Oh, I am SO GLAD you guys finally got to Nova Scotia! I spent a summer there, 20 years ago, taking French immersion in Pointe de l'Eglise (home of North America's largest wooden church, and a tiny university with a lighthouse on campus). My boyfriend at the time was from Wolfeville - we spent quite a bit of time there after my French program ended. His family had a beautiful, timber-framed, off-grid cabin on an island in Mahone Bay - we spent a week there, too. It was a wonderful experience all around. If you get a chance, you should go to Digby, home of the best scallops in the world, and Annapolis Royal - one of the oldest settlements in North America, where there is an historic cemetery with a tombstone dating all the way back to 1720 (there are older graves, but they aren't legible anymore). When I was there, we also found an incredible marine salvage and antique store that we could have spent hours exploring.

I was on the Bluenose II when she was in Boston for a tall ships festival, a couple of years ago. I was amazed to discover that you could book a working passage on it.

Ah Lunenburg, memories of a foggy bouncy sail from Chester, to buy a huge bag of scallops for 8 washed down with ballast rum and tall tales. The guy who owned an island in Mahone bay took 6 of us as 19 year olds for a week down the coast. Nearly 40 years ago now.

Thanks for the episode. We missed you in Annapolis and missed you in Lunenburg. I do apologize for the worst weather in recent history, but it looks like you made the best of it. For what it's worth, October has been wonderful so far!

Bienvenue au Canada! Lunenburg and the rest of Nova Scotia is absolutely gorgeous - my family is from there and I spent many a summer visiting. I hope you have the time to explore everything there is to offer. It is a hidden gem not visited often by the sailing channels. I look forward to your continuing adventures in Nouvelle-Ecosse!!

We spend some time sailing around Mahone Bay every summer. I really enjoyed this video, but I'm pretty sure you've got some really painful weather coming. Spoilers: (?) The locals telling you the weather has been unusual is somewhat true. You often do get rain and fog in early July, they just had a little more this year than usual (I think it was cold and rainy every day at the end of June & early July for about 10 days straight). But July 20th they had a ridiculous amount of rain. I think they said 3 months of rain (in a fairly rainy place) in 24 hours, and almost continuous lightning. It was crazy! I assume that'll be in one of your next few episodes. Hopefully going through that doesn't ruin your impression of Nova Scotia. The last few years (when you tried but weren't able to get there) the weather was fantastic, and you would have had a very different experience...

Welcome to scotia! Would love to buy you two a beer and chat about crusing as a prospective cruiser/liveaboard myself if you were game! I would drive down to Lunenburg! haha! (In halifax at the minute!) Also Shelburne and it's harbor on the south shore is lovely, and they have amazing boat building museums, and historic houses like Lunenburg!

What type of boat is yours? I like the swim step and easy access into the water. I would love to do what you're doing! But the right boat could make all the difference...I currently have a live-a-board power boat.

I may have missed it if you mentioned it, but one of the reasons that so many of the houses have the plaques saying when they were built and for whom is because the town (not a city by any stretch if the imagination) is a UNESCO world heritage site. Sadly the town is not in a great position financially (small town populations dont make for a robust tax base to maintain many historic old buildings) and several historic buildings are being sold or have fallen into disrepair.

Did you find anyone speaking Acadian French? A group of Acadians from Nova Scotia settled in south Louisiana in the early 1800's.
@dealbreakerc
@dealbreakerc 10 месяцев назад
The Acadians in Nova Scotia these days are largely found south and west of Lunenburg and around the southern tip of the peninsula. There are also quite a few north along the Northumberland Strait (the water between Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. But most of the Acadians who returned settled in New Brunswick and as a result there is a greater Acadian population in that New Brunswick than in Nova Scotia.
