"Bellamina" and "Variety Stomp" - Tuba Skinny

Tuba Skinny closes out their set at The French Quarter Festival 2017 with "Bellamina" and the crowd demands an encore, so they finish with "Variety Stomp". This year Tuba Skinny played on the Jackson Square Stage which features the more well known acts, rather than the Traditional Jazz Stage.

@@southernloff1494 The song is Bahamian, not Cajun. Written in the islands during Prohibition about the rum runner ships based in the Bahamas.

Isn't it astonishing how this band can work without sheet music, keeping all those complex arrangements in their heads? They have RU-vid videos for several hundred tunes. That's a lot to keep stored in the brain.

They are so damn good it's no wonder they are on the 'big stage' and an over flow crowd screams for an encore. And they knock that off with verve ... superb instrumentalists each, stunning ensemble work. They "lure" us to play pieces over and over .....

Damn listen to that crowd! when they play an outdoor crowd going crazy like this, they really need to step out front at the end and take a bow together rather than turn their backs and walk away. They deserve that moment of recognition , yet so modest.

When they first started playing the French Quarter Festival they appeared at the much smaller Traditional Jazz Stage. They have become so popular that they have moved to the Jackson Square Stage which allows for a much larger audience. I have never seen them take a bow and this is the only time I have heard them do an encore, probably because the announcer asked for it.

They did Ice Man at the Maison On their last night in NO before they took off for the 2018 Euro Tour. .Needless to say , it brought down the House ! TS rules !.

This video makes it clear that one of Greg Sherman's major contributions is swing. Even when the rumba tempo is fine for the horns but difficult for the singer, Greg makes it happen.

I find the band much better in this config, without E. Lewis, and with a drummer, (rather than washboard) .

You know that the drummer (Robin Rapuzzi) also the guy that play the washboard. Looks like he enjoy playing the washboard more, easier for him to improvise. Tuba skinny is a traveling band, so a washboard much more practical than a drum kit, and in his hand the washboard will bring more dinamic rhythm, he is an excellent percussionist.
