Behringer RD9. DAW Processed - ANALOG Processed. DRY - SATURATED - FX. DOES IT DELIVER IN THE MIX??

Note: The volume on this video will be lower than others because no limiting was used to reach broadcast volume. Wanted to preserve the sound as much as possible. With hindsight, I should have spent longer on the treated sections but you can always go back for a second and third listen.
For the record: When I point out clashing transients keep in mind this is not unique to the RD9. The original 909 produces the same type of artefacts with certain processing. My hunch is the RD9 produces it a bit more but it's been a while since I used the original 909.

The best saturation part is right at the end. If you want to hear the RD9 in full analog saturation mode go to this section of the video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Pa1-KfQVsDE.html

Hi Chris! Thanks for the very informative video! I agree...i always turn the high frequencies a bit down on my mixing desk with the RD9 (TD3 and MS1 too). For me its a keeper, i write different patterns with the rd9 sequencer than using a mouse...more fun. Nice you showed us this thing in context of a realworld production too! very good video, greetings

Hello Chris! I am a huge fan of your early works (Stonemaker - 9000 Miles Remix, Dusted pink, 3M5, Bullet Point....). I was very happy when I accidently bumped into your Bandcamp page and realized you are still active! Question: Is it possible to swap out the mike-e compressor in your chain to a different one, whitout sacrifising the sound properties of the 909 processed sound? If it is possible to swap it out, which vst compressor would you use? I have lot of Waves and Plugin allice compressors... Also can you please tell me what is the purpose of the RX950 emulation? To add convertion artifacts?
@MOOTANT1
@MOOTANT1 2 года назад
Hi, Daniel thanks for the kind words. much appreciated :) Use any compressor you like. The one I was using wasn't doing much and really, I could have used any compressor for this. The Air Windows Mackie 1604 emulator plugin was probably doing more to the sound than the Compressor. In regards to the RX950 filter plugin. I tend to use it on the RD9 to take a bit of the toppyness off the sound as the RD9 in general has a hifi sheen to it. The biggest difference to the RD9 sound in this video sound is the very last section of the video which utilises the analog mixer to add a good amount of saturation/Distortion to the RD9. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Pa1-KfQVsDE.html I find the RD9 requires more work to fit in the mix than an original 909 probably due to the HIFI sheen and general difference in the sound over an original. Cheers 😎

Great video :) How did you connect the RD-9 to the computer? USB midi? I have mine synced to my DAW's clock (sync mode set to USB), and it starts/stops using my DAW's controls, but it doesn't seem to play midi notes that way. It plays the pattern that's currently loaded.. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong but I can't figure out what it is .. any ideas?

If you don't want to use Clock, and want to trigger MIDI notes on your RD-9 over USB from you DAW instead. Set SYNC to INT, to select what USB MIDI Channel you want to use: press SETTINGS, then press the 2/USB button, using the DATA dial you can then select from MIDI Channels 1 - 16.

Any tips on connecting the RD 9 to your DAW? I just got mine and plan on using it for my productions. I have TRS cables and an interface of course but in order to get the sounds on separate tracks do I have to use the individual outs or should I use the MIDI output. I'm still new to hardware
@MOOTANT1

You need to use individual outs connected to an interface with multiple inputs. Midi doesn't transmit audio. You will be unlikely to use the midi out. Just connect the USB for midi.

Can anyone answer what is the advantage of recording the individual ins AND the stereo out of the mixer? Why not just the stereo out of the mixer? Is it maybe just a workflow thing so you can leave the RD9 Plugged into those inputs and then route any instrument you want to the mixer for the saturation? i.e. you never have to redo your cables? This seems to be the pro way, so trying to understand :)

I watched the vid a number of times on my TV and thought I was missing something because I couldn't read the notes you were making along the way at the bottom of the screen... but now I can read them on my PC. The process of: "rd9 independent outs TO interface ins, (Mackie processing) TO interface outs TO mixer ins and then back TO audio interface ins" is impracticable with my set up, (I only have 4 analogue ins and 2 on my audio interface are consumed by my analogue mixer... a council estate Yamaha MG12XU incidentally.) I downloaded the Mackity64 thing, (which is very, very clever) but would it be counterproductive to run: RD9 into mixer hot and then record have Mackity on the incoming stereo channel? Will that just be not as good as your method or will it sound awful?

I tried increasing the gains on my analog 90s Yamaha mixer but I need to keep the faders very low down otherwise the master goes into the red. I’ve always kept the master at the top and never touch it. Do you keep your master really low?
@MOOTANT1
@MOOTANT1 2 года назад
Yes you do need to keep the master fader lower when boosting individual channel gains to avoid overloading the stereo buss. But in saying that overloading the stereo master buss can be a desireable effect to depending on the mixer. Some do it well, others not so good. What you hear from your mixer is what you want to capture (if you like what you hear). 😉
@Milesyamiga
@Milesyamiga 2 года назад
@@MOOTANT1 that makes sense. I don’t like mixing with the channels right down because they are stupid logarithmic and just isn’t enough precision right down the bottom. I assume my master low and keep it peaking (too much) and that’s me ready to record for mastering.

@MOOTANT1
@MOOTANT1 2 года назад
Hey Andrew, I don't have such a video but you wouldn't side chain the RD9 to Ableton. You would side chain a bass line or pads, (or whatever) using a compressor or volume plugin triggered by the RD9's kick drum. For a really easy side chain solution maybe check out Xfer Lfo Tool plugin. It doesn't require a trigger and is very easy to use. Alternatively, just use Ableton Compressor and assign any kick drum source to trigger the side chain.

@MOOTANT1

@@MRcyclon1 It can be done any way you like. I have all the hardware outs connected to the soundcards inputs. Those sources are brought into individual DAW channels which I can record, process and mix.
