CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston) goes to the Valley of Lepers to find his mother and sister, but he's not allowed to see them.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
This 1959 version of Lew Wallace's best-selling novel, which had already seen screen versions in 1907 and 1926, went on to win 11 Academy Awards. Adapted by Karl Tunberg and a raft of uncredited writers including Gore Vidal and Maxwell Anderson, the film once more recounts the tale of Jewish prince Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston), who lives in Judea with his family during the time that Jesus Christ was becoming known for his "radical" teachings. Ben-Hur's childhood friend Messala (Stephen Boyd) is now an ambitious Roman tribune; when Ben-Hur refuses to help Messala round up local dissidents on behalf of the emperor, Messala pounces on the first opportunity to exact revenge on his onetime friend. Tried on a trumped-up charge of attempting to kill the provincial governor (whose head was accidentally hit by a falling tile), Ben-Hur is condemned to the Roman galleys, while his mother (Martha Scott) and sister (Cathy O'Donnell) are imprisoned. But during a sea battle, Ben-Hur saves the life of commander Quintus Arrius (Jack Hawkins), who, in gratitude, adopts Ben-Hur as his son and gives him full control over his stable of racing horses. Ben-Hur never gives up trying to find his family or exact revenge on Messala. At crucial junctures in his life, he also crosses the path of Jesus, and each time he benefits from it. The highlight of the film's 212 minutes is its now-legendary chariot race, staged largely by stunt expert Yakima Canutt. Ben-Hur's Oscar haul included Best Picture, Best Director for the legendary William Wyler, Best Actor for Heston, and Best Supporting Actor for Welsh actor Hugh Griffith as an Arab sheik.

It *is* more than a movie. It is an *icon*. Remember, this movie is not just "Ben Hur", it is "Ben Hur: A Tale of the Christ". Judah descended into the valley, risking death, because those he loved were dying of leprosy; God the Son descended into history, accepting death, because those He loved were dying of sin. Judah's loved ones being miraculously healed at the precise instant Christ died on the Cross is not just to provide a happy ending; it is a large part of the point of the film.

You and your family have been wrongly imprisoned, and the first time that you hear your mother’s voice in 5 years.....is.......to hear her ask how you’re doing. If that doesn’t tug at your heartstrings what will? Ben-Hur is my favorite movie. This scene, the scene where Messala dies, the chariot race, the scene where Messala condemns Judah, the scene at the foot of Jesus’s cross....some of the finest acting I’ve ever seen.

even stronger than the romantic scenes, this two roles they delivered interacted at high voltage in every scene between them beyond all the things the both were going through life after they got separated. The scene of their reencounter was played without any typical or convoluted high volume sentimentality but so subtly restraint, you could almost hear the explosive decibels and feel the voltage going in, like standing at the fence of a Power station you dont have to trespass or see fireworks sparkling, cracking live cables touching each other to know. It wasn't needed even kisses of 30 minutes or 3 seconds to topple And she was less veteran than Heston at the Time

As you likely know, it was the best film of 1959. Yet in the late '70s, a then 33 year old film Critic wrote a hardcover book "The Great Movies". However he omitted "Ben Hur" in his list of great films, claiming he chose not to include religious oriented films as he felt they didn't encourage people to look for objective, non- biased messages but instead offered rigid messages, not allowing for independent thought. But then, he did include a film by Spanish filmmaker, Luis Bunuel, which very obviously mocked Christianity, in his book about great films. Perhaps very telling, he also included the Marx Brothers' film, "Duck Soup" in his list.

During the making of this film William Wyler told Charlton Heston that he needed him "to be better." Heston asked the director to be specific. Wyler said that he didn't know exactly, and that if he did, he could tell Heston what to do and he would do it. Wyler wouldn't elaborate; he just needed the actor to be better. I think what he actually wanted was for him to take less for granted and to pay attention to all the nuances. That advice clearly paid off.

I feel so sorry for Judah Ben-Hur. He had everything a man could've wanted; love, respect, a wonderful home, a great family and enough money to provide for those he loved. Messala knew that the 'attack' on Valerius Gratus was an accident, yet he sent Judah to the galleys and had his family imprisoned all so he could make an example of them and become feared. All because of Messala's selfishness, Judah lost everything; his home, his family, even his freedom. Now when he's finally found his mother and sister, he can't even look or talk to them because under Mosaic law, he would have to reject them. He's gone through so much pain and suffering, hoping to see his mother and sister again; now all he could do was watch them slowly die. I honestly don't know what I'd do if I was in Judah's position.

He never lost, because Jesus would not allow it. All the things were made his and held Judah's and his mother and sister lives in his hands and evil or even Death would not prevail, never had a chance. Boyd acting was superb role too, as those kind of friends who once loved as children can but become calculating cold blooded haters that treason anyone like Judas or the fallen Angel did once. Everyone must to keep in mind that the role of Judah is almost an alter-ego of the other Prince of Judah, because the author could not write directly in that Age a credible, or acceptable tale of Jesus as he tinkered, but only through a character suffering losing all in parallel crossings. Even if Jesus held Victory in the hand always, and he knew it (as Judah never lost his sense to prevail regardless impossible odds after the Water scene encounter) Jesus still had to pass like Judah through the heartwrenching pains of betray and losses, almost absolute ruin including Health loss that often are harder than even an immediate loss of Life surrendering to Death. Judah was close to surrender once too, like Jesus begging to pass the bitter cup ahead of him knowing it too well. Even betray and rejection he would forgive, like Peter did repenting heavy in heart for it because his heart was still Christ's regardless human failings. Even Judas would have been forgiven, like Messala but hatred consumed them before a return to friendship and the true Love that lays in it. The real Tragedy

So many things I love about this scene: The incredible shot of Judah hiding behind the rock in the foreground, and the women emerging from the cave in the distance. Miriam proves herself as a true mother in every sense of the word. She doesn’t care for her own suffering. She just wants to know if her son is okay. Esther never lies to Miriam. She is asked two things “Is he well? Is he happy?” but only answers one, the one that has an answer which will soothe this sick woman. Esther truthfully says that Judah is well (in terms of health), but does not falsely claim that he’s happy because he’s not. Charlton Heston’s phenomenal acting as he breaks down hearing his mother ask about him. Even when Judah is (rightfully) furious with Esther, he does not hit her. So many old films from this era feature men slapping women, but here, Judah proves his chivalry by actually listening to her explanation of why she lied, instead of resorting to violence toward her. (Men everywhere, take note.) What a scene, indeed.

Leprosy is completely curable through a course of multi-drug therapy (MDT) for six months or a year. But love and hate in humankind hasn't changed, one can't exist without the other.

You know, people's reaction wasn't any better when princess Diana visited lepers. I was like 9 at the time and I still remember the shock and horror in the media that the duchess would do such a thing.

Saw this as a child when it first released, then re-released on 60 yr anniversary. Has never lost its beauty, power,or emotional impact. I know so many scenes by heart & still always wait for the one where Judah is told his family is still alive. Incomparable movie.
