Unfortunately it takes a lot of money and contracts to keep buildings up to date and in good conditions. There aren't many ways you can reuse a church building without large money contracts and investors. This building, due to its size and location, will most unfortunately probably end up in worse decay and not be used again.

If a church is beyond repair, the artifacts ...stained glass windows,, wood, pews, pipes etc can be salvaged and repurposed in newly built or renovated church. Which is a better alternative than losing all that beautiful stuff to weather, decay and or vandalism.

As a Catholic, I have to say that seeing a beautiful old church like this just lying abandoned and in disrepair like this just breaks my heart. I wish the city would do something to restore it, though I would greatly prefer to see it returned to the Albany diocese and returned as an active parish, seeing it restored as a historic building would be wonderful at least.

you're right about the stairwells in castles.. they made them narrow to be more easily defendable.. and that's the reason why they are winding clockwise, too.. because most people are right handed.. and an attacker from below had the wall on his sword side.. making it awkward to swing.. whereas the defender could cover himself with a shield and still had enough room to strike from above.. :-) very cool building there..

This video makes me very, very sad. Not only because I'm a Catholic myself, but also because I'm a heritage student and I know how it's important to preserve our history and sacred places. It's not only important for the faith, but also for the community. The fact that this incredible building is in that condition, just proves that our society as a whole doesn't care soo much about history, heritage, and faith. If the Catholic community was more present in the sacral life that this Cathedral represents, for sure would attract more attention and more financial help. This Cathedral's just a slice of the current situation of today's Europa and West society as a whole. And this makes my heart cry for real. Anyhow, thanks for the channel in expose and denounce the condition of this Cathedral and give us an important warning about our heritage.

Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, as I am sure you know, just burned and will probably take between $5 Billion and $10 Billion to restore. This church appears to be about 1/10 as big and the damage may be less extreme so I would estimate between $200 million and $500 million though it certainly could be much higher than that. To build a modern church with the same capacity would run between $5 million and $10 million to build. It wouldn't be nearly as nice or fancy but it would certainly do the job. The Roman Catholic church is hurting for funds. They have been hit by many lawsuits in the last 30 years and the parishes are shrinking and donating less and less money. Only a parish consisting of nothing but extremely generous millionaires would be able to pay for the restoration of such a church. What will happen is at some point all the stained glass, art and bells and whatever else they can salvage will be removed then this building will be photographed in detail and then torn down due to lack of funds for a restoration project. Or more likely no one will think to photograph it in detail and an arson will burn it down and the art will be lost and afterwards everyone will cry about how nobody wanted to restore it.
@sashalamounier1432
@sashalamounier1432 5 лет назад
@JoleFin I fully agree with you. It's about history and identity. If we lost what made us, we will don't know what we will become. I understand that not everyone has the same faith and I respect that. But, as you said, it's about cultural heritage. We can have a different point of views about the metaphysical and about God, but we all are humans and we know what it's important for our destiny as a whole. History is part of that. We are not different from Daesh if we destroy our heritage in order to promote a radical political view. Every civilization, especially a civilization with a scientific focus, need to respect history and culture in order to preserve knowledge and understanding of the reality.
@sashalamounier1432
@sashalamounier1432 5 лет назад
@@nunyabiznez6381 Yeah, Notre Dame show for me two sides of humankind. One is positive when we embrace a cause to preserve history and heritage. But another one is negative when people don't care about buildings because of the costs and so on. Neglect history and cultural heritage it's a crime for all people, born and unborn, from the present or the past. If our society embraces the conscience that heritage it's about ourselves and our future, our destiny as a whole, not only Cathedrals and Churchs will be safe but also the humankind. Because we will have the motivation to work together. And that is what I wish can happen more often.

@@sashalamounier1432 There are billions of buildings in the world, and millions of churches, temples, mosques etc. You can't preserve all of them.That may be sad, but it's also life. That church may look beautiful, but in a way it's also a dime a dozen. There's plenty of other churches that look pretty much the same. In particular, there are many actual gothic churches that aren't 19th century imitations. Tearing it down wouldn't imply a neglect of history.
@sashalamounier1432

@@blahfasel2000 I understand your point. But look in that way. Of course, we can't preserve every single building on the Earth. But, we can preserve what it's important for us. Right? You will not tear down your house for any reason, after all, it's YOUR house. When I said that historic Cathedrals abandoned like this one means that the local Catholic community and the West civilization are not so engaged in preserve our common history, it's because to me a lot of people doesn't care so much. In that case, implied a neglected history because we have the option to take care or don't take care. If this Cathedral is in this condition, it means that a lot of people don't care.

We have a "listed building" scheme set up and pretty much anything of any architectural/historic significance is not allowed to to fall into ruin. Unfortunately the idiots filming this had no worthwhile knowledge, it seemed, to impart about the building, age/architect/owner ect. or why it was abandoned. Structural integrity?? Doubt it, it's only about 150 years old (Victorian Gothic?) but even so, there are buildings in far worse a state that have been rescued.

The spiral staircases in medieval castles were designed to spiral clockwise on the way up, and anticlockwise in the way down. That was because most people are naturally right handed, which gives anyone defending the castle with a sword an advantage over someone attempting to take control of that castle that is likewise armed with a sword.

The church resolved to build a larger building with a more artistic and elaborate design. A large plot of land, bounded by Ten Broeck, Second and First streets, was acquired for $45,000. Plans for the new building were drawn up by Patrick Keeley. The ground was broken in the fall of 1855. The cornerstone was laid by the Rev. Bishop McCloskey on June 1, 1856. The mammoth Gothic Revival styled building, measuring 212-feet and 116-feet, was completed in 1860 at a cost of $250,000.

@@JC-XL Perhaps I should clarify. What I meant saying was that mainly in Europe where I am from there are much more beautiful churches which actually date from the medieval period that outshine the mostly cheap and neo-gothic churches built in NYC. @@Jiskpirate Plenty of neo-Gothic in Europe. Also, beauty is a very subjective thing. I love Gothic cathedrals (strictly speaking, this is not a cathedral because it's not the church of a bishop), such as the ones in Cologne, Paris, Florence and Milan, but judging a religious building on "beauty" is kind of missing the point.

No actually it could not easily be restored. Restoring this structure would cost somewhere around $200,000,000 - $500,000,000 give or take. I'm probably underestimating that range. Even with that money one would need to bring in specialists from Europe to repair this church. A structure like this was not built by local craftsman. This is a specialized construction project probably built by French or Italian craftsmen imported just for the job. It probably took a decade to build this. Restoration always costs more than tearing it down and starting over which is why this would be such an expensive project. Also it is likely that it would be 5-10 years before one could bring in anyone since all the top people are now working on Notre Dame in Paris so they won't be available for a few years. You don't turn a project like this over to your local handy man.

The 4-manual organ, built in 1912 (reusing pipes from the original 1859 installation), deserves a special mention. It was built by the New York based company J. H. & C. S. Odell & Co. founded in 1859. They built over 600 organs up until the Great Depression. Most of them small or medium in size, only a handful large ones. This is their Magnum Opus. Unfortunately, many of their instruments have been rebuilt or replaced as fashion and taste have changed over the years. The organ hasn't been documented at all as far as I can see. It has an ID- number in the OHS database, but the stoplist is unknown. Close-ups of the stop jambs wouldn't have helped much since some of the stop-knobs and most of the coupler tabs seems to be gone. The organ should be examined by an expert and, if the building can't be saved, handed over to a professional organisation specialising in rehousing pipe organs.

And if we consider that fact that most likely there are other newer churches near this location, would make it even worse in the eyes of a possible investor. I think the only way this cathedral would be able to be in running conditions would be if they didnt let it reach this level of damage. The fact is : one can love the buildings, the paintings, the organ, the music in a general acceptance. And in the same time absolutely doesn't want to support the catholic dogma. _I am this kind of person._ I am an organist. First of all, above all : I am a musician, a musician like many others. What distinguishes me is I'm part of the saddests ones : the instrument I love and I play is definitely not affordable to me. I'll never get _my own_ organ at home (unless I win the lotto or the bingo I never play to). So I have to go to a church to play such an instrument, but in the same time, I have NOTHING to do with the dogma. That's my deal: I have to support 1 hour of mass to play 1 hour of my instrument. I'm in a church every sunday, but never invite me to pray : I'm here for music, not for religion. I'll never blame the ones who find solace in God. This just NOT my case... even if every sunday I'm here for the mass. It's not the loss of a catholic place I'm mourning about. It's the loss of sense, as this building could be a home for refugiees, as the organ could have been saved, as the bells could knows another end than rusting due to the snow. We have become crazy. We human, have chosen the worst road ever. Our pride has grown to a point our civilization is nearly lost.

The tunnels alluded to at the beginning are in fact voids between the foundations of the walls and the structural columns. If the alter is liturgically correct and at the approximate East- end of this church, the boarded- up stained glass windows are facing South. The South facade of any structure typically weathers and breaks down faster than other portions of a building, due to U.V. exposure -- or-- it's possible the Windows boarded up are on the North facade because the South facade stained glass windows were re-camed (rebuilt with new lead cam) because they were earlier in decayed condition and rebuilt but the North windows were left as is in formerly good condition but recently boarded up because they'd outlived considerably the 100 year life cycle normally expected of lead in stained/ leaded glass windows. There are about 15 dozen more scenarios that could account for why the windows on one side are boarded up and the other side(s) not.

What a privilege being able to be there and see everything before it disappears,all those artifacts are very well made,most of them handcrafted. Thank you for sharing an let us also see these things.

This was not a cathedral, though it looks like one. It was a large immigrant parish, probably Irish or Italian and likely built within a decade of 1900, give or take. In that era, there were organ builders, stained glass makers, fresco painters and fine art carpenters all throughout the country. We won't see that kind of craftsmanship again. As a Catholic, this makes me sad to see. The music on the oragan is from the beginning of the mass (Kyrie and the Gloria), so they could not have been the last pieces played.

My thoughts as well. I believe 13:57 would have been the Tabernacle.

Its absolutely a disgrace that the american government allows their heritage and historical buildings to fall into such a poor state of repair, if this was in england or a other part of Europe their government would defiantly not allow this to happen and would pump money into it to preserved it, this place should be up and running and allowing people to go and visit it, not rotting away, its such a shame, America has some great historical building, but some of them like this one are allowed to rot away, and be forgotten, and some are even knocked down altogether

@@subconscious.com_usa6691 Yea in America we don't waste money on restoring old buildings that obviously no one cares about. I don't want my taxes paying to restore a church that I won't go to. Also if the government renovated a bunch of churches and opened them to the public that would be stupid because we have separation of church and state.

It’s nice to see that some of the art work on the upper walls and stain glass still looks pretty good after all that time.

I think what I like most about you guys is that you don't make the videos about YOU, like 99% of other youtubers. You're very humble, and keep yourselves in the videos minimally, just enough to kinda-sorta "know" why you're there and what's driving you.... But you keep the focus on the places, atmosphere, the stories, etc. Always great stuff!

This is so sad! All of the weddings and funerals and babies baptized, all of the living and praying that occurred in that beautiful building and now it's just abandoned. Have people so lost their faith that they let the most beautiful aspects of their heritage go to waste?

Probably an old catholic church. Structure like this needs funding for it's maintenance. Just imagine the efforts of those people who once helped putting up this kind of church but now it's abandoned.
