This is one of the best product reviews I have ever watched on RU-vid, for anything!. Straight to the point without any faffing around plus I didn't get lost trying to keep up with the simpleness of this unit. Many other YTubers could learn a lot from your style. Brilliant. Is this Catalina IOS compatible?

great interface, no frills driver support in windows. Will work with just about any setup. Has ADAT IN/OUT which gives me 8 more channels. Also, these go on sale on occasion for $199, so keep your eyes peeled. Almost a no brainer to have one if not two of these in every studio!

I recently bought one of these for 16 channel live playback; 90% of audio interfaces won't allow you to reference all DAW outputs, even in ASIO, and the relatively cheap UMC1820 was one of those that did. I shan't go over what's already in this great review, but I'll add the things that I've noticed about this unit. The headphone amps have a lot of volume, i.e. they'll comfortably drive any pair of studio headphones without you having to worry about volume. These headphone amps aren't on par with my Apollo X8, and nor would you expect that given the price difference, but they lack bottom end, and some low mids too, whilst adding quite a bit of top end. To most ears this makes them sound open and transparent, they probably wouldn't notice the lack of low end, but it's worth remembering this as if you were mixing on headphones you'd probably end up with an un-even mix as you'd be over-compensating for the lack of low-end. As mentioned, I use this for 16 track live playback, so I cannot comment on what they're like to record with, but the flexibility with the outputs, and the sheer number of assignable outputs means that this is a real winner for me. It's also worth mentioning that the audio quality from the rear outputs isn't affected in the same way from the headphone amp, if you're concerned by that fizziness you could essentially run your headphones from the rear output 1/2 and use the USB driver to adjust volume there. These are £210 now; still a bargain in whatever respect you feel like measuring it. edit - I've just measured the audio from the rear outputs, it does have the same high-end that the headphone amps do, but, not quite to the same level. I tend to mix with probably too much top-end, I can get away with it on the Apollo X8, but with the UMC1820 I'd probably have to correct that at source before printing the wavs for live playback. However, that's an issue that I've caused myself, rather than being down to the UMC. SO, I'd say its converters are on the bright side, but, that's not always a bad thing and only to an extent that you'd need a high-end interface to compare it against before you really noticed it.

Great job describing all the ins and outs of this unit (pun mildly intended). I've had one of these for about 5 years now, and I absolutely love it. So much that I bought a second one AND the ADA8200. So I've got 16 channels for my studio and the extra interface for my live band, where it's routed to a DAW that handles all of our separate in-ear mixes and backing tracks for FOH. It's got great quality preamps, a very user-friendly interface and all the features that just about any 8-channel interface under 1000 dollars or pounds will get you. And it's even more affordable now than when it first came out. I paid 250 dollars for the first one in America, then a second one on Thomann for $185 a year or so later. The ADA8200 was about the same price at that time. Since then, Focusrite has improved the Scarlett series, but I have no interest in "upgrading" to that unit, the Behringer handles everything with no flaws, and the latency is about the lowest you can find on the market, sometimes able to play at 8 samples of latency.

I am a Berry fan from way back, but bought an Audient id44 3 years back, and then the Berry ADA8000 8 input expander. Used these until I had to sell right before the first of the year along with most items to survive. Picked up a UMC202HD to get me by, and when it came time to go big I bought the UMC1820 because I was SO impressed with the UMC202HD. I will be adding a ADA8200 soon. The UMC1820 is a great sounding unit, even tho the driver has its quirks. My ONLY real problem is that the UMC202HD goes to 192Kz, where the UMC1820 only goes to 96Kz? But with that said the ADA8200 ny goes to 48Kz, so it is a moot point. GREAT review, and I have to say if I was not convinced already that these interfaces were great you would have sold me!

Could I lean on your for a quick favour? If you press the instrument switch, does the input get louder? I think it should but on mine, it does the opposite - it gets quieter and so I'm concerned it's defective. Especially as the XLR inputs are unusably quiet as well... Thanks!

Very detailed review, but how many channels can I record simultaneously with my DAW? If I plug in 8 different instruments/mics can record also all of them all in one go via the single USB wire? I tried various audio interfaces in a similar price range and all them 4ch and 6ch in/out devices eventually give me just a stereo signal. To me this defeats the purpose of a multi channel device. You save changing the cables but you can't make a live recording of let's say a fully rigged band (vocals, guitar, bass, drums) or several guitars and mics or multiple (stereo) synth in a single take. So what gives?

I love what Behringer does and I have many of their products especially their synths but this one did not work for me. I purchased from Sweetwater and they were great remoting into my computer to help fix it. I was getting a pop turning on my speakers even when the UMC 1820 was off. I was told this is normal but I never had that issue with my Apollo twin, Focusrite 18i2, Audient or several other audio interfaces I’ve used. Another issue is when you turn your 1820 off it reverts back to 44.1 and if your using 48 it’s annoying. Behringer confirmed with me this is normal. Sweetwater found a work around where you turn your computer on (I’m on pc windows 11)then go to sound settings and trigger sound from there then it would catch. Too much for me to do so I sent it back. I was also using a behringer Ada 8200 with it and that linked instantly. Behringer was great and pretty fast to respond through Music Tribe but it’s just not the same responding through email when your having issue with a product. Still Love Behringer and will continue to buy their products this one just didn’t work for me.

Great review and walk around. During my gigs, I constantly need to find an audio output for the many media guys I encounter. Is there a unit that can take one audio feed from my mixer and avail it to 8 to 10 outputs so that I can be stressed less about media feed please?
@DannyTaddei
@DannyTaddei 2 года назад
Good luck with that. I’ve had 4 of their converters, all of them were the 8 channel strip type 8200s. 3 of those 4 died within months of being plugged in and I soled the 4th before it could die. I sent one of the dead ones in for repair and it took 4 months to get back. They did sound remarkably good while they lived but that life was far too short to be worth anything. Behringer doesn’t make bad sounding stuff, they just make stuff that falls apart. Btw, I am not including Klark Technik in that group as many do. I have two of their spq eqs and those seem to be very good and holding up fine at 2 years now.
@dancetech
@dancetech 2 года назад
3 out of 4? that's incredible odds.are you sure you dont have a dodgy mains power source?
@DannyTaddei
@DannyTaddei 2 года назад
@@dancetech fair enough question but I definitely have pure power. My power runs from my wall to a CPU, then out to a very expensive power conditioner that actually does work (unlike Musician’s gear, furman and others that are just a circuit breaker) and then to my gear. All of my Behringer’s were consecutive as in one after the other over about 3 years of time. During that time I had a Focusrite 8 pre and art tube opto8 plugged into the same Motu 24Ai. Also plugged into the same ac power I had a Motu 24Ao, and about a 2 dozen high end preamps and compressors. I never had any issue with anything other than those Behringer light pipe units. I also had 3 behringer power play headphone amps over the years that also died early deaths. I had one small behringer eurodesk mixer I bought for tiny solo gigs that Had about 1/2 a year before it died. My consensus is that behringer is crap and crap is crap! There is one exception in that their microphones seem to be very very good. They usually have to be cleaned of flux to sound great but they do sound great and last a long time.
@bobwoolcock
@bobwoolcock 2 года назад
Well I figured out how they do it at that price :) I sang the praises for six months, seven gigs, twenty hours of live recording. Then the clicks and pops and drop outs started. Escalated to the point where it became unusable. No warranty, no user serviceable parts. Too cheap to spend money on shipping even if it were repairable. Thought it was musicians stomping on cables or something- no, tested it out at home / same issue. Maybe my experience is atypical. Bought the Focusrite 18i20 third generation. Night and day. Barely gets warm / the Behringer always ran hot. Same HP Windows 11 laptop recognizes it immediately at start up. And the Focusrite includes a proper control panel - albeit counter intuitive.
@in.der.welt.sein.
@in.der.welt.sein. Год назад
Pops and clicks usually have to do with your sample rate settings.
@bobwoolcock
@bobwoolcock Год назад
@@in.der.welt.sein. Yes. However...I tried all rates - no joy. Remember, it worked fine for months - and then the problems happened - I didn't change the sample rate, always set to 512. And then the problem escalated - huge dropouts for seconds at a time. Same sample rate settings on my new Focusrite and my old M-Audio and both interfaces work flawlessly. So I have to conclude my Behringer had faulty hardware. It may have resulted from sunlight hitting that black plastic box. Not pro gear. But you may get years of use out of one - I think the sound quality was excellent. Input preamps are a little weak but that doesn't usually matter once you mix the sound. And since I'm just using it for live recording, latency is not a constricting factor - I can select pretty much any rate that works since we aren't overdubbing. Although I don't want any delay to the foh - that would be bad for the musicians. But I've now upped my game with an ART S8 splitter. I take the transformer isolated outs for my interface and the direct outs go to the FOH mixer. So the first thing I do when i arrive is intercept the signals from the mics, keyboards, DI bass amp - whatever - and then pass the unaltered signals to the PA mixer. In fact they do can do their sound check whilst I'm still fiddling with my inputs to my DAW. And just in case someone has a condenser mic requiring 48v phantom power - that gets passed through from the foh mixer. I need to focus on my cameras. All I want to do with the audio tracks is get nice fat waveforms. I mix those tracks when I get home and then edit with the video. I don't want anything to do with the live audio, that's the FOH guys job :)

Slight Problem when using this interface to send things to digitally to hardware inserts in Pro Tools as there are 10 analogue outputs but only 8 analogue inputs which means the SPDIF inputs are channels 9 & 10 but the SPDIF outputs are 11 and 12. This is a problem when using it with digitally connected hardware inserts in Pro Tools as Pro Tools can only cope with inserts being connected to the same numbered ins and outs e.g. if your using O/P 9 & 10 to send to your hardware unit the return must come back on 9 & 10 and if your using SPDIF then it doesn’t.

Here’s the issue - I shoot videos of small bands, live gigs. I need to intercept the pristine, dry audio that I can mix when I get home and merge with the video. Most all of these are four or five piece bands and have their own microphones,mixer, PA speakers. I don’t want to fiddle with their live sound. I just want to record the tracks on my laptop DAW and feed the signals line out zero latency direct to line in ¼ inch on their boards. I just bought the Behringer UMC 1820 with advertised 8 outputs. Turns out they are controlled from the DAW and even though their driver control panel shows up in advanced settings, it has no affect. No sound out of 3-8. Shame - otherwise a wonderful unit.I recently recorded a three piece band with my old two channel interface. The bass player was adamant not to have his bass come out of the PA speakers - only his cab. But if, like so many of these interfaces all the inputs get mixed to a stereo mix…
@dancetech
@dancetech 2 года назад
have you experimented with the Direct Monitoring control pot & buttons - two buttons: One labelled 'IN 1-2' & the other labelled 'IN 1-8' ? I haven't tried it, but if the knob is turned fully clockwise to PB 1-2, you get direct monitoring and the switch IN 1-8 is depressed, then inputs 1-8 should pass thru to the outputs - did you try experimenting with that? - otherwise maybe try cable splitters -- Another option is taking Direct Outs from the mixing board channels if they have them., or make up some bridged Insert cables and you can take an output from the insert send/return socket on the mixer the venue is using (or buy if you can find some, I think HOSA make one etc)
@bobwoolcock
@bobwoolcock 2 года назад
@@dancetech Ah - cable splitters - that might be the cheapest answer. Thanks. I guess the sound quality wouldn't suffer - maybe a little gain? Although...where would I split them to? For example, I need to take the DI out of the bass amp - into the interface so I can record it. However, the direct output must NOT have that signal in it. The bass cab itself is the only place we want the bass. Anything plugged in to any of those 8 XLR ins gets mixed in to the stereo output at 1&2. Unless you select 1-2 instead of 1 - 8, but if you do that you only have two channels in the monitor mix instead of, say, seven. Yes - I did experiment with the mix knob and switch. 1-2 works but 3 through 8...no signal. As I understand the manual, when you have the mix knob all the way to the left you should have direct output - zero latency - at those trs jacks on the back. No matter what I do, no signal. Turns out these interfaces in this range anyway, rely on the drivers and DAWs to select outputs - instead of just something happening in the box. One man show - I set up a couple cameras and walk about getting video clips which I eventually synch to the audio I mix from my laptop multitrack recording of the gig. I was spoiled by how well this went a couple months ago at a solo gig - my old M Audio interface in to a Windows 7 laptop recording into my DAW, Sony Acid Pro 7. But to further my endeavors I need to record at least four musicians - all their own vocal mics plus instrument DI's, cabs and maybe keyboard. It's all about the sound. If you have the time and still have your UMC 1820 connected, maybe you can do a test on your unit. Go into the driver - Audio Device, Advanced, Configure. If you click on the volume tab you get an Input and Output panel to, theoretically, control the output levels at jacks 1-8. No matter how I slide them still no signal at jacks 3-8.Thanks! I think I good some proper sound at this gig but need more channels for upcoming jobs: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TpRUhTHSusQ.html

We use a splitter snake with two sets of 16 tails. One set goes to our XR18 so we can do our own in-ear mixes and multitrack live recording, and the other set goes to FOH (pro: engineer only receives one large set of tails that can go straight into his stage box without needing to mic everyone up - con: you have to mic the band yourself, and if the engineer doesn't have enough inputs on stage, they would have to unplug their own stuff your set - communication is key!). So in your case, you would plug all live cables into the splitter snake, send one set of tails to your UMC or other interface, and the other set goes to FOH.

@bobwoolcock
@bobwoolcock 2 года назад
@@dancetech Oh wait - cable splitters - so I take the source xls and trs plugs and split them, one goes to their board and the other end goes to my UMC 1820 for recording. No monitoring out of the 1820 needed. Looks like Hosa makes some for $14 - two female XLR's into one male and vice versa.

I am using Behringer UMC204HD for live performance with my band. Out 1+2 stereo backtrack sequencer, Out 3 Guitar - RCA convert to DI, Out 4 RCA click track for drummer. it sound great when using headphones and another output in average level output at home. Problem appear when all out comes together in studio mixer with all the band players, the output sound distorted when raise the volume to average band level output (because need to balance with other band players) , I ensure its not clipping both form DAW or analog Mixer but still distorted when volume raised at average level with another band players I read that because UMC204HD has high THD (Total Harmonic DIstortion) seems cause the problem. Is that happen too with this UMC1820 ? have you try mix in DAW and output the volume up to average band level volume without distorted with this device ?

Excellent introduction. Could you pl help explain the diffrence between behringer UMC 1820 and zoom r24 they look close, with r24 having better functions. While individual trach recording is a must have for my requirement, a quick sterio mix out is also a requirement for production jobs. Which of the two or alternatives you suggest. Cost is an important consideration for me. Pl help, I am just starting and don't want to make bad decisions i may regret later.

both function as an 8 mic/line input audio interface, but with the zoom you can record without a computer (max 8 tracks simultaneously & up to 24 tracks in total). So the zoom functions as a glorified portastudio too.... depends what you want to do EXACTLY which you dont really say

The general gist of this interface is that it sounds and performs as good as ones costing four times as much. Based on comments by the same people, some of whom have returned it back a few times for replacement under guarantee, I would ask how is your unit holding up physically a year later? I'm very interested in this but not if it falls to bits soon after buying.
@QuicksilverSG
@QuicksilverSG Год назад
My issue with a bank of push-in front panel toggle switches is that the subtle difference in appearance between engaged and disengaged is difficult to discern at a glance in a dimly lit environment. That makes this unit hazardous for live performance use (e.g. recording an event). It does appear to be useful in a budget studio.

@dancetech
@dancetech 3 года назад
I am planning to get the ada8200 because having 16 i/o to do tutorials with the mixers would be cool, but there's a lot to do before that. Gotta totally rebuild my work room first. It'll all be in a video dairy. I think my attitude would be - these MIDAS pre-amps sound great as general tracking pre's, then you can reserve your apollo 'emulation' pres for stuff like vocals or guitar. Plus the ada8200 is so cheap you could buy new one each year and just chuck the old one away.

@@dancetech My idea with this "extension" is to have my externals synths, old samplers, reels to reels, effects and drum machines permanently plugged in and easily accessible in my DAW setup, so no need of "high end" pricy preamps and for sensible recording, yes the Apollo and the associated low latency plugins are undoubetly better.

on smaller devices with just 1 or 2 mic pre's it can usually take enough power from the usb for 48v phantom power, on larger devices with more preamps it needs a p/s and/or if the device features other stuff such as dsp processing etc

All the bass seemed to have left and it was significantly brighter in the higher frequencies.. i would like to know if this is something you or anyone else may also have noticed or if Spotify sounds the same between interfaces for you. I'd expect an audio interface to spit out the audio it receives from Spotify or RU-vid without colouring it in any way but for me this doesn't seem to be the case :/ hopefully there is a fix for this or maybe I've just gotten a lemon

Thanks for great review. Once question: can I use external hardware gear with this integrate? External hardware compressor connected to in and out on the back of the unit and then in DAW set it as a send effect.
@dancetech
@dancetech 2 года назад
No i wouldn't do that, the loop time from OUT to comp and back IN to the DAW will introduce a very small delay, but you could do that with additive FX like reverb & delay. Besides, a compressor used send/return gives you parallel compression. If you did want to get parallel compression using an external compressor, then YES you could do what you describe, but you'd need to line up the resulting recorded compressor audio after the recording is done cos it'll be a little laterelative to the original signal in the DAW due to the round-trip latency. If you use a comp the traditional way it will be in series & best placed before the input record point, but with the dynamic range typical DAWs have now it's hardly worth it in terms of restricting dynamic range like you might on a tape system... unless you are going for a certain compressor sound that is, but obviously once you record THRU a compressor, the compression is baked into the resulting audio recording and cant be removed or modified afterwards.

Hi dancetech, thank you for your review, very helpful. I read somewhere that it is not possible to use different pairs of outputs simultaneously with this interface. Is that true? and can you give me your thoughts on that? If that's the case, I wonder what's the use of having so many outputs? Thank you again.
@B3Band
@B3Band 2 года назад
One use for having so many outputs is if you are performing live, and you want more than just one backing track to send to the FOH engineer. In a normal setup, you use a stereo track with the click on one side, and EVERYTHING ELSE on the other. This relies heavily on the artist's ability to actually mix their single backing track properly, for every song, for every venue. With multiple outputs, you can have a click track, one track for synths, one track just for intros and sound FX, one for bass, violin, or any other instrument you don't want to pay another musician on stage for, and they can all be mixed separately by the FOH engineer, catered to that specific venue. We currently use an LP-16, but I'm considering switching to this as the LP16 output jacks keep breaking right before gigs...
