Hey guys welcome back to another episode of Slipping Out. In this one we'll be taking a look for behind the scenes gaming and out of bounds secrets on the awesome Half Life! Just to point out I was mainly sticking to the Original version but also the Source version in some parts to create this episode and we'll be comparing some of the crazy things hidden outside the maps, the weapons, and also scenes (including how teleportation works) as you may never have seen before. It's been a long time coming, so lets get Slipping Out of HALF LIFE...

10:30 Regarding the character models: Actually, the first security guard is not the original you showed. The one you showed was actually from an HD repack that came along with Half Life: Blue Shift. Originally the guards (and many other models) were just like the Source version. However, since even the HD repack is older than Source, there should have been some improvements, now that you mention it...

A lot of people prefer to disable the HD models. And there's a pretty easy way to do that in game.

The "hideous" models from the Source version are the originals from the GoldSource version. You just have the HD pack on it.

A little bit regarding the rocket launch sequence at 12:50 - The reason the rocket is kept in a separate box and only then teleported beneath the launch pad is due to GoldSource's lighting system. GoldSource uses static, pre-baked lighting for levels, and dynamic lighting for models, which is why you'll see muzzle flashes light things up, very impressive for 1998! The rocket is a map entity, not a model like NPCs or weapons, so it follows the same rules as the rest of the level, and is only lit once, when the map is "compiled". This has special cases, such as lights that can be toggled by the player - they are rendered once for each state, and the larger the area being lit is, the longer the map compilation takes, upwards of hours considering the hardware of the day. For that reason, simulated natural sunlight is only allowed one instance. Since the launch sequence is a nighttime scene, Valve wisely used the environmental light to create the right ambiance. The rocket needed to be well-lit and visible both to support the other launch visuals, and to draw the player's attention via contrast against a dark background. So, the rocket was built in a brightly lit box outside of the main map, and then turned into a map entity known as a func_train, a generic platform capable of following waypoints in sequence. These waypoints allow for skipping movement altogether and teleporting to the next waypoint, so the "track" the rocket follows begins in the box, then teleports the pre-lit rocket down below.

Hey Everyone! The awesome Half Life is a game I've wanted to look behind the scenes of for years now, however I felt that just using the well known built in console 'Noclip' would be a let down (As I'm sure many of you have already done this). So I've gone ahead and given it the special Slipping Out treatment. Therefore in this episode you'll see such scenes as the Grunt capture scene and how teleportation works, plus more, as you may never have before! I hope you enjoy.

The boxes during the tram ride were used as a light source for the tram itself Also the models in half life source are the non HD original retail models, they can be seen in half life non source by going to the video options tab and un-ticking the hd models box

The boxes in the intro section are used to store the train, before it gets placed on the track. The reason is, how GoldSource (HL1s engine) and Source render lights on so called "func_tracktrains" (a train which follows a pre set path). They're made of "brushes" (so like normal level geometry). However Brushes are only getting one light and shadow pass while the map gets compiled. So if you place a tracktrain in a dark area, it will always appear dark, even if it moves to a well lit area. To compensate this, Valve placed the tracktrain in a seperate room, with lights on every side, so the train gets nicely lit during the compile of the map, then gets instantly placed on the track as soon as the map starts.

The reason why the gabe newell texture is replaced with a normal "Trigger" texture in HL1 Source is because the textures share the same name. The Gabe Newell texture is actualled a texture called "aatrigger" (if i remember correctly). The regular trigger texture is called a bit different and is a lambda logo on purple background. While converting HL1 to Source, Valve simply replaced everything with "trigger" in it's name to the Source trigger texture, thats why the gabe newell face texture got replaced as well.

I have to say these videos are really entertaining - not only from a players pov but also from somebody who has gotten to see a bit of game development as well during Uni. It's always fascinating to see how much of a game is actually just smoke and mirrors and paperthin walls. Best example are the guns. Of course once you mention it, it absolutely makes sense to not render them fully - especially if you think back to the time when Half Life came out. The skybox thing is the same - very interesting how they did that and still, it absolutely makes sense.

Fun Fact : The level c0a0d (The area before the "In the Barrel today" cutscene) contains an earlier version of the Anomalous Materials lab entrance hall. This one is much more industrial-looking and has brown airlock doors. 8:43 This types of island outside the map are always present in every single game made with the source engine, like Half life 2, CS ,CS:S, CSGO, Left 4 dead, Team fortress, Portal and more. IDK why they even exist

As someone who is familiar with the Source Engine and does mapping for it. These are used for the Skybox, and are usually 1/16th the size. Inside these tiny areas there is an entity called "sky_camera", which will then scale this tiny area back up to regular size within the Skybox and creates the illusion there is more outside the map than there actually is. It is also an optimisation thing, as if you were to build that outside geometry within the "playable" area of the map, it could potentially cause FPS drops, and other weird optimisation issues

The models look worse in Source because they're not using the HD models from Half-Life, but the original Half-Life models.

11:09 Don't know why you can't see into the G-Man's briefcase in HL there, I seem to recall it would be visible by noclipping like that. But those textures are in the G-Man's texture file.

Once in the sand buggy I rammed every small vehicle and (car wrecks) past the place where you lift the buggy with the crane and piled them and all loose mats from the bridge area in front of the train on the bridge. After activating the train I watched it go right through the pile of cars trucks beds tables etc. After the train sequence was over I went over to the pile of scrap and though somewhat in tacked it was rearranged, quivering and smoking. I walked on top of it and was immediately lunched into space. Bridge highway, the entire area dwindled beneath me :) I think I landed in the river :(

@@SlippySlides Hell yeah, its my favorite thing to do now, to get high and watch these. Ive been going through your channel to find and watch all games Ive played and you've done Shadow Man too, my most favorite. Ill look up Silent Hill 1 to 4 originals. And if you've done (or plan to do next) Amnesia, DarkWatch, The Longest Journey, Grim Fandango, Nocturn (this one with 4 short games, is really important to me, because some of the camera angles were terrible for solving puzzles or platforming and I ended up falling/getting killed) RE4 original (which I think you've done already), What Remains of Edith Finch, Scratches, Layers of Fear,

There's no way HL Source has lower resolution textures and less polygon for character models. Also, you could have included the scientists in the toilet, otherwise interesting video.

Thats because those are the actual characters models used in half life 1, he used the half life blue shift characters models by accident in the footage of goldsourse hl1

These models were made for half life blue shift, the steam version of half life uses them by default

This is so awesome that you showed so many new stuff that I've never seen before on YT, this was indeed very interesting. To your question what's better, I'll say that the source engine is horrible in my opinion, I love the original Vibe where everything is a little bit pixelated, it gives me a lot of nostalgia where I played half life with my big brother 😂💜 keep going with your work, I'm excited for AC *.*

I agree, I think although the Souce engine uses the skyboxes 'technically' better. The original still looks great and has that HL vibe.
