Behind-The-Scenes Wireless Microphone Testing

This is a quick look and review of some wireless mics I've been testing out. So far I have not found a great one, the best option seems to be a desktop receiver that's tethered to wall power.
Thanks again to @gardenfork for the Canon camera!

I believe that plug is a mini XLR. There's probably noise because you're using an unbalanced input to send it to the camera, rather than a balanced output (the mini XLR) as balanced inputs/outputs cancel out signal noise. Also to save you time and hassle (though, not money) buy a second hand Rode Go or DJI mic. They do exactly what you need/

I think it is a Switchcraft Tini-QG connector. I don't think they are extremely expensive.

yes the Rode Go ii is very good and can run 2 mics in stereo or mono or a single mic

I'll second other comments that the "non-standard" 3 pin connector in indeed a mini XLR connector. Adapters and plug ends are fairly readily available. I suppose you could call in non-standard since there isn't an ISO, AES, IEEE, or SMPTE standard for it. It is fairly common on wireless beltbacks from brands other than Samson. Shure and Audio Technica also use it. Numerous companies make mics with that connector to be used as cheap replacements or not cheap upgrades to the included mics. BTW, I couldn't make out the number on my screen, but you should make sure that the transmitter is using a frequency that is still legal. There has been a lot of turn-over in wireless audio equipment in the last number of years because of the FCC changing what is allowed.

Nice to see the camera! I vote for a used Rode GO2. And adjust the mic level on the camera. 😀 Eric.

You could check what actual frequency the Samson UHF microphones work on. The band might now have cellphones near or on it. Thus the noise and why they went for cheap.

I've seen the same test procedure for old phone lines. I was 16yo, and finish by try myself at home. DO NOT DO THAT, it hurt ! (can't remember the spec, if it's 24 or 52v cc.... but it's not pleasant ! Maybe my boss has no sensibility on the tongue...

fun fact the apple connector this week is USB C, so they didn't need to include lightning, but they did anyways because editing a pcb costs more than to just leave it

That small connector you dismiss as probably not standard is quite standard for wireless mics. The TA3F (what you showed) and the TA4F are sometimes called mini XLR. Shure, Audio-Technica, Lectrosonics, MiPro, and I'm sure others use those. Sennheiser and I think Sony uses 3.5mm locking plugs. There's also the HiRose and Microdot connectors used in some model families.
@ChrisGoosman
@ChrisGoosman 3 месяца назад
Yeah, you're just using that receiver wrong which is why you're getting the noise and distortion that you are. Headphone level is too high for whatever input you're using on the camera. The balanced line level output with the TA3M connector (you'd need a TA3F to 3.5mm cable, pretty easy to get for a few bucks)

Wireless audio is really tricky! Even if you found a solution, a change in environment can ruin your audio and you likely won't know until you check the footage. Plenty of people on here that believed they finally found a solution for them and then confidently went recording in a new place only to discover that something must have inerferred with their wireless audio or that the range was suddently reduced in _that one_ spot and they were too far away because they tested range in a better environment. There are so many devices that could interfere with wireless transmission. Btw: One reason for that balanced mini XLR plug is to avoid another problem: a mic cable is just like an antenna where the length of a straight part of said cable defines which frequency it's "tuned" to. So the use of XLR will give you more headache up front to have less headache afterwards. I recommend you keep that XLR solution and saveitforparts :P

Id recommend a used Rode Wireless Go 2 that is what I use, also DJI make one too (same kind of thing, no interference, all digital) . I like the Rode because you can get a kit with 2 mics and they can record internally as a backup They also have other features, like recording each mic as its own channel and also auto gain, external mic input (so you can use your own lapel mic instead of the built in ones). Oh and they have a 200m line of sight range

That little 3pin connector is a Switchcraft TA3F, pretty common for wireless lavalier mics. Not balanced, though. The receiver output is probably just too hot for the camera input.

Splurge and get a Sennheiser G series (G3 is nice). It’s the baseline system for this kind of thing, and used models can be had quite cheaply. _Anything_ cheaper is not worth the effort, and those G systems work well enough for many uses. If you want to spend more, get a Lectrosonics.

I have a little thing called an iRig Pre which is an XLR mic adapter with it's own built in 48v phantom power. It's specifically made for iPhones and such. It handily powers my MXL mic but it also can feed in to my DBX286 if I want. It's not wireless but it uses a 9v battery. I also happen to have a Cannon camera and I could not be happier with it.
