Music Documentary Series / 13 x 30 min / 1996
The great tenors of the early to mid-twentieth century are introduced and analyzed in a 13-part television series. Each episode has both a biographical and a musical focus. Every tenor's particular art and style is demonstrated in remarkable archive footage which was digitally scanned and its speed and pitch corrected; much of this footage is from private collections or long-lost films and is shown here for the first time.

Gigli-A more than worthy successor to Caruso.

@martpast1 To sing is not to use only the throat, but all the body. Probably they use to lift the shoulders to relax the diaphragm/belly. It is very important that, after every phrase (at the time the singer goes to breath) to relax TOTALLY the diaphragm, only this way the singer can support more time, singing. Otherwise the belly goes getting tense, hard. But for Gigli, and the others, it is automatic. After years learning, they internalize the moviment, in an automatic way. I guess so.

Solo piagnucolava quando veniva giusto, e non era artificiale e non mancava di gusto. Era splendido e metteva tutto il sentimento nel canto.

I have to disagree with Mr.Celletti. Gigli's way of singing was not bad taste. We have to consider the "era" of 30's, 40's, everybody use to sing like that. But, if you analyse all the others singers of his time, he was much more pleasant to listen to, than the others. This means a good taste. Everybody imitate Caruso, that time. I disagree also that his feeling was artificial. That was so strong he used to loose the voice at an emotional aria.

@operataste why does he lift his shoulders when breathing? do u remember that teachers and books say to breath with the lower part of diaphragma and not upper lungs? same Pavarotti breaths

All great singers lifted their shoulders. Gigli, Del Monaco, Lauri-Volpi, etc...
@MyZakatak
@MyZakatak 3 года назад
@@abcdefgh-db1to no, the greats don’t lift the shoulders. Del Monaco is a bad example. The shoulders RISE but aren’t lifted. This is because correct breathing is costal-diaphragmatic. The expansion of the rib cage also causes it to elevate due to the external intercostals. What del Monaco often does wrong is he lifts the scapulae as we do when we shrug

@@MyZakatak Is Granforte a bad example too ? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WxFOQVsE2Oo.html

@@abcdefgh-db1to nope he breathes correctly. Just pay attention if the singer keeps the shoulders relaxed or if they shrug their shoulders. The shoulders will often visibly lift again because the expansion of the ribcage, but it should float up with visible ease and lack of rigidity
@MyZakatak
@MyZakatak 3 года назад
@@abcdefgh-db1to you do notice occasionally he lifts his shoulders a little, like at the end, to try and build up more pressure for the high notes. It’s not ideal, but few singers were absolutely perfect, but generally he breathes low

@paulostroff99 why he (and Pavarotti) lifts his shoulders when taking a breath ?

Beautiful sound. Amazing voice. But just to clarify, this sob that they are discussing, this is simply muscle. You are closing the sound with muscle, it is actually not good to do, but many singers get away with it.

Pavarotti is my choice, vocal perfection....but, how can you say anyone equalled Gigli let alone surpassed him

@martpast1 Also: both Gigli and Pavarotti became too much fat. This disrupts the perfect breath, the perfect moviment of the belly. If someone thinks that all singer is fat and it should be good for the singer, is completely wrong. To be fat is a problem in several aspects (health, muscle tone, etc.). Does the person gets diabetic, have gastric reflux (which is hugely damaging to the voice). Singers: maintain the correct weight!
@stone301
@stone301 2 года назад
Reflux actually doesn’t affect the voice much. Confirmed by laryngoscopes
