Ben Affleck nearly quit 'Gone Girl' over a Yankees hat

Would you wear the garb of your favorite team's most hated rival? What if you got paid? What if you were getting paid millions of dollars, because you're a professional actor and it's literally your job to put on costumes and pretend to be someone else?
Well, Ben Affleck checks that last box, but when Gone Girl director David Fincher insisted Affleck's character wear a Yankees hat in one scene, Ben said no. He's too big of a Red Sox fan to do that, even in a movie.
This raises some questions: Does having a character wear a Yankees cap say something specific about that character? If so ... what? And if Affleck isn't okay with wearing the hat of his rival, then what is he okay with doing just for the sake of a movie?

@@jmbd07 lol he deleted his comment when he realized they moved back to the character's home town... In general, Cards fans don't tend to jump ship to other teams. And anyone who has spent any time in Southeast Missouri knows 99% of the folks love the Cardinals. That being said, he should have just put on the hat that the director wanted him to wear.

My only guess of why it wasn't that easy was because the Yankees probably paid to have their ballcap featured in the movie as product placement, so if Ben doesn't want to wear the hat, the director now has to reimburse the Yankees, seek out a new team and see if they will agree to the same product-placement deal. Just makes things much more of a pain in the ass over something trival. But in the end, the Mets agreed to have their cap featured in the film. That's my guess anyway.

I am a Mets fan. It happened because I was in NY about 20 years ago (I'm Australian) and I would always cheer for the local team. They were on a roll and I pledged to be a fan if they could get their winning streak to 10 games. They did, I became a fan and the Mets have been losing ever since! I'm now back in Australia and much happier without base ball

That's interesting cause Nicholson is an LA guy im pretty sure so I'd imagine that he's a Lakers- Kings- Dodgers and Raiders fan. I wouldn't think a Sox hat would be so bad for him but maybe that Celtics-Lakers rivalry poisons the whole Boston area by proxy

I spent more than 5 years homeless having to hold a sign in a wheelchair to get by day-to-day....... Aflac refusing to do his job in this instance is beyond infuriating, and kind of a slap in the face to anyone who's ever financially struggled. Well clearly that man never saw Batman v Superman because the fact of the matter is Ben Affleck as Batman was actually one of the things people liked about that movie despite the negative reception towards it. I actually thought the movie was pretty great and I also thought that the negative reception towards it was greatly exaggerated, but it's not a perfect movie by any means. Gone Girl, now that's an amazing film! But wow Ben Affleck delaying production because he refused to wear Yankees hat is just ridiculous.

As someone who considers these to be the two most toxic teams in MLB (and I say this having grown up a Yankee fan before both the Yankees and Red Sox fan bases made me decide I hated both teams and wanted nothing to do with the most overrated rivalry on the planet) this is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. It'd have to be one hell of paycheck for me to wear either a Packers, St. L Cardinals or Blues cap/jersey. Now understand, I'll proudly walk out in a latter era Atlanta Thrashers or Memphis Grizzlies shirt because I think they're good looks. However, I root for Illinois teams (I know most of them from the college to the pro teams are absolute garbage) but that's just the line I won't cross.

I wouldn't say that Fincher was petty. He's a detail oriented guy and he had an idea that fit. Affleck hat literally zero good reason to not do it, so why change the thing? Props tell an underlying story and you can't just change them. Additionally, if that diva comes to you and demands that their fandom would be hallowed, you can't just let that slip.

As a Yankee fan, l actually greatly respect this. Its is the most hateful rivalry in baseball. l don't want a Boston actor to shrug off allegiances and put on the Yankee hat like it's nothing. Despite how asinine this will seem to anyone else, and it is, l want him to hate us, l want to hate the Red Sox. This isn't a rivalry you can just casually sit down.

I can understand why he would do this. He was doing it to maintain his brand persona as Hollywood's resident "BOWSTON ACTAH," and he knew that wearing a Yankees hat would completely destroy that reputation.
