When I see and/or know someone is having a baby, I encourage them to learn beginning sign language so their child can really communicate with them before they an speak. It truly works wonders for it gives language early on -- learning two languages at the ame time and children who are in many ways smarter. I have a hearing grandson who's first words were in ASL and two great grandsons who were baby sat by their deaf grandmother and grew up with ASL as their first language and one can see and tell the difference.
