This music helps me to better understand Quantum Physics; whereas the "event horizon" is where ever the listener is in space and time; and each musician masterfully applies all attributes of the particular force of nature they represent; Jack is time (continuum), Holland is the "gravitational force" , Pat is a cosmic event , a star (literally & figureably) and Herbie represents the "singularity", the black hole that absorbs even light particles (ideas) into the unknown....
@Shrimping Business Speaking seriously, this group WAS overwhelmingly powerful, as are the 2 distinct branches of post-Newtonian physics: general and special relativity on the one hand, and the interpretational confusion and conflict engendered by quantum mechanics of n the other. Shadow Dance FLOWS, in it's magnificently stark, brilliant and hugely impersonal way, as do these 2 huge pillars of our contemporary understanding of physical reality. The WHOLE OF reality? Fascinating philosophical question.. ) .. And exactly LIKE these theories there is a beautiful yet strictly disciplined FLOW of technique and ideas whose a solute MASTERY had taken its practitioners a considerable portion of their LIFETIMES to attain. In the cases both of superb modern jazz such as Shadow Dance and GR and QM within physics, similarly the theorist/ listener simply DOESN'T KNOW IN ADVANCE where these forms of state-of-the-art thinking and interlocking musical expression are TAKING us. Incidentally, Shrimping Business, what's YOUR take on the vexed question of the interpretation of quantum mechanics?
yeah right, dumn ass... this music helps me to understand music, art, and it connects with my feelings....it doesn't help me to understand stephen hawkings, or the universe...but off course you understand pluto and mars better as well as black holes...always these misguided fuckers on this planet who think they are connected to some-thing....jesus...
I can't get enough of this song. The way Herbie comes in on the off beat then Pat tearing it up on Guitar. Holland and DeJohnett carrying the tune. Should be a Jazz standard for the next 100 years. I love that they look like they real enjoy playing with each other.
When I think of the greatest improvisational musicians, these four are always on that list. And there are so many others, for example ,you have to mention Corea and Cobham, just out of respect. But, then there’s Pat Metheny. He just operates on another level. Not to say he’s better, or more talented, than these other aforementioned greats. But he just goes to places, that most musicians cant even contemplate. When he goes off on one of his playing tangents, the others in the group must be thinking “ I sure hope he comes back to us at some point !” . Kudos to Jack and Dave for keeping the rhythm section perfectly timed around Pat and Herbie’s improvisational swinging. This is just a fantastic version of Shadow Dance. Wow!
fretbuzz59 I once read that he made a decision way back that he would only play one sound on the synth guitar, lest the anticipation of the sound coming out of the guitar would draw attention away from the tune. Pat is probably the greatest jazz musician, composer, improviser, you name it. He defines the term serious musician. Check the Seminario clip on RU-vid. Incredible. 9 over Reggae or whatever it’s name (the first song) was composed by Pat and Jack.
@@eleetse6701 Interesting and logical decision about the guitar synth. Always found it amusing that he made that sound-- which is really pretty cheesy --*his* sound. For decades, Pat has been my favorite musician, for the reasons you cite. Been listening to him for 36+ years.
Herbie takes place and it becomes another story with my outmost respect to all of the rest who happen to me in my pantheon of musical gods. But, Herbie creates drama. It just becomes something else . Monster performance by all. Blessings.
Parallel Realities is still one of my fave jazz albums of all time...a "supergroup" in every sense of the term...all of them with limitless improvisational skills. Nothing better than the sound of PM's Roland synth guitar. Definitely worth checking out!
This is impossibly perfect, in so many ways. Herbie is absolutely SMOKIN’. Thank you all for such a dynamic performance. And thank you Dave Holland for writing it!
ohhh, i remember this time, Metheney and Hancock, so different so freaky so special and then this Switzerland Clockwerk called DeJohnette and Mister Perfect Dave Holland---- it can´t get better and more creative...
I saw this quartet in Philadelpha - at the Academy of Music in Center City, aay 1990ish. Damn Good Show! I remember that Mr. Hancock seemed to be trying to make his synthesizer sound like a guitar by adding bends to his notes and Mr. Metheny was trying to make his guitar sound like a keyboard with his delay effects and amplifier settings.
impressive, really, line up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! we are lucky generation to listen to so incredible musicians!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! to all young musicians: please, listen to these Masters-Monsters!!!!! you, we all, have to learn a lot from these fantastic persons-musicians!
I've been lucky enough to see Dave Holland live a number of times (in a number of different groups as well as his own ensembles) and I own dozens of albums on which he's featured and the guy is NEVER not killing it. Even when he's just comping or walking. An amazing musician!
13 minutes in. Holy Shit! Totally delightful musical insanity. Incredible chemistry and groove maintained at stellar intensity. Jack is the master glue.
4 mostri sacri,un sound pieno di energia, che mi accompagna in un viaggio sublime, ormai da anni.E poi nel 1992 gli ho visti dal vivo a Viareggio.Uno spettacolo meraviglioso
This record is unbelieving...how say!? Mr Pat Metheny and his first solo is just an simple form of language as a solo must be. Second time piano is magic as a lyric fly. Music could forever have a response when they play together with the public. I love the complex harmonies and this form of liberty. It s my opinion, for me to us and them. It s sound jazz.
