The Via Rasella attack was an action taken by the Italian resistance movement against the Nazi German occupation forces in Rome, Italy on 23 March 1944. The attack was the largest Italian partisan attack against the German troops. The action began with the explosion of a bomb deposited by Rosario Bentivegna. Eleven other partisans participated. The attack saw the annihilation of the 11th company and caused the death of 32 men and about 110 wounded. In retaliation, the German troops killed 335 persons, prisoners and people rounded up, almost all of them civilians.

I have a world that a friend and I have been creating. More specifically, I have several worlds. One of these worlds is named Mountain in Italian. (I forget the exact translation.) As you might expect, it's a world full of mountains. Millions of them. Snowcapped peaks, valleys of water thanks to snowfall, and on the mountainsides, hardy life. Italy colonized this world. They built cities into the mountains, honeycombing the peaks with houses and factories and farms. One day, the Sol System United Government, of which Italy was a member state, was invaded by hostile aliens known as the Krux. This world was one of the first to be struck. Krux invasion forces took minor losses securing the world. They thought that garrison duties would be easy. How very wrong they were. From the top of every peak, to the bottom of every valley, resistance blossomed. Husbands, wives, sons, daughters, grandmothers, grandfathers- all were united in resistance. The very air seethed with fury that this invader would dare land on their planet, drink their water, eat their food. And so they fought. Every week, a Krux base would fall to sabotage. Every day, a patrol would die. Krux warriors were lured into alleyways and strangled; mountaineers had their climbing hooks shot out, making them plummet to their deaths. Commanders were subjected to their own personal hells as strike teams of resistance members, equipped with shiny new exosuits brought with the military garrison during the initial colonization, were stolen from defunct armories and repaired. The Krux grew paranoid, but they couldn't do anything. Nobody could've done anything. There was no way to quell a world where the very rocks wanted you gone. By the time liberation came, the Krux were all too happy to leave.

I might not know as much about the Italian campaign in WW2 compared to other theaters of operation, but I HAVE just seen the first two seasons of Money Heist, so this song hits perfectly. "Kaiser Wilhelm Siegesmarsch" but its Operation Michael and instead of marching all the way to victory you're looting all the way to surrender.

... When the echoes of shots and grenade explosions stopped in the mountains, armed men appeared from behind the rocks on both sides. - Who are you? Who is your commander? - And who are you? Wait, Bruno, is that you? "Who else?" Luigi… Two men with machine guns came out to meet each other. One in a military uniform and a black beret with a red star, the other in a cassock with a cross around his neck. - The commander of the fifth Garibaldi brigade, Captain Antonio. The second, throwing the machine gun behind his back, humbly spread his hands. "I'm just a priest. Father Leon. We are "Figli Del Signore" ("Children of the Lord" (Italian). - Turned around. - These are the same partisans as we are. And we know each other well. After all, many here are from the same villages. Does that surprise you? - We have heard that you are also called "Spiriti Di Montagna" ("Spirits of the Mountains" (Italian). But it's strange, you know, to see a priest with a gun. He smiled. - You're not a local, my son, that's why you don't understand. I was born and raised here, and I will tell you... Fascists have never been liked in these mountains. There was a time when they were afraid to come here. Now they are emboldened. Which means we have to take up arms. In The Name Of Our Lord. And then... they are enemies of the Faith. You know that. The captain nodded. - They burned monasteries in two villages, killed everyone... - Yes, it's unfortunate. Do you know what happened to those who committed such a thing? They disappeared, the mountains punished them. One of those standing next to the priest laughed. - They say they haven't even been found. Antonio scratched his forehead, shifting his beret. - Did you do it? - no. Mountains and... let's not talk about it. We are zealous Catholics and we should not talk about such... things. - OK. The captain sat down on a rock. - Father Leon, I would like to ask. He rolled up his sleeve. - Can you explain it? The tattoo appeared a few days ago… The priest came closer, shook his head, sighed. "You have grown wings, my son. Tell me, do you have any other Winged ones besides you? - yes. - Remember, this is a symbol of Faith, a sign that you are on the side of God. All of ours have the same. Antonio shrugged his shoulders in disbelief. - I understand with you. But we are communists, atheists… - Maybe. But, nevertheless, you are fighting for the Lord… - Of course, it's strange, ... but let's assume. And the tattoo on the shoulder, what does it mean? - I can't say that because I don't know. The inscription seems to be in Russian, but I don't know this language well. - Okay, let's leave it for later. The captain slapped his knees and stood up. - What are we going to do next? - Maybe we should unite? It will be easier for us to fight together. - I've already thought about it. And... I agree. Then we'll collect the trophies and leave. The priest looked around. - Remember, my children, there is no sin in taking weapons or ammunition from a dead fascist. The Lord approves of it. Leave the rest to the crows, they will be full today. ... Two detachments, united in one column, dissolved among the stone placers. « Una mattina mi son svegliato, o bella, ciao! bella, ciao! bella, ciao, ciao, ciao! Una mattina mi son svegliato ed ho trovato l’invasor. O partigiano, portami via, o bella, ciao! bella, ciao! bella, ciao, ciao, ciao! O partigiano, portami via, che mi sento di morir. E se io muoio da partigiano, o bella, ciao! bella, ciao! bella, ciao, ciao, ciao! E se io muoio da partigiano, tu mi devi seppellir.» ... - Do you also sing this song? - Why are you surprised? This song is being sung everywhere now, by all people, in all languages… «E seppellire lassu in montagna, o bella, ciao! bella, ciao! bella, ciao, ciao, ciao! ... Father Leon will be captured seriously wounded and after being tortured will be hanged in the village square. His last words will be "Long live communism!" After the war, he will be canonized as a martyr for his Faith. But it will happen later…
