I love listening to your talk as much as your playing the violin.

You have the guts to communicate your insights and, again, breaking new ground for us to understand how these creations were born. Thank you, Hilary.

Aussi passionnante à écouter parler de musique -et avec quelle intelligence ! - qu'à écouter jouer. Un vrai bonheur.

where can one go to better understand the vocabulary you use? For example, you said the second movement wasn’t a “fugue” but a “sarabande.” I had never heard the latter term and while I have heard the former term, I would not be able to describe it. Are the terms a playing style or are they designated by the composer? For example, can you choose to play the second movement as a fugue and contrast it to how it sounds being played as a sarabande? Is the conductor usually the one who makes the choice on the playing approach, assuming those two terms are actually playing approaches?

@@Familylawgroup "Fugue" and "sarabande" are specific musical styles determined by the composer. Musicians follow the composer's instructions, with conductors guiding interpretation, to stay true to the intended musical expression. So, choosing to play a piece as a "fugue" or "sarabande" is not common or "possible", as these terms represent the composer's specified styles. A fugue is a complex, highly structured form characterized by contrapuntal interplay of voices, while a sarabande is a slow, expressive dance form with a distinct rhythmic pattern. I hope that answers your question :)
