Thank you for the video, very very useful. I'm a drummer and I just purchased an XR18 to be able to benefit of a mixer to be sent to main studio mixer (band rehearsing room) and to record my 10 drums channels in a DAW (I use Reaper). As you said the high level Gate-EQ-Compressor and additional 4 FX to be used are a great way to start with a good sound in the first place, both for live and for recording. But this comes the problem. When I try to USB record on Reaper I can only do in the Analog mode (in the IN/OUT MENU - USB Sends) and not in other modes (POST EQ, PRE-FADER, etc.). In fact I got in huge distorsion and clipping in Reaper. Of course I tried to lower to zero and adjust bith Gain and USB Trim, as well as other setups in Reaper but still the issue is there. I'm quite disappointed as I don't really want to have complex post-editing activity but rather a good EQed sound in direct recording, thet's one of the reasons I got the XR18! From your video it seems that it is possible to "track" EQed recordings but I'm stuck with issues. Any comment or suggetsion? Thanks
I’ve been seriously considering this as a replacement for my typical interface. I track bands as well, and I’ve really been wanting to track with EQ and compression on drums, but I haven’t really wanted to go out and spend a fortune on analog gear to do so. I watched your other video on it as well and i’m definitely switching over to this unit and workflow. Great video….Thank you. 🙏😁 PS….. I use the Behringer ADA 8200 in my set up and those preamps are clean and quiet. I even had an Audient interface and I liked the preamps less on that. The Behringer is slightly cleaner and has more headroom from my experience. 👍🏻👍🏻
Bought this as my gigging rig and when I upgraded my DAW to a new laptop that did not have FireWire ended up trying it out as a replacement interface. The sound is really good. Add an xtouch and you have physical faders. The clincher is using the Ultranet with P16s to provide custom headphone mixes to everyone that they control themselves. Pretty amazing, especially considering the price. If I upgrade, it will probably be to an x32.
Steve.... I'm using my Xr18 too and i added recently a 24" Viewsonic touch screen to replace my Yamaha 01V96. It's so versatile ! This week i bought a Behringer XENYX Control 2 usb . What a setup for less money
They did increase in price and are also becoming scarce. It was a product that was slept on because of Behringers former endearers in Audio equipment. And now that the word is out they have increased in price and decreased in availability. The X18 which I have was $499.00 at Launch and the XR 18 came in at $649 or $699 at sweetwater in 2014
It is awesome Live. And you can remix later at the studio. It used to take tons of great equipment to get an awesome live recording....Behringer changed that. And it's extremely easy to navigate and setup for a pro live rendering. I can't say enough! As we Rasta's say "FULLJOY"
I've been using the X18 Table Top Version in my studio since 2014. I've tried Presonus series III Studio Live 32. But I prefer Behringer X32 and X18.Daw control is excellent with the Xtouch added. Because I also do Dub, I'm upgrading the studio with an X32 For the Added faders Thanks for the video. It was awesome!.
I forgot to mention my personal main DAW is Studio One Pro and Logic is our studios main DAW. We own PRO Tools as well but Hardly use it unless we get a session in that format.
@@kingstondread7064 We use Ableton here. Seemless integration. Very underrated interfaces, these Behringers. It's like folks think they're for live work and nothing else, lol 8)
I hear that as well. I traced it back to the Behringer C2 microphone. It's old and it is a $25 mic. I never really thought Behringer mics and headphones were up to spec. Thanks for the catch!
Thanks for the excellent video. Saw the rest of your videos on the XR18 and subscribed. What is the keyboard you are playing with a bow in your opening?
Steve, the new drummer in my band has the Midas version of this set up. We were thinking about using it to track live drums. Can you send send the individual inputs to individual tracks in a daw for that purpose?
Yes, Robert. The XR18 has full 18x18 (it may be 18x20) USB channel connectivity. So, 18 ins going to 18 tracks in your Daw? Yes! Good question, btw. Also, this is really the main difference between the XR18 and the little brother, the XR16, which only has 2x2 USB service.
Steve I use an X-R 18 for my wife’s Kirtsn band. I have only used it in live rehearsals and performances. I use 8 channels. I have taught myself how to produce great sound in live performances Want to start recording and then mixing. Never used a DAW program before. What do you recommend for a beginner. Thanks for sharing your expertise
I use an XR18 for our band for live performances, band practice and for recording in my home studio. I'm currently using Logic Pro for the daw and it interfaces nicely with the XR18, I used Reaper before with the same setup and it works well (I wanted other features that Logic has). I record all our band rehearsals and gigs to Logic on an Apple MacBook. I copy the Logic Pro sessions to a USB thumb drive or SDD drive and share them with the group members.
What about doing punch ins on a track? How do you monitor the track up until the punch in happens? This is always a problem for any setup I've tried to incorporate a mixer to a DAW.
I monitor from the XR18. So, every input I want can be monitored whenever I like. The Daw comes in on 17/18 over USB. I also hear it. So, there are no dropouts in monitoring, ever.
@@stevesrecordingtips7247 Thanks. But if mute is not used on the channel of the DAW you are trying to record punch ins on, you hear the direct monitoring from the XR18 and the sound from the source that you are trying to punch in after it has made the round trip through the computer and CPU as well. Usually flanging and latency occurs in this process. Buffer sizes below 128 are usually not an option in Pro Tools. You will run out of CPU power and freeze the system. There needs to be a way that the DAW channel automatically mutes precisely when the punch happens. That way you hear the recorded audio of the track you are punching to, then when the punch happens, you only hear the direct monitoring from the XR18. Know what I mean? My Pro Tools TDM system automatically did this, but newer versions don't have this option.
@@cornbobrimlove7892 Yeah, unfortunately that sounds like a Protools issue. I have Ableton and use the track lanes feature, so overdubbing is insanely easy and does not have any issues like what you're describing.
Bought the MR18 and I love it! Do you know how to hook up an anolog compressor to it? I just picked up an Art VLA Pro II and am confused how to get it going
How is your monitoring setup when mixing in your daw. Do you send it out through the XR18's left/right and aux output. I have three sets of monitors and headphone I use. Suggestion to send to all of them?
Hi, Thom. I send main out L/R to a Mackie Big Knob Passive, There, I can choose from my pairs of main monitors. Also, I run Auxes out to other room monitors like a PA and 2 keyboard amps. The headphones out goes to an ART 4-channel headphone amp. Hope this helps.
hi steve.if i counect with the internet port in my computer, is ther a problem using the internet with the computer conected to the xr18, what is your setup for this?
I’m curious about the Midas preamps, what is the topology of those preamps? What is the design? I’d like to KNOW I’m exploiting them to their fullest extent and that means I gotta know.
Hey Brian! To be clear, these are "Midas Design" preamps. The MR18 offers the highest end Midas preamps. That said, the XR18 preamps are really very good, as you've heard in this video. I can't answer specific tech questions very well. But, I can tell you this: I do this for a living, my product is good enough that people pay me, and my work stands up to scrutiny from some serious engineers. I look at it like this. I'm not trying to hit this thing hard to get coloration, Like I might do with an old SSL. I just need low S/N ratios, decent gain, and transparent sound. This does that. Hope this helps, and sorry I don't know the technical info you're asking about.
@@stevesrecordingtips7247 I might have to hit up beringer to find out, would be good to inow if you can hit hard for clor, but, they do sound pretty darn good. I use an X32 rack..
We made a video with our recommendations for computers. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MBPmNOVcgXY.html&ab_channel=Steve%27sRecordingTips
Really good question. I use it mainly as an 18 input USB A/D converter, then I mix in Ableton. But, there's nothing stopping it from being the track mixer as well. The Auxes can be assigned any way you like, as well. They're not needed for any of the interface duties nor the mixing duties, unless you want sub mixes. I'd probably be more inclined to use the Auxes as sends to outboard gear.
behringer x touch compact to control xr-18? how do I do it? the x touch compact has no ethernet port. midi connections are doing nothing. standard or mackie control mode, nothing works. x touch works with reaper daw just fine except for the encoder nobs 9-16 do nothing. would be very helpful if I could use the x touch to control the xr-18 and see the changes made on my ipad while at the same time being able to still control the daw. is this possible? thank you for your time and energy.
so you said, its conversion quality is almost as good as the audient ? which directly indicates that audient is too much over priced interface company, did i get it right sir ?
I'm not saying anything is overpriced. I'm just mentioning that the Audient (to my ears) represents a slight bump in audio quality. If your budget allows for that, great.
XR18 connected to my modem with an ethernet cable. Other devices on my house's Wifi. I find the onboard Wifi is functional, but a modem Really improves it.
@@michaelgiovanetti7454 It depends. If you know what a gain control does, it has a setting for gain. So, it will seem familiar to people who know mixing from the analog world. If you don't know what gain does, nor EQ, nor a gate, expect to have difficulty. For me, my Ableton detected it immediately and it just worked perfectly right out of the gate. I imagine it works with really any Daw. Btw, we're on FB at "Recording Tips." Come join us for discussions like this. facebook.com/groups/313091427289906
Undetectable to me. My Daw says it's 13ms round trip. Latency is more a measure of how your computer manages data, and has little to do with the interface. There are slight variations in some interfaces that have to do with the drivers, and whether the effects are managed by the interface or the Daw. This uses Asio drivers. Renowned for their speed and stability.
@@stevesrecordingtips7247 thanks a lot. In my studio I get 6ms with a small buffer size. My interface is. Presonus Studiolive 32. For playing VSTs some musians complain if the latency aprotches 30ms or so. My idea is to get the behringer as a portable mixer and interface for location work, like recording a drum kit in location or even a band... But I guess it will work fine. Thanks again
