Kudos to Callie Cooke and her performance. I went from finding her annoying to hoping she'd learn to live better after her escape, to hating her after she gave up Ricky and the episode's final scene and wanting the slug monsters or the Dots to get her.

This series is getting progressively better. I am Black and as much as I disliked Lindy, I think there was a moment of pause/reflection/change in her. Her stare down with the doctor shows fractures of a different person in her. I think the Doctor did save them with an idea that runs counter to their own. He seeded an idea in her that I think will carry forward. While this episode appeared in absolutes, the fracture at the end made it so much more. This series is complex, great, emotional. So glad Davies is back doing this. And the music selections are great!

I kind of caught onto she was racist pretty early on, the way she was so mean to the doctor, a lot of little micro aggression towards him, and then I noticed all her friends were white and it kind of hit me at once
@thecrispymaster
@thecrispymaster 23 дня назад
What I think was very cleverly done about the betrayal is that unlike a lot of - for example - Disney twist villain plots, they have her do this without ever really changing the character as presented before. She was always self absorbed and cowardly but because she was the central character, we just sort of assume she'd turn out good in the end. @kalebdiaz1671 It's interesting because I'd initially read it more as classism rather than racism (as she was very patronising to Ruby making jabs at her intelligence throughout) but I guess it makes more sense in hindsight. And the two things, particularly in Britain, are heavily related.

I don't think I've EVER hated a character more, and now because of her and her friends' prejudice they are all doomed to die. The slugs were right! Looking back there's so many details that made it really obvious how racism was the fuel of this episode. Lindy didn't know the Doctor and Ruby, but when the Doctor tried to call her she immediately swiped him. When Ruby appeared later, Lindy sulked but she stayed and listened. As soon as she found out the Doctor and Ruby were together, she complained even more. You also realise, like a smack in the face, how everyone else is white and the Doctor is the only black character.
@jaybennet4491
@jaybennet4491 24 дня назад
That realization that the doctor was the only black character was when Lindy hid in the corner and called all her friends. I was like hmm... The ending got me good because at first I thought it was just about the Doctor not being part of their Fantime society but no it was about his appearence. If they are always that annyoing I can actually understand why the Dots started to hate them and even planned to eradicate them all. If they wanted to learn from their mistake to only live inside the bubble and build a new life I would understand it but they refused the Doctor´s help because he´s different and that´s just being ignorant.

@@LeDayz I only realised by the Voodoo comment, that's when it solidified fully. Just before I was like "Wait..." then the voodoo thing was like "Nah, hold the phone." I think it's intentional by RTD. You don't notice the small stuff sometimes, especially if you have never been a victim of racism, I know I haven't, so when it all came crashing down I had to think back on every interaction Lindsy had towards the Doctor and I was like "I can't believe I missed that."

This episode hit me right in the white privilege; I didn't see it coming and I should have but even though I try not to live in a bubble, I *still* didn't realize all the other faces we saw throughout the episode were white until Lindy uttered those words. "Because you, *sir*, are not one of us." Just a reminder that as a white person, the process of rooting out all of the implicit biases and unexamined racism is never-ending. Great episode.

Based on the previews, I was really unsure how I would feel about this episode. But it ended up being yet another banger after Boom and 73 Yards! I was sucked into this world early on, and Ncuti and Millie were utilized very well despite not being the “main” characters. Callie Cooke put on an excellent performance as Lindy. I went from finding her deeply frustrating to having compassion for her to just-HATING her more than I’ve hated a character in a long time. I appreciate RTD’s decision to write racism into a story about a future society, too. It’s easy to think and we’d like to hope things we’ll be all fine and dandy in the future and those prejudices won’t still exist, but that’s the thing about humans. We don’t develop on a linear path and there will likely always be hate and bias to reckon with. The Doctor’s realization at the end was gut-wrenching, and Ncuti’s performance hit like a truck.

I was taken aback by this episode. so powerful, aspects so reflective of real life today. Brilliantly put together and acted, a masterpiece of television. the lead character Lindy looks so sweet but is in fact a nasty and spoilt young lady, a manipulative liar too. Then there was the racist slur at the end, not something I was expecting but it fitted in well with the character. This series of Dr Who is different, so sad for the likes of Jodie who never had the opportunity to work with such excellent material.

I honestly don't think Ricky would've turned down the Doctor and Ruby. He's seen the home-world destroyed so to be the most intelligent one in that whole dome, reading books and balancing a social life balance away from the toxicity, he would've never gone back to his old life after that. The TARDIS would've been his only way out and THAT WAS TAKEN FROM US!!! :( If the 12th Doctor found out how Ricky got clipped, bro woulda reigned hell upon Lindy for the rest of eternity
