Here is the ruling of the play: You cannot give a player a homerun till they have crossed all 4 bags legally (rule 5.05(a)(5). By passing Turner it is deemed illegal so the homerun does not count (rule 5.09(b)(9). If Cody stayed on first the base would be his because he is entitled to it so Turner would only be out if they tagged him (if the ball is in live play) so if Cody would have just waited at first for the umpire to signal home run or out he would have had a two run homer.

@Mark-sj3xb
@Mark-sj3xb 3 года назад
Not exactly. You are watching the bases to make sure all runners touch all bases BECAUSE after the runners are off the field and in the dugout and the plate umpire says play ball, the pitcher can appeal and say “Second runner missed 3rd base” and be called out. In my umpiring life, I’ve seen several people miss a base on a home run but only once did someone appeal it, and he won the appeal. Of course, the player was the 1st baseman (who was also an umpire in my association) and the guy hitting the homer was stopped by his 1st base coach for a high five while rounding first and he missed the bag. The first baseman said “Hey blue, you saw that didnt you?” I’m not allowed to say or tip off that I saw anything. He has to go through the process of a legal appeal. But he did good to “work me” and I knew what he meant. I can’t say the hitter or the coach was happy with me when I rung him up. I got called every name in the book and had to eject them, and that prick first baseman did nothing to back me up to the other team confirming that he did miss it!

Cause it wasnt the same with no fans no pressure and bunch of teams felt like they couldnt play with their best cause of the virus. And some of the best players didnt even play. These are just facts unfortunately but whoever wins this season is the real champion! :D.

Never understood why when a homerun is hit, the play doesn't end and the runs are just counted and the bag running is just for appearance/flare. Seems so ass backwards the way they do it.
@philipwebb960
@philipwebb960 3 года назад
Nope. It isn't a home run if the batter doesn't touch each base in order, including home plate. By your way of thinking, if a batter hits the ball over the fence, he could just walk straight back to the dugout.
@brakthalas
@brakthalas 3 года назад
@@philipwebb960 My point is more that once the homerun is called it should be a dead ball and things that are supposed to happen, happen, instead of this convoluted "The play is over but not really." mentality.
@boosterh1113
@boosterh1113 3 года назад
I disagree. There is one way to score a point in baseball: touch all four bases, in order, without being called out. We don't need to create a new way of scoring because some players are so completely without situational awareness that they manage to screw up the play, even after the opposing team literally cannot stop them. It would be like hockey deciding to award an automatic point if a player ever got a breakaway on an empty net, because fans got disappointed seeing some players miss their shot.
@brakthalas
@brakthalas 3 года назад
@@boosterh1113 That is completely different, during a breakaway the puck is still in play, when a homerun is hit, the ball is not in play anymore, that is the difference and a major one at that. It isn't a new way of scoring, a home run is still a home run, oh, unless it is something like this where a home run isn't a home run, weird isn't it?
@boosterh1113
@boosterh1113 3 года назад
@@brakthalas I just don't feel the need to change the rules to insulate teams from their own incompetence. If you can't manage to successfully round the bases when the other team literally cannot get the ball, then that is 100% the fault of the scoring team, and they deserve to lose the point. If you don't like the hockey analogy, try basketball: In a free throw, the play is blown dead, and the defending team is forbidden from interfering with the shooter. But it still isn't an automatic point, the shooter still has to successfully put the ball through the basket, because putting the ball through the basket is how you score points in basketball. Same thing for baseball. In order to score, you need to round the bases. Hitting a home run means that the defending team can't stop you, but just like a basketball player can airball a free throw, a baseball team can screw up its own baserunning.

@boosterh1113
@boosterh1113 3 года назад
Why? A home run is just like any other play: you have to touch all four bases (following all the relevant rules) to score. MLB doesn't need to change the rules because some players don't have the minimal situational awareness and communication skills not to run past their teammates (and listen to the bloody base coach while running). Turner should have seen Bellinger running towards him on the basepath and known something was wrong, instead of just barrelling back without pause.

That’s crazy because the nonchalant fan actually affected the play because he made turner react and think the ball was caught. Most fans would make it known they have the ball and turner would have ran towards home and it’d be a routine two run shot. But because the fan threw off turner it’s an out. Another example of every baseball game will have something you’ve never seen before happen in it.

There are way too many homeruns being brought back because of missing the bag, or umps not calling the play fast enough. The second a homerun occurs, all other rules should be superceded and the homerun counts above the bags, crossing players and anything else.
