It’s not “bad luck” when you’re not even in the top-10 race after race after race. The real problem is at the top. When Patrick Lefevere decided to focus on stage racing rather than the classics, this was largely inevitable. You can win with only a super-star (see van der Poel, van Aert, Pogacar), but the last one racing for Quick-Step was Boonen. Or you can win the way Quick-Step normally does - have 5-6 really good guys in the mix, all with the right attitude, and a few of them will usually make the final selection. The problem now is, with the shift in focus to stage racing, they’re only sending 2-3 really good guys to a race, rather than 5-6, and that’s simply not good enough most of the time.
