that touch the deepest part of man. This because today, art rarely stems from the deepest part of man. I hope you shut the door up on that attic with the pigeons. Water is the worst enemy to abandoned places and if water get in, it will destroy the roof and therefore the sealing will eventually come down. When you find open doors and windows, please shut them on your way out to help preserve the place; thank you.

I'd hate to see something like that torn down or allowed to go to waste. We do not build anything like this anymore. everything is made to be torn down every few decades and replaced. Modern architecture has no soul to it.

This is not the Chapel of the Grand Seminary of Montreal since it is not abandoned and GSM is downtown Montréal Québec Canada. You should be more accurate on your description. However it is a great place of worship.

The technology, tools, and methods have all been noted and annotated, sure, but it never ceases to astound me that such structures could be built in that era with those tools and methods.

In what era? It's from the early 1900's! It's a copy of much older buildings, but yes, THOSE amaze me too! Just thinking of the work, the manual labor, that went into cathedrals in the 1100s ... or how about castles in like 500 AD! Yikes! How lovely to live where buildings are around that are that old! Here in the US, we have the ... um .. uh ... NOTHING! Monticello is lovely! Does the Grand Canyon count? Maybe the Pueblo Indian civilization? LOLOL :-)

It was not built by us . We could just about build it in 2020 .its a power generation system built by a race before us ...think about building it with horses . impossible..

This place was built by men to express their love of God, and their devotion to the Christ. Its Abandonment pretty much represents Man's abandonment of God and Christ. It breaks my heart to see it, and to think that Notre Dame is gone breaks it even further, shattered, shattered.
