The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts announced the selection of five Honorees who will receive the 44th Kennedy Center Honors for lifetime artistic achievements. Recipients to be honored at the annual national celebration of the arts in Washington, D.C. are: operatic bass-baritone Justino Díaz, Motown founder, songwriter, producer, and director Berry Gordy, Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels, legendary stage and screen icon Bette Midler, and singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell.
The Kennedy Center Honors celebrates luminaries whose art and creativity have enriched us beyond measure,” stated Kennedy Center Chairman David M. Rubenstein. "An artistic tour de force and America’s Divine Miss M, Bette Midler has enjoyed an unrivaled and prolific career, entertaining millions with her wondrous voice and trademark comedic wit.”
“This year’s Honorees represent the unifying power of the Arts and surely remind us of that which binds us together as human beings. These artists are equal parts genius, inspiration, and entertainment,” said Kennedy Center President Deborah F. Rutter. “After the challenges and heartbreak of the last many months, and as we celebrate 50 years of the Kennedy Center, I dare add that we are prepared to throw ‘the party to end all parties’ in D.C. on December 5th, feting these extraordinary people and welcoming audiences back to our campus. We look forward to shaping an even more exciting Honors program and broadcast with CBS and the producers based on the success and newfound innovations of our 43rd Honors earlier this year."

The fact that Ben wrote this masterpiece when he was a TEENAGER just blows my mind. One of the greatest of all time!

I grew up around Ben and while we were writing Happy Birthday he was composing Somewhere Over The Rainbow- always a step ahead and a truly great songwriter who made everyone in his orbit a little better.

Impressed that Bette covered this one, and not the 50 other options I would have guessed first.

I've loved this song ever since first hearing it, even though I've never heard Mr. Folds (I'm a giant fan) sing it in concert.

I had no idea that Ben Folds wrote this song....I'm surprised that he wrote it when he was so young. I also never really knew what the song was about. Wow. 58 year old mind....blown!

I was fortunate enough to see Ben Folds Five on the debut album tour in 95 or 96, in a tiny club in Cincinnati where you were practically on top of the band. They basically played the eponymous album and a couple of the tunes that would be on Whatever And Ever Amen. I am so glad I got that chance.

How happy am I to see this! Just to realise it existed made immediate sense! And I only realised it because of a random CD purchase from Discogs...wow! Low key Bette fan...70s albums foisted on me by my sister which built the respect. Much bigger Ben Folds fan, once I found him, everything he did was good for me. And now this. Boxing cover! by Bette Midler, and then performed for her? Wow.

@@liljakarennorquistjonsdott1157 Ooh I thought this video was implying that she was dead. I guess it was just the sadness of the song. Whoops lol. Still a good choice by her. I'm a big Ben Folds fan.

Just the concept of a waltz written about Mohammed Ali and Howard Cossel is wonderful. But, the song is a gem--beautiful, melancholy and a touch funny.

I like the song, I have Bette's version on the Bathhouse Betty cd. But the rocking of the camera is annoying. I feel like I'm on a damn boat going over rough waters. What a distraction. 🤢😡🤢
@eramosat
@eramosat Год назад
Well...all I can say is the Ben Folds original version is worth looking into, as opposed to the tribute he made just for her that you're annoyed by. As for boomer-phobic comments that follow...Bette is thanking boomers for their contribution to her expanding repertoire with this cover.
