A solo hike up to Ben A'an in the heart of the Trossachs in Scotland. Ben A'an is located near the shores of Loch Achray and the summit has fabulous views over Loch Katrine along with the surrounding hills. It is also one of the most popular of the smaller peaks of Scotland.
This is an out and back hike of just under 3 miles which starts out from the Forestry and Land Scotland car park. There are charges for this car park and at the time it was £2 for 1 hour or £5 all day. A word of warning there are regular inspections that parking has been paid for. When I was returning to my car I noticed the inspectors were checking cars.
The hike starts out from directly opposite to the entrance of the car park on to well defined path. There is no need for a map and compass for this walk even in bad weather. It's fairly steep at first with some steps to negotiate before you reach a wooden footbridge. From there it bares left to flatten off a little when you cross over a stream via some easy stepping stones.
It then eventually drops down into a wooded area before climbing some more steps into a clearing. From here it's the main ascent to the summit via a section of rocky steps. There is a very short scramble section where you need to steady yourself with a hand to negotiate it.
Once past the short scramble section it's a short incline to the viewpoints over Loch Katrine. Once you've checked out the viewpoints it's onwards to the summit of Ben A'an. The summit has 2 outcroppings with the main summit at the front.
Once you have had your fill of the views at the summit it's a case of making your way back down the same way and back to the car park.
