Rob, your video on creating channels for people over 40 was fantastic! I highly recommend continuing this series. From my experience, those over 40 often struggle with the tools and equipment needed to create RU-vid videos, making it hard to stay consistent. Keep up the great work!

I like a RU-vidr to produce a good quality video, a decent one. I will admit I don't like a RU-vidr to edit or do heavy editing. If a RU-vidr yawns or sneeze as long as they say excuse me. I'm good. If a fly or bug is in the room and the RU-vidr fans it away or says shoo fly, they doesn't bother me at all. Not at all. There is a RU-vidr I like who does not do heavy editing. If she needs to get some water, you can see her walking to the refrigerator to get it. She'll take some sips, sit back down and say something like, whew! I am so thirsty. I needed that. If her doorbell rings guess what. She answers it. We may not see who it is at her door but she answers it. She has a very successful channel. It continues to grow. If a video isn't edited or heavily edited, it looks decent and presented neatly and is good content I'll like it. That's my opinion on video editing. I'm enjoying your over 40 content a lot. Please keep it coming.

The higher the f-stop number, the smaller the aperture, which means less light enters the camera. The lower the f-stop number, the larger the aperture, and the more light enters the camera. So, f/1.4 means the aperture is pretty much all the way open, and lots of light is entering the camera. Also, with a lower number the depth of field - the area in focus is less - narrower - so you can achieve that ‘blurry’ background. It’s not necessarily a wide angle lens as you could have a 400mm lens with a low f-stop. As always - great videos, you're really putting yourself out there.
@RobtheMaritimer
@RobtheMaritimer Месяц назад
Thank you for clearing that up! I get that confused sometimes... I just know I like me a blurry background and the f1.4 does that ;-) Cheers!

I’d like to add a tip about the Sony camera and the power cord. What will happen if you use the rechargeable battery is the camera will overheat and shut off. It’ll do that before you run out of charge. So yes if you’re going to do some long recording sessions, you must have that power adapter.
@RobtheMaritimer
@RobtheMaritimer Месяц назад
Great tip! I've never experienced that since I always use the dummy battery. I've done live streams that lasted 4 hours with both the a6400 and ZV-e10 running the entire time, both with the dummy battery installed... and didn't have any issues :-) Thanks for sharing!
@Dave_Outside
@Dave_Outside Месяц назад
@@RobtheMaritimer that’s interesting. I certainly have had that problem doing a podcast for somebody else. So I did a little research and it does happen. It maybe it depends upon the exact model of the camera. Or maybe the temperature inside your space? Or maybe even the resolution you are recording at. But anyway, devices with these kinds of batteries will frequently overheat if used continuously. So will your phone.
@RobtheMaritimer
@RobtheMaritimer Месяц назад
@@Dave_Outside I remember reading/watching that some models before the a6400 had that problem... maybe the a6000? a6600? I can't keep their model numbers straight :-) But the a6400 I have never had a problem with (using it since early 2021)... and the ZV-e10 has worked well so far (it's basically a newer version of the a6400 that I got a month or so ago). But certainly something to look into! Thanks for sharing 🙂

Hey Rob! Thanks for that video. I can completely feel with you. I have a new channel and just got 1000 subs and I start over again and again, when I say hello to the folks. But I noticed, that you have to stand up for every take. I would recommend my setting: I use Ecamm Live, a Sony cam, a boom mic and a iPhone and you can plug everything in your Mac. In Ecamm Live you can switch between the cameras with a Steamdeck and even start and stop videos. So you could easily sit in your chair, start a recording with a button, switch to the iPhone while recording and even start and stop recording - without leaving your chair! All your takes will be saved on the Mac in a folder (and the audio is included already in the movie file!). That’s what makes it super-easy for me to do videos. I just have to fight with motivation and fear of being a bad youtuber. :D If you need more information about my setup: let me know. I would be glad to help. Have a great one! Jens

From a camera nerd, for clarity… for shallow depth of field, it’s “large aperture” not to be confused with “wide angle”. Ideally, you want to use a “longer” lens / zoom more and place the camera 6-12’ from you to be most aesthetically pleasing (doesn’t make your nose large, etc.). It also narrows how much background is in view. Achieving both of the above is not a cheap lens, so there are trade offs. Another simple tip… use the lens hood. It improves your image quality by blocking stray light. Thanks for your videos!

@hornbaker

@@RobtheMaritimer Wide angle / closer lens does also contribute to making depth of field shallower, but has tradeoffs with image distortion from needing to be physically so close. (Conversely, a longer lens avoids the distortion, but it’s not so easy/cheap to get the same low f/ value.)

Yes, the Focusrite is great. I have a 16 channel mixing desk that couples up to mine, so I can connect guitar processors, synths and vocal mikes etc. I take it you are switching your cameras audio off? Something that strikes me as being extremely important is the RU-vid video’s heading. Being precise, without being “click bait”, is so important, and I think is the reason your “making RU-vid videos over 40” had such a far reach. I for one am grateful. Thank you.
@RobtheMaritimer

I don't actually switch the camera audio off... I leave it on as that helps me sync the computer-captured audio with the video from the SD card... I use the audio waveforms to help sync them together... the first step in my editing process :-)

Great video, thanks for sharing I appreciate that. Just a small observation: I know you said you are a new user of cameras and so am I, but the millimeter value (mm) tells how wide the angle of the lens is(called focal length) , now, the ‘f’ number (f2.8 and so on) tells how wide the aperture can open (the opening for the light to come into the camera sensor) and this is what makes the image more or less blury and blurs the background. This is what I understand to be true - you could always double check as I’m no authority on camera.
@RobtheMaritimer
@RobtheMaritimer Месяц назад
It sounds like you know more than I do as I'm certainly no expert! I only know when I see a picture/video I like... and that sigma 16mm F1.4 lens makes for an awesome blurry background when you don't have the extra space to create it more naturally :-) Thanks for the comments!

Love the outtakes lol, ok I can’t find the important question I asked. I’ve been thinking about starting a channel for over 7 years even took a course but I found it left out all the basics on tech, which is common knowledge to the younger generation, what to connect where? Recoding, saving, editing and uploading. I unfortunately don’t have all the fancy gadgets. If I could get past this hurdle I’d have a couple channels.
@RobtheMaritimer

You really don't need much to start... if you have a smartphone that's 4 years old or newer then that's probably all you need for video. You may want to upgrade your audio to a lav mic (PowerDewise has one for around $25 US I believe). But other than that, a computer to do the editing (with free software like CapCut) and that's it :-)

I did ultimately buy a used laptop with good memory so I would have a bigger screen for editing and more ability to make videos that might be a bit longer, but DAMMIT, I am downloading Capcut today (I do need to be online to download it) and planning to make my first short video TODAY!!! Hi Rob, Subscribed for sure. There is so much value in someone close to your own age teaching or showing us all this vs. trying to understand the teachings of younger folks who were born into the youtube/tech world. (Seems like they just assume you know all the lingo and start their "beginner tutorials" at a point beyond what I know.) I would like if you made a video of what moves you actually make in your (DAW) to adjust or fine-tune your audio(compression, EQ, Reverb or stereo delay) and video editing as well. I am trying to work with Final Cut Pro for video and Logic Pro for Audio. I am an Apple guy. But I've heard that most DAW's have similar features. I am just on the trial versions, but would love to see you go through the moves on how you do yours. Thanks for sharing! Great video!

I stopped the video at the 7:22 point to ask you how you get the audio which you’re recording separately to sync with the video in the editing process. You might reveal that further on in the video, but I didn’t want to forget my question so I’m posting it here. By the way, I am grateful that RU-vid showed you to me because I am also trying to grow my RU-vid channel. I spent a ridiculous amount of time editing the video that I uploaded yesterday about the importance of prepping your food. I learned a lot in the process, but I have to think there’s got to be a better way because it was a major time sink!
@RobtheMaritimer

I do capture my audio separate from the video, and I sync them together in the editing process. I don't really cover that in much detail in this video but I show exactly how I do it in the course I'm launching on Monday. Basically, my video recording also captures audio in my camera so syncing that with the separate audio I capture in my macbook is relatively easy... I just have to sync up the audio... and have to do that BEFORE making any edits to the video. I hope that helps :-)

You said you keep the cameras in the studio with auto focus and auto white balance, that is the opposite of what would be best practice. I just found you and this is my first video of yours, so I don't know what you shoot other that the shot on the leather chair to those camera; but in such a controlled set, it's safest to manually set white balance, and maybe focus, but depending on how shallow you are on DOF, auto may be a better choice. But if in a controlled light environment, setting white balance is best, especially if working with more than one camera for a single shoot.
@RobtheMaritimer
@RobtheMaritimer Месяц назад
You are probably right! No arguments from me! I only do it the way I do it because it works for me. I'm not even going to pretend to be a camera expert... I find all the dozens of menu options in today's cameras to be overwhelming... so I keep things simple. My thinking is that people will forgive a slightly less perfect video WAY before they'll forgive bad audio... so I focus more on good audio than the absolute perfect video shot. So for me, Auto White Balance works, and as for auto focus, I do tend to stand up and walk around sometimes... or hold things I'm showing up to the camera... and for that I need the camera to adjust focus automatically. Anyways... those are just my thoughts and the way I do it. I'm positive your suggestions are in fact the "proper" way to do it. Thanks for sharing :-)
@ERIKCANTU
@ERIKCANTU Месяц назад
@@RobtheMaritimer Audio and video wise, you are doing it right. white balance has a bit of a learning curve in terms of understanding it, and setting it; and if it isn't an issue, keep doing what you're doing. Hi Rob, I just discovered your channel thanks to this "start youtube over 40"-series and I really appreciate it! I started my youtube-channel a couple of years ago when I started to play music again after almost 20 years of not playing anything. I really stuggle with stage fright as a musician and hated the sound of my own voice. I decided to start recording videos as a way to force myself to face this issue and publish it despite all the anxiety it came with. And with the hope of being able to see some improvement over time, as you mentioned in one of these videos. My first songs are really awful and cringe to watch, but it is fun to compare with some of the newer ones. But there is one hurdle that I still haven't jumped over and that is speaking videos, to just talk to the camera. This feels even worse than singing, and with the added challenge that it would make sense to do it in English and that is my third language so it adds another layer of cringe... (my first language, Swedish, would really limit the potential reach) :) But there has been an idea of doing some speaking videos too, I just need to jump in and do it. Maybe some behind the scenes or music studio related topics, just to get started. Your series inspired me to give it a go, now I just need to face it head on and do it!

Speaking to a camera is something that most people find very uncomfortable... it's really hard until you get used to it! I can only imagine how much harder it must be if you want to make English videos but that isn't your first language. You should check out Peter Lindgren's RU-vid channel... he's from Sweden and English is not his first language either and he's grown a very large channel of over 600k subscribers. He sometimes stumbles over English words and will then launch into something in Sweden which only Swedish speaking people would understand... but he does it in a humorous way! Anyways... thought you might like to see how someone else handles that :-) www.youtube.com/@PeterLindgren1

@@RobtheMaritimer Thanks, I will check him out. There are of course a lot of us Scandinavians who make content in English (in our own strange languages, we would be very isolated), and generally speaking we are used to speaking at least one other foreign language. But it is like you get another personality with another language. I am not the same in Swedish as in my second language Spanish or English. So it is hard to achieve the same autenticity. But of course, a lot of content creators also adopt a "persona" even in their native language, some very successfully and others less so...
