Ben Hogans grip and how it influences his swing are on show in this video. Ben Hogan's grip and what it can do for you are amazing findings in this video where I try to put Ben Hogans book into life. The Hogan full swing is discussed in full in my previous videos so don't miss them

Yes sir! Subscribed! As a former high handicapper who practically instantly became a scratch golfer after reading Hogan's Five Lessons i vehemently believe they are the only instruction any amateur should ever focus on! I've read and watched so much other instruction over the years and nothing cuts to the chase better than he did way back in 1957! It's perfection. And as he said it ALL starts with this grip. That is the whole key to sending the club into motion on its natural orbit while really feeling the clubhead throughout its entire journey. The drill to practice without trail hand index and thumb is brilliant. This light light grip pressure sets the entire motion on its proper course. It naturally produces the smoothest, silkiest motion as the club literally whips through impact. This way the all-important lead hand dominates, supinates, pounds, and freely releases all the energy into the ball. I can practicaly flush the ball all day long with my eyes closed thanks to Hogan's grip and his five lessons.

I have watched so many other people “analyze” this grip and it NEVER made sense. Finally!!!! Somebody who took the time and delve into the minutia, even hitting some kinesiology points. I took some time off and played 2x in the last 2 weeks. Once was with a former colleague who I haven’t seen in ages. I played disastrously both times.and I have been beating myself up over not putting in the practice. Today I watched this video multiple times and my swing felt like it used to when I would crush the ball. Only this time I didn’t beat the ball like it owed me $$$$$$. Thank you!

I am a fader who has leaned into it rather than trying to recreate the "perfect" PGA tour flight...aka draw. I play with a neutral grip as the "strong" grip left me feeling out of sync. At times this even causes me to pull my shots left as I have a fast lower body to compensate for less agility in shoulder turn due to a large chest and not being able to get left shoulder under chin. Thanks Steve! You validate my unconventional swing....and with Ramm winning, and Spieth's "chicken wing" I am finally learning to make my own swing that works for me!

This was so helpful, thanks for posting this. I´ve been fascinated with Hogans swing for a while, he himself said he starts the swing with the lower body, shifting the weight to the lead leg and firing the hips, letting the club follow like a whip... i´ve noticed other pros on YT starting to talk about this recently and thought, hang on, I´m sure Ben Hogan did this so came back to studies of his swing and sure enough, there it is. Then I noticed that Hogans grip looked odd, compared to the stronger grip I´ve learned (I tend to draw or hook the ball, but it can turn into a slice if I get too quick with the hips, even with a strong grip, but hit it cleaner with what feels like a weaker grip) I guess it´s time to unlearn what I´ve been doing wrong and go buy hogans book, then I might finally break 80!

My grip was learnt from Hogans book But remember hogan was left handed playing right so you will have to do a lot of left side strengthening and coordination. I ve had to become almost ambidextrous! to get the most out of this weak left hand grip tho i have managed to get my left thumb to the right of the shaft and almost matching it with the my heel pad. Hogan bangs on about pressure in his right index knuckle and this is the key to using your right side in the golf swing, sustaining pressure on the grip, which is what the drill of swinging with right thumb off grip teaches you.

I developed a different version of the overlap... I think it may be used by some people when putting but I did it because at the time I had a blister and it stopped the rubbing. So what I do is the index finger of the top hand, overlaps the bottom finger of the bottom hand. It's quite comfortable. Your thoughts?

That is so interesting as you have lots of views having the pressure in the index of the right. I think Ben was right as it will help keep the right hand from rolling the face. His wrist was so very bent back that the index finger would be a death move for him.

When you pivot fast anti-clockwise, and the left arm rotates and reconnects to the left pec, if you have a strong grip you will hook it low left. Most people don’t pivot on and on and on to the finish, the club never unloads, the toe never goes ‘out’ to the ball, the face is open, they slice it right and then to avoid that, they throw the hands at it or go back to a strong grip. When the solution is to pivot even more and even more ‘left’, not to strengthen the grip or stall flip.

Once you interlock, aren’t you lifting and moving/the first finger/main grip from the left hand on the golf club? I definitely want to be able to interlock (not overlap), but figured I would be compromising the grip since we seem to lock that finger tight at the beginning. Great tutorial thanks a lot.

Steve, I've been overhauling my 40 years old crap rubbish casting swing into the best I can do hogan style. As you have, Ted Hunt did a brilliant job decoding Hogan's intents in two books, "The Magical Devise" and "Short Game Simplified". There is a drawing on the top right of page 5 in "Five Lessons" that looks like the thumb is square on top of the shaft/grip versus slightly to the right. My only question, I deciphered that the right thumb is actually on top of the club vs slightly on the right side of the grip, pointed at the ball based on Hogan's drawings and Hunt's description, as Hogan doesn't really cover the thumb in enough detail. Also, apparently, Hogan initially placed the left thumb "long" or relaxed on the shaft and evolved to the left thumb being drawn up "short" against the right palm vs under the right palm, UNLESS he wanted to hit a cut. What are your thoughts?
